Las Vegas. Bright lights, fountains of booze and oh yes, a beautiful woman.
A dream Vegas getaway turns into a nightmare when our main character wakes up, covered in blood, in a hotel room he doesn’t recognize with a woman dead in the bathroom!😱
Now it’s go time!
Can’t say more than that! You just have to read this one! The less you know going in the better.
I listened to the audio and the narrator did a fantastic job keeping me on the edge of my seat!
Do you enjoy crime thrillers? If yes, this book should be at the top of your list.

I have to admit upfront that The Killing Roomwasn’t the type of thriller that I would normally read. Just the same, when all of my friends and colleagues with Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse started clamoring over this one, I knew that I had to read it, no ifs, ands, or buts. And while my first statement is still definitely true, the action-packed thrills and chills were utterly addictive. Despite the fact that the plot had a definite “dad book” vibe, this thriller loving fiend still inhaled it from beginning to end.
With a fast-paced, propulsive storyline that just never let up, the claustrophobic feel simply oozed from the pages. But the twists were the true winners for me. Time after time, I was entirely blown away by a new unexpected link or surprising revelation. And as they quickly blew apart every one of my guesses, the action movie-like plot rolled on with adrenaline-pumping speed. Needless to say, there wasn’t much not to love.
The characters ran the gamut from cold-hearted villains to possible heroes. At the same time, they were all finely layered. Unlike a Marvel type film, they all had their good sides—and their bad. Up to and including our narrator. What I particularly liked, however, were the multiple POVs. Through it, I got a glimpse into all of their psyches. While perhaps not all that deep, each persona was on the cusp of fully fleshed out. Especially our hero. Now I look forward to learning more about him and his past in the sequel, Enemy of the State, which comes out in August.
All in all, while I wouldn’t have typically picked up this novel given the general vibe, I’m so glad that I did. With one epic game of cat-and-mouse and no end to the slights of hand, this was one book that truly kept me guessing. And with a conclusion that both deftly wrapped up the plot but also set it up perfectly for the sequel, there’s every chance that I’ll be diving straight into the next book in the series. So even if it sounds somewhat outside of your wheelhouse, give this crime thriller a try. It just might surprise you. After all, it certainly did so for me. Rating of 4 stars.
Thank you to Robert Swartwood and Blackstone Publishing for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
PUB DATE: Out now (Enemy of the State comes out on August 20, 2024)
First of all a massive thank you to Robert for sending me a copy of his new book all the way to Australia! I was so happy to receive it.
The Killing Room is a fast paced crime novel that will have you turning those pages all day.. yep, I devoured this book in a day. I was completely hooked from the very beginning and all those twists and turns … my goodness. So many surprises. You will never guess where this book is heading believe me.
The Vegas setting was perfect, the strip with all the bright lights and money, to the desert and the heat. It all played such a big part of the story. Having been to Vegas twice, it was all vivid in my head as I was reading it. And it made me want to go back.
The main character is one that you will be cheering on, despite some of his actions. I found him to be a likeable character, he was doing things for the right reasons.
Not going to say anything about the plot, you just need to read this book. It is going to be one of my top reads of the year.
*rereading July 2024 I stopped reading this book for reasons having nothing to do with the book. Now the second book is out and I want to read it! So I'm going back for what I missed!
*edit* second reread– Yep, that was pretty great!
Full review: Thank you to the author Robert Swartwood, publishers BlackstonePublishing, and TLC Book Tours, for an advance hardback copy of THE KILLING ROOM. All views are mine.
Three (or more) things I loved:
1. I like how Swartward writes about identity and assumptions. Hiding your identity can be easy. It's all about how you present yourself. First impressions are key. They're what stick in people's minds. p87
2. Character Work is excellent. Maria is so rich and authentic. She's so believable and adds so much texture to the story, especially where she intersects with "Mr. Ryan." Ch. 21
3. This book utilizes multiple POVs, which I don't always love, but I do here because only the primary protagonist gets first person narrator! Others get third person. I find this less confusing than switching between multiple POVs, all in first person.
