The Corpse with the Golden Nose

Rate this book
A heartfelt plea to look into the death of a world-famous vintner goes hand in hand with the opportunity to attend an exclusive gourmet event in British Columbia's stunning wine country. How can overindulgent foodie and criminologist Cait Morgan resist?

Sure that the award-winning owner of a family-run vineyard was murdered, Cait shares her findings with Bud Anderson, a retired homicide cop. But he is convinced that the woman took her own life, whatever her grief-stricken sister might say. That is, until death strikes once again, in the neat rows of grapevines that clamber up the banks of magnificent Lake Okanagan. Uncovering obsessions that might have fuelled murderous thoughts among the victim's wacky neighbours is a start, but as Cait unravels the clues, she realizes that more lives are at stake. Can she think, and act, quickly enough to thwart the killer?

The Corpse with the Golden Nose is the second book in the Cait Morgan Mysteries, a classic whodunit series featuring the eccentric Professor Cait Morgan.

“I trust you, Bud. You’ll find out what happened to my Annette, won’t you?”

Edgar Allan Poe created the locked-room murder genre in THE MURDERS AT THE RUE MORGUE. Agatha Christie elevated the cozy mystery variation of the genre to a fine art in masterpieces such as MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and DEATH ON THE NILE. Welsh Canadian author, Cait Morgan, has done her forebears proud with THE CORPSE WITH THE GOLDEN NOSE, the second novel in the Cait Morgan series, a classic whodunit and a clever open air variation of the locked room mystery.

The death of a world famous vintner has been ruled a suicide. But her surviving sister is convinced otherwise. She’s quite sure it was a murder and she has set up an elaborate gourmet weekend feast in British Columbia’s beautiful Okanagan wine country to prove it with the help of her friend, police detective Bud Anderson, and his new love interest, criminologist Cait Morgan. In a moment of gauche, alcohol-driven over indulgence, she announces the true reason for the party to the assembled guests, “Bud’s here to find out who killed Annette, right, Bud? And I’m quite sure the killer’s here tonight.” So much for any discreet, undercover, detective work, LOL!

Like any other locked room mystery, THE CORPSE WITH THE GOLDEN NOSE is critically dependent on back story and individual character development of the dramatis personae and, in this regard, Cathy Ace succeeds in spades. She develops her characters, adds the spice of additional murders in the heat of the investigation with the imminent danger of more to come, AND, in the bargain, lovingly warms up Morgan and Anderson’s love relationship. Dialogue is unfailingly clever and credible and the plot moves along at a steady clip without a single drag moment in the entire novel.

For my money, the Cait Morgan series is now two for two. I’m a fan and I’m definitely looking forward to #3, THE CORPSE WITH THE EMERALD THUMB. Kudos, Cathy Ace.

My library didn't have the first book of this series so I decided to plunge into book two. I needn't have worried, it was easy to get my bearings and know which end was up. I have previously read three books in Cathy Ace's WISE Enquiries Agency and I really enjoyed them. I expected to feel similarly about this book and was honestly surprised that it didn't please me nearly as much. Please don't think it's a bad book because it's not. Maybe I just wasn't in the best frame of mind to appreciate it.

Maybe because there were four women in the WISE series to alternate between, it felt like it moved a little faster. I also found myself wishing that Cait Morgan and her love interest Bud, the retired cop, were better communicators. Cait hugged her info tight, possibly because Bud was so sure they were confirming a suicide, not investigating a possible murder. Still, they seemed to talk past each other, the dialogue often feeling a bit stilted. Bud didn't talk like a cop and they didn't act like a mature dating couple.

I'll definitely finish the WISE series (I've only got one left) but I don't think I'll be following up with Cait. There's a lid for every pot but this lid just doesn't fit me.

Agatha Christie set in the modern world, with great wallops of lovingly described food and drink.
Cait is such a fun, enjoyable character: not the young, glamorous action girl detective, nor the gossipy, ever-knitting Miss Marple type, but a living, breathing, real woman with her own foibles and self-admitted weaknesses. The story may be a little far-fetched, but it's a lovely romp of a read. (And I love the Doctor Who references!)

