April 16, 2021Long ago but not so far away I stopped in the Netherlands in order to mark a Rembrandt anniversary, I visited several galleries and museums and after such laborious efforts I naturally needed some refreshment and made my way into a hostelry keen to order a panncake and a mug of beer or a glass of cooling coffee or something along those lines, Wisely I had armed myself with a phrasebook and I carefully attempted to memorise what I would need to say, but horrifically I felt the words becoming German in my mouth and as the waitress waited I broke out into a cold sweat.
This book of twelve chapters does not promise to help you to order pancakes, but if you worked through one lesson a week then that would be more or less three months. In practise, I find such books difficult, intimidating even, so to warm myself up I started on the Duolingo course. Duolingo at time of writing is free to use, and the language courses were compiled by volunteers, but I found it accessible and a soft way of learning a language, although I feel that gamification in general is pretty dangerous and unhealthy for the brain. Eventually I tried to do the reverse course too - learning English from Dutch - which taught me that I don't know English at well.
I am not sure if the book takes the reader to a one or even two thousand word vocabulary, but the appendix includes real live wild Dutch texts (with supporting vocabulary lists). The verb declinations and grammar is not extracted into an additional grammar section, but are only there in the text - so this is not an ideal book for checking up on details, and at one point the author announces that she will no longer show the past participle when she introduces new verbs which I felt was a little unfriendly. However it is plainly laid out and explains things nicely and it was a fairly cheap book whose front and back covers are richly decorated with Dutch clichés.
Anyhow it gave me enough confidence in the basics to start the book, and after a while to read Kaas . Eventually I ran aground at the end of chapter six and left the book to slumber for perhaps three months before picking it up and reading a chapter or two a day just to get to the end of the book so as to complete a first reading, which is necessary preparation for a second reading.
If I am confessing, then I must also make clear that if I did the exercises then I did so only in my head, not writing down answers on paper.

So I have a book now same one love it I could say a lot of words like (mooi) which mean beautiful and more l(leak) nice and fruits vegetables normal food plurals adjectives adverb verb love this book so ummmm.... i you see this review you would know it’s fantastic and now I am on lesso 51 proud and I wish there are 10 stars rather the 5

It actually took my five years to get through it, but I finally did! :) I learned a lot a long the way, and the book's grammar explanations are superbly clear. I also enjoyed the unique conversations; it was more interesting than going through a nearly phrasebook approach.

A nice attempt at bringing self-guiding language textbooks to the next level. But if you lack motivation and inspiration for studying, you are going to have a pretty hard time finishing any suck book.

Learning Dutch from a book.....meh. Too. many. grammar. rules. Need a private tutor and need more listening/speaking exercises. I'm gonna learn this language, dammit.

August 2, 2021Putting this one aside for now - I've already returned the book/CD set to the library. I've only got up to p.24 so I'm not going to rate it yet.
This Hugo course feels a bit disorganised for my liking - and while I like being able to translate sentences already, "Ik heb een leeuw in de tuin" is not exactly a sentence I'm going to be using all that often. It hasn't taught me basic greetings or how to introduce myself yet - and is throwing a lot of grammar and long lists of vocabulary at me very quickly, without it being organised in any clear order of topics or in a way that makes practical sense.
I think a more sensible course of action would be to find something like the Teach Yourself Beginners.../Getting Started in Dutch course, something aimed specifically at absolute beginners, then come back and try this one again once I've got the hang of the basics and feel a bit more able to handle long sections of grammar.
(In case you're wondering: "Ik heb een leeuw in de tuin" = "I have a lion in the garden". A fun sentence, but not particularly practical for most of us).

HUGO - Dutch in Three Months, Simplified Language Course by Hunter http://www.amazon.com/Dutch-Months-Co... is an EXCELLENT book for learning or brushing up on Dutch (writing and speaking)!!! Pic of mmy book available in HTML.
I recently graduated fromm a Dutch Course (NT2) Nederlands Taal Tweede (Dutch 2nd language) which was conducted 90% strictly in Dutch. I amm a middle-age learner so this was a real challenge for mme. I was alway on a the look out for Dutch language books that had explanations in English. In mmy opinion this book best I've comme across to date. The lessons are short enough to keep focus, explanations are very clear, and the book is well laid out. I got mine at a used book store; it did not comme with an accommpanying CD. It is best to find one if you do not have access to a Dutch teacher/tutor or classes!!!
I give high recommendations to this book for anyone wanting to learn in a short timme very basic Dutch or those wishing to refresh their lessons.

September 13, 2010I've checked out about three different Dutch language books fromm the library. Hugo in 3 months Dutch ~ is the latest find. Mmy husband - Mmmichael is Dutch. He says that this books lessons are well laid out and explains a lot to him in English about the Dutch language. Mmy Mmmichael claims that this is an excellent book! I hold mmy Mmmichael's recommendation in high regard. I am hoping to find the accommpanying CD's to boost mmy Dutch language learning experience!
