Souls #2

Fragile Spirits

Rate this book
Paul has always known he was a Protector, fated to serve a Speaker who could hear the voices of spirits lingering after death and help those souls find peace.

Vivienne ignores the voices of the dead.

Paul has always followed the Protector’s rule book, preparing diligently for the day when he’d be matched with his Speaker and fulfill his destiny.

Vivienne never does what she’s told.

So when Paul is matched with Vivienne, they both find the pairing less than satisfactory. But a kidnapping, a malevolent spirit and power stronger than both of them may just prove that they are two halves of the same whole.

In a stunning story about the beauty of fate and the power of secrets, Mary Lindsey returns to the world of Shattered Souls with a breathtaking thrill-ride of a novel.

**Note from author: This book begins one month after Shattered Souls leaves off. Lenzi and Alden are featured in this book, but reading Shattered Souls is not a prerequisite.

Writing this book was a blast! I am so grateful to Penguin Publishing for allowing me to visit the world of the Intercessor Council again. Thank you to my readers whose enthusiasm and support made it possible.

I've had a lot of emails about Alden and Lenzi. YES, they are in this book and are featured all the way through the story, but this book stands on its own and it is not necessary to read the books in order. I love all the readers who have shown such interest in the series. Thank you again.

Thank you Penguins-Philomel for providing me with a physical ARC in exchange of an honest review.

First I wanted to say that I absolutely love the cover of this book, it is simply gorgeous. Second, I dove into this book not realizing at first that it was part of a series. Luckily for me and my mistake, thought the first two characters are featured in this book you do not need to read book 1 in order to realize what is going on.

Paul is a protector, he has always known he is a protector who is fated to serve another person called a Speaker. Speakers can hear the spirits that are unable or have not moved on from their death and their own faith is to help them resolve what's anchoring them to earth and help them move on.

It took a while longer but Paul finally get's his speaker Vivienne who at first wants nothing to do with him. Vivienne comes with a lot of baggage, and the girl is nothing he had seen before. Hot pink hair and black clothes put up a tougher front, but underneath is a scarred girl who simply wants revenge for her mother and aunts deaths.

With a malevolent spirit out there powerful enough to wreak havoc, it's going to take the two of them working together in order to defeat the man and put him to rest once and for all.

Loved this story, so much fun, entertaining and totally engrossing. I had a hard time putting Fragile Spirits down. I have been in the mood for ghosts stories lately and this had me attention from the start. I love the idea behind Fragile Spirits, and the world that Mary Lindsey has created. Original, fast paced that leaves you wanting even more.

I was so sad when I hit the end of the book, but I was happily surprised that unlike other young-adult books out there it did not end in a cliffhanger!

Lindsey does a wonderful job with characters, especially Paul and Vivienne, I loved how realistic the characters sounded and they weren't perfect. Not even Paul. The relationship starts of shaky, and the bickering between them pulled a smile more then once. The build up to trust was slow and emotional for, but well worth it in the end. I had to remember several times that they are teenagers when Vivienne acted irrational, but it was fun to see her change through the book.

The budding romance between Paul and Vivienne was sweet but I am glad that it didn't cloud and take away from the story as I was more engrossed about the resolutions of their Speaker/Protector relationship and ghosts.

That being said, I also absolutely loved Race. I hope he get's his own book soon as well, I cannot wait to see what he has in store for us especially with Maddie. I couldn't stand Cinda, I thought she was the worse. I know she was just trying to help but she didn't listen and completely endangered the entire crew at the end of the book after they told her to stay behind when they went to take on the powerful spirit. Plus, I guess part of the animosity towards her comes from the fact that I really liked Maddie and Race.

Overall, I absolutely enjoyed this beautiful story. It had everything I could ask for. Great storyline, wonderful characters, and quiet an emotional ride in between. It held my attention until the very end and didn't let go until it was sadly, over.

2014? Is this a joke?

Ok yeah the first could have been left as a single novel, a series is great though!
But 2014? I'm not going to remember this series in 2 years!
Haha it was good, but not that good!

It felt so good to be back in Mary Lindsey's world of ghosts, Speaker's, and Protector's!

Such a unique little world that I, as well as other readers, got to be a part of. I admit that I longed to see more of the council but alas.

This was a really great companion, and it doesn't take long for things to get started. We begin in the book meeting Paul, a Protector. Fans of Alden and Lenzi from the previous book, will be pleased to hear that we get to see them quite frequently since Paul has been acting as their back up.

It isn't too far into the book that we find out Smith is still at large, and that Paul will be finally be pairing up with a Speaker. To his shock he gets a rather prickly Vivienne.