I just gave it a 2 because the setting and the descriptions were lovely but Cait bores me & annoys me and this mystery was underwhelming. I don't think it's worth going through the rest of the books.

Criminal psychologist Cait Morgan, is looking forward to a weekend of wine, food, and a little investigative snooping in British Columbia’s wine country. Her love interest, retired homicide detective Bud Anderson, however, isn’t so sure about this weekend. In fact, he wouldn’t be going if he hadn’t been invited by Ellen Newman, owner of a winery and B & B.

Although Bud hasn’t met Ellen in person, she has been his “grief buddy” for several months to help Bud comes to terms with the death of his wife a year earlier. Ellen has been mourning the loss of her sister Annette who committed suicide, or did she? Ellen doesn’t think so, and she’s frantically trying to get someone to believe her. The situation intrigues Cait, and given her specialty in victim profiling, she’s more than willing to meet Ellen and the suspects. It’s a decision she quickly comes to regret.

The Corpse with the Golden Nose is the second Cait Morgan adventure and a sheer delight for traditional whodunit mystery lovers. Since wine tasting is one of my favorite holiday pastimes, I was happy to read the wonderful descriptions while trying to figure out the killer’s identity. I liked the somewhat uncertain and edgy relationship between Cait and Bud, who often have differing viewpoints and lots of baggage from the past. The tension that comes and goes between them is compelling, and it will be interesting to see what happens to their relationship in future books. If you love traditional whodunits about wine, food, and lots of colorful characters, then you’ll really love this one.

We met Cait and Bud in the first book in this series, The Corpse With The Silver Tongue. This installment has them attending an exclusive gourmet event in British Columbia’s stunning wine country and investigating the death of a world-famous vintner.

Was she murdered or did she really commit suicide? Bud thinks she took her own life but Cait is not so sure. As Cait uses her special talents to piece things together she is led down a very surprising and dangerous path.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cathy Ace’s stories really have that Agatha Christie feel. Her protagonist collects information, follows clues, is lead astray and then all the pieces fall into place. She then brings all the suspects together and slowly reveals the truth and the killer.

I really loved the setting of this story and the wine making and tasting tidbits were very interesting. I especially enjoyed learning about the caves that were used for storage back in time and still used today.

Again she has given us a wonderful supporting cast, mostly suspects, each with their own set of eccentricities. The Moveable Feast was a great way to meet them all.

Bud, the retired cop and criminologist Cait make a terrific team! Ace has blended them together with a fine mystery and some fine wine for a superior story.

I am anxious to see where Cait’s adventures will take us next!

This is one of those books, that once you get started, you don't want to put it down. Cait Morgan, a criminal psychologist, is a great sleuth, she solved this murder that no one even suspected was a murder. When her boyfriend, retired cop, Bud, shows her a picture of two sisters, one who committed suicide and told her the story, she knew right away that it wasn't suicide. The sisters owned a winery and the surviving sister was Bud's "grief buddy" on a grief blog. She invites him and his "other" to the "Moveable Feast", Cait is all ready to go. When they get there, the meet an eclectic cast of characters, any one of them could have been the murderer. But as Cait digs deeper, she uncovers the killer, but will she be able to stop more killings.

This was a great cozy that kept me on the edge of my seat and kept me turning the pages. Great job Cathy Ace. I look forward to more Cait Morgan stories.

The ‘Corpse with a Golden Nose’ by Cathy Ace offers a study of obsession within an entertaining mystery novel.

This is the second book in the Cait Morgan Mystery Series. The first book which I reviewed was ‘The Corpse with the Silver Tongue’ which takes place at a dinner party in France. I loved the first book and likened the author to Agatha Christie calling it the quintessential cozy. While this book is very different in many ways from the first, the author has used many of the same tools and devices.