4. There is some really wonderful, deep irony in this book, like the internal monologue on p130 that discloses a character's underlying cognitive dissonance about his own actions.
Three (or less) things I didn't love:
This section isn't only for criticisms. It's merely for items that I felt something for other than "love" or some interpretation thereof.
1. Sometimes the writing is a little awkward, like on p21. These kinks iron out as the book gets going!
THE KILLING ROOM - Second reading
Thank you to the author Robert Swartwood, publishers BlackstonePublishing, and TLC Book Tours, for an advance hardback copy of THE KILLING ROOM. I found a digital copy on Libby. All views are mine.July '24 Second reading, full review.
He has money to spend— the money he doesn’t want to give his ex- wife— and so the more he spends, the lighter his soul feels. p10
My second read through was even better than the first– still fun, tension high from waiting for the plot points to drop.
On average, a toilet tank lid weighs about ten pounds. They’re typically made of porcelain clay. It might not seem like much, but with enough force, you can kill someone. p89
Three (or more) things I loved:
1. This book has ample action, and is well-organized, so the pace is brilliant. For huge sections, the narrative simply flies by. I was hooked on this book for so many different design positives, including this one.
2. Swartwood possesses a minimalist style, which I really prefer when it is done well. Here word choice promotes clarity and good pace, and syntax and other style elements focus on distinguishing the many characters in as little space as possible. It's minimalism done beautifully.
3. Excellent ADHD advocacy in this book. This is how it's done: p128
4. On p76, a beautiful description of Dahl's mother as a gifted seawomen is also a brilliant metaphor for mothers, his mother, holding down the family, balancing out the swaying, often opposed needs.
Three (or less) things I didn't love:
This section isn't only for criticisms. It's merely for items that I felt something for other than "love" or some interpretation thereof.
1. The plot gets a little convoluted in the second half.

This was such an amazing read, my first by this author. It starts off with a bang and does not stop until it is over. I flew through this in a day as I had to know how in the world it was going to end, and I did not guess it at all. Definitely go into this one blind, you’ll be in for a wild, fun time. You must add this to your list, don’t let that cover deter you.
A huge thank you to the author, Blackstone Publishing, and Thriller Book Lovers Promotions for the #gifted copy to review.
First off, if a book has a Las Vegas setting - especially a crime thriller - there is no doubt in my mind that I’m in for a seriously entertaining ride!
Let me set this up:
Man goes to Vegas for a short vacay. Man meets woman in a nightclub. Man wakes up in strange hotel room the next day covered in blood with no recollection of the previous evening’s events. Man discovers same woman dead in the bathtub.
Now we’re talkin’! Let the fun begin!
This is a great crime thriller that is action packed! You’ll be on the edge of your seat reading this one!
Thank you so much to @robertswartwood @thrillerbookloverspromotions and @blondethrillerbooklover for this ARC

MY REVIEW::
This book started put with a BANG 💥 , I was entranced and couldn't put it down. I have to know what happened next 😱. I kept audibly 🗣 yelling NO, or RUN, at my kindle - my fiancé was giving me looks!😬
As the book went on it just kept getting better and better. One twist after the next. Like how could the story get ever better - oh let's just throw this tid bit in - YASSSSSS 🤯
I've never read an Avery Bishop or Robert Swartwood book before, but this had completely changed the game for me. SIGN. ME. UP. ✍️🏼
This is a MUST READ, so I MUST NOT spoil anything for you 🤭
2.5-Stars ^ 3.0-Stars - I Only "Just" Liked it" Reading the blurb for "#2, The Enemy of the State", it sounded interesting enough, encouraging me to buy both books #1 and #2, knocking off "#1, Killing Room" in two 'sittings'. My early thoughts on "#1, Killing Room" were that this was a debut novel by a new author, as the actual writing seemed somewhat hackneyed and clichéd. A quick check revealed that Swartwood has over 30 novels to his credit, so I decided that maybe his writing style was just 'not for me'.
