[ The Solid Earth An Introduction to Global Geophysics ] [ THE SOLID EARTH AN INTRODUCTION TO GLOBAL GEOPHYSICS ] BY Fowler, C. M. R. ( AUTHOR ) Dec-20-2004 Paperback
The second edition of this acclaimed textbook has been brought fully up-to-date to reflect the latest advances in geophysical research. It is designed for students in introductory geophysics courses who have a general background in the physical sciences, including introductory calculus. New to this edition are a section of color plates and separate sections on the earth's mantle and core. The book also contains an extensive glossary of terms, and includes numerous exercises for which solutions are available to instructors from solutions@cambridge.org. The text is a bit dull so you tend to just flip through it for definitions and if you need them explained you have to read the text around them a lot more than once to get into your head what the book is actually saying. The examples at the end of each chapter are also very weak. I'm glad I had a good teacher because I could not have gotten though the class with just this book as support, even if the class itself was really basic.
Extremely good book! I used it to prepare my PhD defense on astrophysics. In Germany you need to get 2 side subjects, and I chose Geophysics is one. Did not do any exercise listed on the chapters, only sketched some, but I read it cover to cover. Fascinating. Great density of information and learning curve.
As I was reading I was putting notes with questions in post-its. When I had a few I would go to the professor and have a long conversation about those points. This was my main book to prepare one of my side-subject to of my PhD defense. It went really well. This book really gives you an overall perspective of the field and allows you to understand the basics of even latests papers in the field, and (in my case) grasp a deeper understanding of the solar interior, by means of analogies to the earth´s interior.
I would have given it more stars for content, but the version I got is printed on some odd kind of paper that is very smelly. After reading it for a fairly short period I get a headache. I sure wish I could get a copy on different paper, because there's a lot of good information there. I really enjoyed reading the older copy from the library.