Criminal psychologist Cait Morgan is asked to accompany her significant other, retired policeman Bud Anderson, to a fabulous gourmet weekend. The catch is that Bud wants to help an e-mail grief buddy, Ellen, who is convinced that her sister was murdered, although the whole world says it was suicide. Cait thinks Ellen just might be right, and every time she's about to come over to the suicide camp, another anomalous fact points back to murder. This is so delightful that I really regret not reading it before, but at least I have the third in the series to look forward to.

I listened to both the first and second books of this series one after the other. They are narrated by the author whose performance takes some getting used to. And Cait is an interesting MC who also takes some time to warm up to. She is a criminal psychologist with a photographic memory who can be little over the top at times. But I will say her sarcasm and observations do make me laugh.

Though I wasn't completely sure about the series until I listened to this 2nd installment. The Corpse with the Silver Tongue was a 2 star read for me. So you can see that I liked this book much better than the first! I enjoyed the addition of Bud in Cait's escapades and I started to warm to the narration, probably because the different character voices were not as overdone this time around. I will be continuing the series, though the next ones are not available in audio, so it looks like I will need to hunt down the books.

I liked the character of Cait, but I wasn’t sure what Bud’s role was—he mostly hung around in the background and didn’t really help solve the mystery.

The setting, quirky characters, and all the talk about delicious food were fun. But this book reminded me why I struggle with Agatha Christie-style mysteries. The solution felt overly and convoluted & complicated. I’m not a fan of the big final reveal where everyone gathers and the detective explains everything in a long speech. Just not my cup of tea.

Review and and interview with the author originally published at The Bookwyrm's Hoard.

I really enjoyed The Corpse with the Golden Nose. Cait Morgan narrates the book. She has a distinctive voice: practical, very confident professionally, but a bit insecure personally and emotionally. Her training in criminal psychology and her work as a victim profiler give her a much better background for investigation than the typical cozy's amateur sleuth; she has a real talent for extrapolating from what she observes. In addition, Cait possesses an eidetic memory, a highly useful attribute for any detective. It's fascinating to "watch and hear" her replay scenes in her head, focusing on minute details and drawing conclusions from them. Cait's eidetic memory also provides insight into the ghosts in her own past: an abusive ex-husband and her parents' death.

Cait's "sidekick" is her former colleague and current boyfriend Bud Anderson. As a retired policeman, But is no stranger to investigations, and in fact, he instigates this one on behalf of his online "grief buddy" Ellen, who is convinced her sister's suicide was no such thing. Bud is clearly devoted to Cait; equally clearly, she's not quite sure of him yet -- or rather, she's very unsure of her own attractions.

Cathy Ace cites Agatha Christie as one of her formative influences, and it shows. The mystery is tightly plotted and exhibits Christie-style misdirection with all the clues available to the reader, who is nonetheless led down the garden path. A number of quirky secondary characters add to the Christie-like feel, yet this is very much a contemporary mystery, not a pseudo-Golden Age novel.

I found very little to dislike in The Corpse with the Golden Nose. I did feel that at times Bud took more of a backseat than he should, given his background and expertise. The exposition of the mystery held together pretty well, with one exception: the explanation of the suicide note didn't ring quite true for me. (I can't go into details without giving away spoilers.) Still, the mystery was so well-crafted over all that those are very minor quibbles.

I heartily recommend The Corpse with the Golden Nose to fans of Golden Age mysteries as well as cozies. I plan to read the first book, and I'll definitely be watching for the next installment!

4 STARS

I enjoyed The Corpse with the Golden Nose. But I do have to say that this book was a lot about wines and wine tasting that I don't really understand because I have never drunk any or even smelled it. So this part of the story I can't judge or tell if it made sense.
This is the second book in the Cait Morgan Mysteries. I was wrong who I thought the murder was but right when I guessed the motive for it. I had to put the book down and pick up a few times because of visits and phone calls. But was able to still follow the story okay. This is a cozy mystery, the bulk of the story happens over a couple of days. Lots of food and drink while Cait and Bud see if there was a murder or suicide. Not a lot of action but plenty of drama and the classic of gathering everyone out and saying who or why did not do it but build a case slowly till everyone saw the guilty party.
Bud is a retired cop. He retired after his wife was murdered. He now sees Cait and in fact did ask her to marry him earlier. She said after they dated for a year. He could ask her again. Bud is convinced it's suicide.