As I have come to expect, Edoardo Ballerini's narration was very well done.
Extracts from my Listening Activity: 14/10/24 @ 0%: Commenced: 14/10/2024 14/10/24 @75%: "A new author (for me), a 'deal' to buy #1 and #2, and Edoardo Ballerini on song - not a lot to lose 😉. OK so far👌, but no great excitement either. I did listen to the 75% in one 'sitting', so no easy/early DNF for this one!" 15/10/24 @99%: "Despite having listened to it in two 'sittings', one long, the other short, ultimately this action novel was not really a satisfactory listening experience."
A businessman wakes up in a Las Vegas hotel room that isn’t his and finds a dead woman in the bathtub. He promptly gets arrested for murder and some shady business goes down with the detectives.
I loved the premise of this but didn't love how it played out. I want to avoid any hint of spoilers, so I will leave it at this: the way the truth is revealed is one of my major pet peeves in thriller (or any) writing. There were some exciting moments and everything was super fast-paced which made for an engaging, quick read, so I'd recommend this for people looking for an action + crime thriller who don't mind some (to me) huge cheats when it comes to the plot.
* thanks to Blackstone Publishing and Thriller Book Lover Promotions for the review copy. The Killing Room publishes August 22.
This is an action packed book that I could not put down. I appreciated the short chapters. I enjoyed how the character’s back stories were woven throughout the book instead of a large info dump. I don’t think I have read a storyline quite like this one before and I’ve read A LOT of books. So it was very refreshing to read something different. Those last few lines I was thinking “are you serious”?! I’m ready for the next book!
Thank you to the publisher and author for this early copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
I really liked the premise of the story and it started out exciting, fast paced and kept me turning pages, unfortunately once the truth was revealed it just kind of slowed down for me. The last few pages were a little strange, weird mental conversations with the brother seem out of context to me. The end of the book appears to indicate that there will probably be a second book, I'm just not sure if I'm rushing to get it. Having said that, if crime-thrillers are your thing, this has enough action to keep it interesting.
I found the book overhyped, contrived, and unrealistic. I listened to it on Audible and the narrator did a good job keeping me somewhat engaged but not enough for me to rate the book higher than three stars. Fortunately, it was offered at a reduced price of $1.99. I would have been very disappointed if I wasted full credit on the book.
The Killing Room. My fellow readers. Y’all this book. I am so happy that I was given the opportunity to read this book. Listen to this. I call my self critiquing the writer over the opening scenes of the book. right?! I was giving him advisements on this and on that. After reading my highlights on Goodreads I bet the writer was like, Mwa?! You as the reviewer is trying to tell me how to write my book? Who-are- you? And how dare you? I have to be truthful. The beginning of book did have me asking, “what have I gotten myself into?” Like I said before, I offered up a number of scenarios that the writer could engage their readers with. Primarily around the opening scene and so on. Meanwhile in the back of my mind, right? As I was writing my so called “notes of advisements”, I was praying to God that I didn’t insult writer. I was consistently trying to word or re-word my thoughts in a fashion so that the writer could see my reasonings, etc. Anyway I continued reading the book. A few moments later…why did I slam my hand down on my bed? I’m at the part with the maid. I said WTH?! I immediately rushed to my Goodreads app. I was desperately trying to update my notes to my review before anyone or more specifically the writer, has seen what I had to say. I also made a special note to the writer, “you got me good. You got me real good.” Needless to say after that clarifying moment my feelings about the book has changed considerably. I tucked myself under the covers and allowed my-self to be carried way by an exceptionally good book. The writing is simply amazing. The main character Daniel Burke?? He reminds me of Ethan Hunt. The opening part of the story slowly moves me towards the realization that the small actions and information begins it’s unraveling. The unraveling moments are like a string that represents the characters and their connections. It also represents the characters desperation of the need to have questions answered. The excitement and suspense behind the characters actions is one of the many strong resources that are used to keeps the book moving. Moving to a satisfactory ending or maybe not so satisfying ending. The plot is strong and matches the logical events of the story and the actions of the characters. I absolutely loved Daniel’s character. I chose him as my