Return of the Assassin is the shocking continuation of the saga of El Rey, the notorious Mexican cartel super-assassin whose legacy of impossible kills has earned him the reputation as the most lethally effective hit man in the world. Faced with impossible choices as he races against time, El Rey must return to a cartel underworld where the smallest slip means instant death, on a suicide mission to save the life of a young woman whose escape and survival is inexorably linked to his own.
In the third fast moving episode of the El Rey saga (fourth if you count the prequel), El Rey is in a maximum security prison awaiting trial. At the same time, the daughter of the President of Mexico has been kidnapped by the Sinaloa drug cartel.
Author Blake borrows a little from John Carpenter’s Escape From L.A. in that El Rey is broken out of prison during a transfer to see the judge, injected with a drug that will assure his death if he doesn’t cooperate with the Mexican authorities in rescuing the president’s daughter from the cartel.
Pretty standard fare for a thriller, with the primary difference of the characters all being Mexican instead of U.S. And, as such, the locale is, for the most part, Mexico, not the United States. A nice variation as far as I’m concerned.
Spoiler: Blake leaves open the possibility of additional El Rey novels.
Finished the last book in the series and hated to see it end! El Rey is a character that you hate with a passion..for awhile. You never end up loving him, but you end up understanding him and why he does what he does. He's a monster, but you are rooting for him in this book. Blake's characters are always so real you feel like you know them. I really liked Captain Cruz, his determination and personal character make him a hero even though it doesn't come together the way he wants. Russell Blake is becoming one of my favorite authors. He always delivers in his books, an interesting page turner that you have to pay attention to, but it's never too hard to keep up with. Five star!
Last book ended as a cliffhanger. This one picks up where it left off. Cruz and El Rey's characters are thrown together in a different way, and their relationship is complicated, making it a fun read.
Blake does an outstanding job breaking El Rey out of prison undercover and sending him on another mission. Then we get pulled along on this fantastic mission with El Rey and all he goes through to rescue Maria. What a great tale he wines, full of intrigue and what happens next. He even shows Maria addicted to Heroine, and in the rescue she goes into withdrawal. Awesome 5
I like Russel Blake because the pace of his books. This one is not different. Action page after page in a rhythm that you just reading. Very entertaining and addictive.
Back on track after in this last volume (and while I don't know, given the direction the book takes, I'm guessing this will likely be the series' last volume, though who knows?). Action-packed and for the most part, from the assassin's point of view, which gives it a unique feel. Thoroughly recommend the series for anyone who likes thriller type novels.
El Rey is sprung from prison to help the government with a special project. I found it amusing that he's the worst criminal in history until they need his services. Then it's okay. Anyway, the book is filled with lots of memorable dialogue and is fast-paced. I read it in a few days. Off to read Blood of the Assassin next.