I like Cait and would love to read more of her mysteries. She is smart, older and has a great memory I am jealous of. Down fall is she smokes. Cait is a criminologist and teaches at the University. She can remember everything she sees and even smells. Reads really fast. If I could read that fast my pile of books to read would be lots smaller.
There was one scene in the book that seemed off to me. When Cait is locked in and Collin hears her, "She asks him to take a picture of the lock and show her. So that is what she remembered of the lock. but she should not have needed to see the lock again if she always can remember what she sees. But I could have read the scene wrong because my memory is very faulty.
Lots of suspects that I did not really like so I could see them being the murder but the murder was clear and motive was proven and made sense.
I was given this ebook and asked in exchange to review it and be part of the blog tour. This is totally my own opinion of the book.

Second in the Cait Morgan series, The Corpse with the Golden Nose sends criminologist-professor Cait and her retired lawman partner Bud Anderson into Canadian wine country in the beautiful British Columbia Okanagan.
Bud’s had a request from Ellen Newman to look into the suspicious suicide of her sister, Annette, co-owner of a prosperous family winery. Authorities agree that the despondent woman asphyxiated herself in her truck after drinking herself into a stupor. Her bizarre behaviour in recent weeks proved that she was not her usual self. Even more curious is her new will, leaving her half of the business to a dashing young vintner called Raj, a competitor. Why did she add “and his first-born”?
Highly organized Ellen has provided the duo with a dossier about the strange and contentious locals on the margins of her eccentric sister’s life. She’s also arranged it so that the sleuthing pair can enjoy a “moveable feast” at nearby wineries and homes, a prestigious “foodie” event. How better to assess the possibilities than to observe suspects relaxed and voluble after a few glasses?
Those who enjoy traditional closed-room mysteries with a tasty addition of food and wine will turn these pages with delight.

Trying to deal with the loss of his wife, Bud Anderson joined an online grief support cop. His "grief buddy", Ellen, has asked him to look into the death of her sister. The coroner ruled Annette's death suicide, but Ellen insists it was murder. When she invites Bud and a guest to the Movable Feast to meet the suspects, Cait, who is not only a criminal psychologist but a serious foodie, can't turn down the opportunity.

Although this is second in the series, if you haven't already read the first book, this works well enough on its own. There were a few references to what I assume was covered the first time out, but nothing crucial to the plot.

Having the protagonist as a woman in her late forties with a weight problem is a stroke of genius. Real women read mysteries, and sometimes we want believable characters who are like us. Cait was so realistic I could imagine her as a friend. Her obsession with food and references to Doctor Who didn't hurt, either.

Great fun for the cozy mystery set!

This is a good old fashioned murder mystery in the tradition of Agatha Christie. Cathy Ace gives us everything from romance, mystery, twists and turns galore, plus a cast of eccentric characters that will have readers laughing.

Each character is drawn to perfection and they come to life with each turn of the page. The story moved along at a nice pace and I found myself already thinking of Cait as a good friend. Even the location was described vividly bringing the reader right into the story.

I haven't had a chance to read the first book yet, although it's waiting for me on my Kindle, but I wish I had. It's not necessary to read them in order, but it would have given me a little more of an insight to Cait Morgan. I will definitely be reading it and I do hope there will be a third book in the series.