She is completely goth, from her black nails, bright pink hair, and torn stockings and yet everyone just cannot help but love her. I especially loved her simply for being goth! It was a lovely twist and made Vivienne appealing since she sounded dangerous and exotic. I also began to appreciate her Speaker method which was a mix between playing it cool, even though she was scared at times, and taking no shit even from Malevolent spirits.

Here is where I felt a little like the book fell into the insta-romance department. Their relationship as Protector and Speaker is rocky since Paul tends to follow the rule book and Vivienne breaks said rules. But after one day of working together to take care of a border-line Malevolent, there's suddenly this connection they didn't have before. Trust I could understand, but it wasn't just that but this instant attraction and strong emotions for both of them towards each other.

MORE development! MORE character building!

I need more than one day on the job and Paul covering her ass when shit goes down! In defense, I did find they meshed well together and the action scenes of the book were really good.
The final showdown involving Smith was climatic, but it felt a bit too easy at the same time.

There were some serious topics at play in the book, like abuse and poverty. Learning to let go and open your heart to others despite your fears, and also that revenge isn't always as sweet as it seems.

All this combined really made for a great book, and I cannot wait for more from Mary Lindsey!

I was pretty bummed when I saw that FRAGILE SPIRITS was not going to continue to follow Lenzi and Alden but from pretty early on you see that they are still a big part of the book and that the new main characters are pretty interesting all on their own.

Only a month has passed since the ending of SHATTERED SOULS. FRAGILE SPIRITS follows the story of rule follower Protector Paul and fly by the seat of her pants, no one tells her what to do Speaker Vivianne. One of my favorite parts of getting to know Vivienne was her attitude and how different yet similar she is to the other characters. Both her and Paul have a hidden past and are so much more than they appear on the surface. Getting to know them was not hard to endure. I enjoyed their interaction, connection and the development of their relationship.

This series has some great secondary characters. We of course get a nice dose of Lenzi and Alden but we also see a lot of Race. Race is such a hoot. I think he needs his own book next *cough, cough*. FRAGILE SPIRITS was very much character driven. The storyline was of course interesting but the characters were its driving force.

I thought book 1 was a standalone so getting a book 2 was a great surprise. The author did end the story arc but also started some things I feel need to be in a new book so I will sit and wait patiently to see if we will get a book 3. If you enjoyed SHATTERED SOULS you will not want to miss FRAGILE SPIRITS.

I remember thinking at the end of SHATTERED SOULS that the traditional end of a first-in-a-series book only really left one outstanding element – the bad guy – and hoping desperately that I wouldn’t be headed into a manufactured hostile environment for the established couple to drag the series on. I’m very pleased that this didn’t happen. FRAGILE SPIRITS is a part of the Souls universe, but stands as its own story, too.

It was hard to connect to Vivienne at first and while I originally thought of that as a down point for the book, as the story progressed, I saw it differently. Just as Paul did, we were supposed to have trouble connecting with her. It made it so much more satisfying when that shell started cracking. It was the same with Paul and his rigid sense of rules and procedure. Not until Vivienne started to get under that rigidity, and we started to see the real person under the rules, did I truly connect with him. That’s about the time I realized that the story title wasn’t so much about the ghosts they were meant to resolve, but about the main characters themselves, too.

The story itself is strong, though I still have a little trouble reconciling myself to the Protectors’ souls jumping bodies all the time. It gets to be like a shell game I had trouble following at times. FRAGILE SPIRITS unfolds with good pace, and a few very action packed moments in there to keep your heart racing. (And one moment that made me almost throw the book out the window.) Without spoiling anything, I can say that I truly loved the way it wrapped up. It wasn’t anything I was expecting even thought I’d spent a lot of time while reading trying to second-guess where the author was headed.

I do wish there had been a little more of Race and Maddi, most especially figuring them out, and I still think Race’s Speaker needs to seriously lighten up already.
Since FRAGILE SPIRITS seems to have wrapped the main story arc, I’m not sure if another is forthcoming, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more from this author.

Paul has known he was destined to be a Protector for as long as he can remember, fated to serve a Speaker who could hear the voices of spirits lingering after death. Partnerships between the two are extremely important because these lingering spirits, while annoying in the beginning, can turn into Malevolents. When they do, their ability to reason is severely impaired while their power to wreak havoc is truly frightening. Left unchecked, they could eventually destroy humanity.
Paul is waiting to be paired, but when Charles, his trainer and the man who has been like a foster dad to him since he was wandering alone on the streets as a child, introduces him to Vivienne, he knows he's in for a real challenge. She's scary and so full of fear and anger he's not sure how to respond. She wants nothing to do with him, but her reasons aren't something he's able to figure out quickly or easily. Charles, however, refuses to let her blow Paul off, so grudgingly, reluctantly, they start learning how to work together.
As Paul starts putting some of the pieces together, He discovers why Vivienne is so angry and mistrustful. These make him all the more determined to hang in there until she begins to open up and share parts of her past with him. When what might be the worst Malevolent on the planet, Smith, kidnaps Vivienne's aunt, things go into overdrive. Fortunately, Paul and Vivienne have developed the connection so important between Protector and Speaker, one that allows them to share thoughts and emotions without speaking. There's one heck of a final confrontation that will have teens reading with a frenzy.
This is the second book in the series, but can be read as a stand-alone quite nicely. I like how the author has taken different characters (in the same manner as Katie McGarry has done) who were peripheral or nonexistent in the first book and given them the stage to strut their stuff. Teens who like paranormal or urban fantasy with a nice dash of romance will love this book.