favorite character, because the man moved through the book with some swagger that only James himself owned in Bond the movies. From the description of Daniel I visualized him as a 6ft tall Jack Reacher with muscles out to there. I pictured his physical built like a perfectly fit Adonis. “I know.” I have a thing with imagining the male main characters as Adonis in all my books that I read. Just go with it alright. I take Daniels character as a very smart man who loves challenges. The man could probably beat you at chess with two moves before you can even look him in the eye as an opponent. He makes it his mission to stay ten steps ahead of his adversaries. He’s like an enforcer who fears no one. I like how the writer reveals Daniels emotional story through the chaos that surrounds him. I had a clear and understanding viewpoint to Daniels motivation that kept him going. The entertaining parts of the book for me are during the fast action and descriptive detail scenes. These scenes are brilliantly written. The next best parts are the characters. Each one is introduced into the book during some defining moments that hooks you into the meat of the story. These reviling moments will have you asking WTH is going on in Vegas? At times you are reminded of the olds days in Vegas, but with modern day crime. There are two more main characters, detectives Sutton and Ortiz, who brings some exciting moments to the criminal aspects of the story. Between Sutton and Daniel it was like, who was playing who? Sutton probably visualized Daniel as a chihuahua. A mean a** ankle biter constantly biting, demanding answers and accountability. To me Sutton comes off as an arrogant know it all. He’s a self proclaimed wannabe king pin of Las Vegas. He openly weaves his way through the streets of Vegas as if he’s the one who holds the keys to your darkest secrets. And it is him and him alone who can absolve you of all your sins by making them all disappear. This is when your stakes start stacking up and it’s either your in or your out. There is no in between. However, for Sutton, there’s always bigger fish in the sea. I was on the fence with Ortiz’s, but it’s his family from the book that humanizes him. Ortiz’s character is the one who had me questioning his thinking during some sequences of events in the storyline. There’s another question that kept nudging me, how did Daniel come to be in Vegas? What brought him their? The answers to those questions are well above my pay grade. The research and background information of Vegas was explained very well. You can tell that the writer really took their time with the research on the infamous city. These parts helped the book seems so real to you. So with all that, you late knight readers you. This book is amazing. The characters have some raw and emotional defenses that are totally awesome. You guys, the scene between Daniel and the senator in the hotel room. You could cut that tension with a knife. You could hear a pin drop as these two strong forces who sits across from one other. It’s almost like mind a game to see how much does the other one knows. As they stare down one another. The high stakes and the game of life are the intensifying moments that aggressively jostle the events that has you wanting to know how the book would end. With Assets being burned under the dark shadows of the deserts, Daniel races to bring some kind of justice to his nemesis. The same nemesis who forced Daniel’s hand to re-visit the Killing Room. I for one can not wait for the next book in this series to drop. I give this book two snaps and a, Daniel Burke you have a fan for life. Good luck and stay safe. This message will self destruct in ten seconds. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
“But…if I didn’t remember killing the woman, would I be held accountable for her death?”
A businessman wakes up in a seedy hotel in Vegas to find a dead woman in the bathroom; her throat cut. With no memory of the night before, he runs.
Folks, that’s really all I can say without giving too much away! What I CAN say, is that I was immersed from page ONE and the tension, mystery and propulsive action DID. NOT. LET. UP! With short chapters, I absorbed this novel as fast as my little eyes and fingers would go! “The businessman” is enigmatic and captivating with a distinctly antihero feel; my favorite kind of character! He’s someone you can root for despite their flaws. I LOVED the first person viewpoint as we get to know him and his past. Who is he? What happened? As answers are revealed, what you think is happening, is flipped on its head!
The Killing Room is a brilliantly crafted mystery that morphs into an all out action masterpiece with twists and turns that will have you desperately hanging on for the thrill ride. As soon as I was finished I wanted MORE. I literally got chills at the end and immediately NEEDED to get my hands on book two, Enemy of the State (out 8/20/24)! Robert Swartwood is solidified as an auto read author for me. I also want a film adaptation; like yesterday!
