This book serves as an entry (Book with discussion questions inside) in The 52 Book Challenge 2021. This last challenge was perhaps the most difficult for me to find a book to fit the criterion, but I finally settled on this book, which doesn’t have discussion questions per say, but tsumego (Go problems).
It surveys principles and heuristics that should be used to decide the direction of play. Each principle is visually emphasized being in bold type and surrounded by a box border, making the principles easy to find and quickly review prior to a game.
Fundamental Principles of Go is written, research, and constructed rather well. This short book is divided into four chapters entitled: Key Points in the Opening, Relationships and Combinations, Effective Use of Joseki, and Invasion and Reduction with a fifth chapter diagramming particular invasion and separation formations. Each chapter is composed of several sections and a set of a dozen review problems. In each section, the fundamental principle is stated and then illustrated with numerous diagrams and accompanying text. Both the positive result of following the principle and the consequences of ignoring it are shown.
All in all, Fundamental Principles of Go is a wonderful introduction to the extremely complex game of Go.
It's already helping me a lot. I had no clue what to do with my first 10 moves in the game. Now I have a better strategy that I think is helping me to win more games.