This is the second book in the Souls series, but definitely can be read as a stand-alone since it features a different couple, Vivienne and Paul. I love these two. Vivienne ignores all things involving the dead. Even though she's a Speaker, she wants nothing to do with it, and never does what she's told. Paul is a Protector. He wants to serve a Speaker and help souls find peace. He always does what he's told (goody two shoes) and longs for the day he gets paired with a Speaker … until he's paired with Vivienne. Watching the two warily circle around each other and their issues was intense. They are perfect for one another and only have to let go of their baggage to see that. For fans of Shattered Souls, Lenzi and Alden are in the book, just not front and center. This ghost story is the perfect read for those looking for a haunting yet lovely read, and guess what? The ending is great!

Lindsey does it again with a powerful, riveting, amazing sequel to Shattered Souls. I have been mesmerized reading these books and pray that she continues on with this writing.

After learning about Lenzi and Alden we are taken on another amazing ride with Vivienne and Paul. This is a story that is often told about unlikely people being from different sides of the tracks. Paul has grown up under Charles' tutelage and lives in a mansion and drives a mercedes. Vivienne has lived with her single mother and after her mothers demise she lived with her grandmother. She sports pink hair and black finger nails, so she is actually quite the opposite from Paul in his fancy suits and Rolex watch.

I don't really care to give a book report on this book because to point out the "best parts" would be to totally write the book over here. This is an easy to read and hard to put down novel and I would highly recommend it to anyone that likes to read. Sit back and enjoy and allow Lindsey to become your next favorite author.

I highly recommend this book to fans of the previous in the series, Shattered Souls, which, of course, should be all you, because it was awesome. Lenzi and Alden have an amazing story in this book, and the new protagonists, Paul and Vivienne, really grew on me. (Seriously, I am the quickest and harshest judge EVER, and, somehow, Mary Lindsey made me change my mind and like Vivienne in the end.) Smith is back, and Race and Maddi, and everyone is just so on point...and this book really does justice to the previous book in the Souls series (I guess that's what it's called)

I found this so engaging, I read it in honestly four or five hours, Mary Lindsey's writing style is just so wonderful, if you haven't read anything of hers, I highly, highly recommend you do...I think she should be a household name in the YA Lit community, honestly, I do...I just love her books, and I really recommend that you at least try them.

I liked this book a lot. I thought it was going to be hard to get into because I haven't read the first book and I thought I was going to be lost and I wasn't going to know the things it would reference from the first one but I found that it wasn't the case, it might even stand as a stand alone novel if you want.

I liked the elements in the story and how it had a little bit of everything: action, paranormal aspects, comedy, and romance. Without trying to ruin anything to those who haven't read it yet, let me just say that you're in for a surprise with Vivienne and Paul and that I would love to read another book with them in it. Preferably one in Vivienne's POV.

It's a good story, with well-rounded and like-able characters. I enjoyed reading it, but it was uneventful.

I didn't feel it deserves 4 stars but at the same time I feel like I am selling it short with 3 stars, damn you Goodreads! I need the half stars!

This book was a fast paced novel. Although I did enjoy reading this story, I missed Lenzi and Alden(even though they were in the story they were not the main characters!)

Overall Paul's point of view was interesting to read and I am left wondering if there's going to be a third novel!?

Fragile Spirits is Mary Lindsey’s companion to her debut, Shattered Souls. While this is a new story with a new Protector and Speaker, I was happy to see some familiar faces in the story as well. In a different twist, this time we get the Protector’s point of view instead of the speaker. Paul is Vivienne’s Protector and Vivienne is unlike anyone he’s ever met, she’s sure to be a challenge for him. Vivienne is a smart and sassy girl that I pretty much adored! She has a bit of an attitude but it works for her.

The story opens up in a way that pretty much answered all my questions I had left over from Shattered Souls. Smith is still around and a problem. After the fiasco he caused to upset Alden and Lenzi, who make a few appearances in this book as well, Paul is readying himself to meet his Speaker that he’s finally been assigned, but she was not at all what he was expecting. Vivienne with her pink hair and big black combat boots could careless about the ghosts that are trying to talk to her. She has only one thing on her mind that caused her to join in with the Intercessor Council and use her gifts, and that is revenge.

