Godzilla descends further into the pit! Godzilla navigates a city that can never be destroyed as demonic versions of his greatest foes wait for the perfect moment to strike!
Bob Eggleton is a science fiction, fantasy, and horror artist. Eggleton has been honored with the Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist eight times, first winning in 1994. He has also won the Chesley Award for Artistic Achievement in 1999 and was the guest of honor at Chicon 2000.
Eggleton's drawing and paintings cover a wide range of science fiction, fantasy, and horror topics, depicting space ships, alien worlds and inhabitants, dragons, vampires, and other fantasy creatures. His view on space ships were that they should look organic, and claimed that as a child, he was disappointed with the space shuttles and rockets NASA produced; they were nothing like fantasy artists of the twenties and thirties had promised. His fascination with dragons originated with his childhood interest of dinosaurs, which can be seen in the book Greetings From Earth. His paintings are commissioned and bought at sci-fi conventions, and used as book covers.
Eggleton received massive encouragement from his father, in the form of books, supplies, visits to museums of space and aeronautics and support during the career choices he made. Eggleton dropped out of his art college, because he felt it was not for him.
Eggleton is a fan of Godzilla and worked as a creative consultant on the 1998 film Godzilla and while in Japan appeared as an extra in one of the more recent films.
Asteroid 13562 was named Bobeggleton in his honor.
Where the previous book just made the bump from 3 stars to 4, this one is firmly in the five star category.
It appears that each book will have a different creator so they will have different art styles, storytelling, and feel to them.
In the first issue I really liked the art and was blown away by the detail and enormity of lines in use.
Here, I was floored by quality of art and emotions they pulled out of me. Expecting to see more of the same art style from the first book, the first page caught my breath. It felt hot and slick with sweat and angry with pure rage. The box within of Godzilla's eye catches me everytime I look at the page. The determination is obvious and one of greatest of Godzilla's characteristics that runs through the history of the creature.
We get battles with some of the great's of Godzilla's adversaries in demon form including Rodan, Anguirus, Varan, and King Ghidorah.
The two page opening spread with Demon Rodan is fantastic with Rodan flying through ash clouds from giant erupting volcanoes and lava flowing through the streets of the city below.
With all of the great panels, pages, and spreads on display here, my favorite is probably the establishing page with Demon King Ghidorah emerging from a blinding light on top and the spiny back of Godzilla below.
It is a fantastic, ominous page. This is a chilling page and you can't see how Godzilla has any hope of standing even, let along defeating the monster.
Wow, I never expected something as good as this from a Godzilla book and will be surprised if they are are able to reach this level again. I am so glad that I decided to read this one tonight.