Thank you Robert Swartwood for my gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

Waking up in Las Vegas with a dead woman is not what Stephen Walker had planned. All is not what it seems and no one is who you think they are. Another action packed thriller from Robert Swartwood. This one will keep you guessing from page one!
This book is a heart-pounding, what the heck is happening?, wild ride from start to finish!
I can't say The Killing Room is my typical read, but it sure was a lot of fun. Action-packed and thrilling, it was hard to put down and such a quick and fun read. I loved the character development and the way the plot unfolded. The writing was descriptive and I could see the lights of the Vegas strip, hear the ding of the slot machines, and feel the heat of Las Vegas through every page.
The Killing Room is the start of a series and it definitely left me wanting more! We learn so much about our protagonist and while we can't say he is a saint, it was easy to feel empathy for him and root for him on his mission.
There are some gruesome scenes, so this book may not be for everyone. But if you're a fan of pulse-pounding, well-paced, and exciting stories, this one is definitely for you!
Thank you to Thriller Lovers Promotions, Blackstone Publishing, and Netgalley for the copy.
I have to say that this was my first great surprise book of the new year. Definitely my first 5 start review. :)
I came into this fairly cold. I think that I just read the summary, but did not take a peek into any reviews and just jumped in. Boy was it a wild ride.
The story starts off almost easily. A man wakes up in a hotel room with the body of a dead woman in the room and no memory of the night before. Afraid of being accused of murdering her....he decides to run. Unfortunately, through a series of coincidences, he is caught by two detectives and then that is where the real story starts.
Without going into spoilers (because you REALLY want to experience this story without knowing what the twist is...believe me) all I will say is that it is action packed and once it gets started, it holds a fast and furious pace throughout the entire book.
I enjoyed the writing, I liked the development of the characters and the main male MC was a good protagonist that was easy to like and to root for.
I listened to this mostly all on audio and have to say that the narrator -Edoardo Ballerini - is a particular favorite of mine so I knew that the narration was going to be good - and it was.
So now I'm off to find some more books by this author because as I said before - it was a very, very nice surprise.
WOW. Talk about some badass motherfuckery! 🤯 What a ride that was! 😮
With intense pacing and pulse-pounding suspense, THE KILLING ROOM is one of those books you’ll fly through and then immediately wish you could read again for the first time. What an absolute masterpiece. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank goodness I’m sitting on an advance copy of ENEMY OF THE STATE because that ending—gah!! We’re heading straight into book 2…bring it on, Swartwood. Bring. It. On.

This is a MUST READ, so I MUST NOT spoil anything for you 🤭
This was my first read by Robert Swartwood. I often read books based on covers and never would have read this book based on the cover. This book was great! It was thrilling and interesting. There is a ton of action so it reads pretty quickly. I loved the main character and found myself rooting for him throughout the book. The setting was so cool, I felt like I was transported to Vegas.
The book is about a recently divorced businessman named Stephen Walker who goes to Vegas! He wakes up in a hotel room with a dead woman in the bathroom. When picked up by the police, he is given the choice of face the music of murder OR pay the cops and they will make this disappear. He agrees to the latter but then finds an escape route. Throughout the book he is trying to prove his innocence. The story is wild and I can't go into any more detail without ruining the plot, so l'll just say read this book! You will not be disappointed. That ending though...
Thank you so much to @robertswartwood @blackstonepublishing @thrillerbookloverspromotions and @blondethrillerbooklover for my copy of this book! My opinions are my own!
Talk about twisty! This book has it in spades. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas right? Wrong! Opening up with a man waking up in a hotel room that’s not his, with no recollection how he got there and finding the dead body of the women he was with the night before … What happens next is a propulsive read full of surprises. This is my first by this author, but definitely not my last. Add this to your list. Many thanks to @blackstonepublishing @robertswartwood #netgalley for e-arc