A ghost killed her aunt and is what led her on her course for revenge. She’s determined to find the ghost who did it and end them permanently. But Vivienne and Paul have a rougher go of things than Alden and Lenzi did. Since this is Paul’s first gig at being a Protector, this is basically his first life cycle and there are no memories to work with. He has to convince Vivienne that they could be a great team, if only she was willing to give him a chance. The hunt for Smith becomes the next focal point for Paul and Vivienne and naturally, Lenzi and Alden are there as well as Race and Maddi and a new apprentice of Charles, Cinda.

It’s sad to already know that this series is over! There was such possibilities to be had with Race! I felt like he had a story to tell there too. But I was still pleased to see that all was wrapped up in this story, there were no little nuisances that went unaddressed. All was resolved, which was a plus! Looking back I saw that there was a three year gap between these books and I can’t imagine how everyone felt during that time of unknown! Had I not had these two books ready go in a back-to-back readathon, I would’ve been more upset over Shattered Souls.

I think this series could have done wonders had there been dual point of views between Speaker and Protector. While I still enjoyed how Mary did things, I can’t help but wonder what things might have been like had she gone that route. But then the surprising twists and shocks that occurred might not have had the same effect, so there’s that to consider.

The pacing to this one was good. Pretty spot on when you think about it. It wasn’t overly fast or action packed but it wasn’t dreadfully slow either. It was the perfect middle man, so to speak. It almost was a one-day read for me but sadly things kept getting in the way for a proper reading day.

And of course there was another well built in romance. It’s becoming a standard thing with the Speaker and Protectors to eventually get together. While it was a different situation for Lenzi and Alden, I have to say that I liked how Paul and Vivienne finally came together. Theirs was a slower build-up as in the beginning it seemed that they would never even work well together. Although, I wouldn’t have minded just a little more kissing! Lol.

Overall this one was a pretty good read. While I would’ve liked a few things enhanced more, I can definitely I say I enjoyed it a bit more than I did the previous novel. Perhaps, because I am more accustomed to the world now that I’ve had some experience in it. The only other thing I would’ve like was more ghosts. Yes there are the occasional spirits that get their help, but I guess I just wanted a few more or have moments that terrified me because of said ghosts. But in the end, Fragile Spirits was definitely a worthy read!

The first thing that I noticed right off the bat is that this is not a continuation of Lenzi & Alden's story. Yes, they are in the story, but as secondary characters. If you're going into Fragile Spirits looking for all Lenzi & Alden all the time, you won't find it. Fragile Spirits tells the story of two people who are fairly new to the Intercessor Council as they try to find their way around their new roles in a working relationship together. And it's a fantastic ride.

MCs

Paul is a straight-laced, by-the-book kind of guy. He's been around the IC for a while and it shows. I loved the loyalty that just shined out of Paul in all of his actions. His quiet watchfulness starts to fall away and the growth of his character was enjoyable to read. As the book progresses, we get to see quite a few sides to Paul, yet his overall goal to be a Protector remains intact.

Vivienne is Paul's exact opposite. She's outspoken, brash, a little volatile, insanely smart, and has awesome hot pink hair. I instantly fell in love with her sass, snark and banter with nearly every character in the book. Vivienne is used to being on her own, so when she starts to trust the group she works with, it electrifies her. She is sort of forced into her role as a Speaker, but it becomes clear that she's really good at it [in a sort of unconventional way].

And the swoons? They come from Vivienne:

"I wonder what your lips feel like" or "Can I ride with you? .... I'd rather be with you than anyone."

Secondary characters:

Race: He is snarky and provides a bit of comic relief when it's really needed. He is fiercely dedicated to the IC and his family of Speakers and Protectors. Race is a lot of fun, but I feel like we haven't even scratched the surface of his character. I would have loved to see more of him.

Lenzi & Alden: It was awesome to see them again, even as secondary characters. They have some great scenes [and one that is just so heartbreaking], as well as provide a great Speaker/Protector relationship for Paul to observe. Their presence was just enough to remind me that I needed to reread Shattered Souls ASAP.

Plot & Pacing:

For me, Fragile Spirits, was very character driven. While story plot line was pretty straight forward [and is revealed pretty early in the story], we only get snippets of the characters. Mary reveals important back story for both Paul and Vivienne in increments. Not one to wait patiently, I would normally be losing my mind over getting tidbits. However, this works perfectly. It kept the story moving right along and kept me furiously turning the pages.

Huge thanks to Mary for offering the arc in exchange for an honest review!!