I'd gone off so called "cozies" for a while because I was finding them lacking - superficial, no depth, with nosy amateur sleuths who just annoyed me.
I'd been meaning to get to Cathy Ace's books as I've been following her on Facebook for some time but my "to read pile" was huge. I finally got hold of this second book in the series and dove in. Unusual for me as I always read a series from the first book!
It was very easy to get to know the characters even without having read the first book. Cait is intelligent and with her background as a criminal psychologist, didn't have the traits that annoy me so much in a lot of other mysteries. Bud plays her helpmeet well and is able to back her up as he is a retired cop (although the name "Bud" conjures up visions of Leave it to Beaver for me rather than ex cop!)
Ultimately, this book was well written in clear intelligent language that I appreciated. The rest of the characters were well drawn so that I could picture them which is something I like.
As I've got hold of the next book as well, my next read is set!

She did it again! I just finished and I’m so delighted that I was ever introduced to Cathy Ace as an author. As I become involved with her characters and the enticing details surrounding the story, I believe I have it figured out. Then I remember the first Cait Morgan book I read and that the story lines go much deeper. I remind myself that there will be a twist or turn yet to come. I finally just stop trying to be a detective and I set back and enjoy where the author take me. The Corpse with the Golden Nose captivates its’ readers with the aroma of a murder. Cait is invited by her ex-cop boyfriend Bud to attend a “moveable Feast” in the wine country of British Columbia. Surrounded by interesting and some quirky characters Cait Morgan adds to the picturesque scenery with her own unique talents and personality to help solve the puzzle. Sit back and relax you’re going to be entertained!!!

The second book in Cathy Ace's Cait Morgan Mystery series is even more delicious and deadly than the first! Cait finds herself wining and dining with her companion Bud who has a little investigating in mind between sipping and tasting delectable treats in British Columbia's abundant Okanagan Valley. Bud wants her to find out the truth about an apparent suicide of a beautiful wine expert whose sister has put to him that she doesn't believe her sibling would have killed herself. Plenty of twists, turns and tasty descriptions await the reader. Bravo Cathy Ace, for creating story lines that one can't wait to sink their teeth into!

This is the second in a series of mystery books about Cait, a middle aged criminology professor who has an eidetic memory, a less than flattering self image and a widower retired policeman. The series, so far, takes place in Canada, which has become a fun way to see the country and the people. This book is set within a food and wine festival and shares a host of delectable sounding morsels. There is a good was it a suicide or murder mystery with a bit of danger, wacky characters and some convoluted solving through psychology of the protagonist. All in all this is a fun series and I am looking forward to following Cait for a much longer time.

Criminologist and specialist in victim profiling Cait Morgan travels to the Okanagan wine country with her companion Bud Anderson (retired policeman)to investigate the murder of a world-famous vintner. While attending a 'moveable feast' (a gourmet culinary weekend) Cait collects clues and forms suspicions until another death precipitates a Poirot-like confrontation between Cait and all the participants of the feast (i.e. suspects.) I quite enjoy this series of intelligent mysteries, and look forward to the next.

I enjoyed the setting (Okanagan Valley wine district) and the intrigue in this murder mystery. Given the short time in which our heroine Cait has to acquaint herself with the situation and prove who did it, she accomplishes a lot -- but it became necessary to reveal all in a large room filled with all the book's characters, and I found this scenario a bit over-used. Still -- a very readable book, and I look forward to reading more in this series.

I was disappointed by this sequel to The Corpse With the Silver Tongue, which I had really liked. Cait seemed much more formulaic and Mary Sue-ish than in the first book, I couldn't for anything see what she saw in Bud, and the mystery plot was very, very thin. It was much too guessable. I hope any future books in the series return to the quality of the first.

I like the main character, Cait Morgan. She is funny, flawed, and very intelligent - perfect for a cozy heroine. She has the special gift of an eidetic memory. The second book in the series takes place in British Columbia during a gourmet event that has Cait eating delicious food at a different venue for every meal. If you know this character, you know you - and she - are in for a good time.

I wasn't sure about this book at first....this is the 2nd in a series and I didn't read #1 so there are references to the past that didn't make sense. however the book did get better.

I wouldn't classify this as a cozy (as I initially thought) but not a "heavy" mystery.

The "Nose" in question is that of an incredible wine connoisseur. The silver is a clue that would be a spoiler.
Any older woman who is comfortable in her own skin will totally appreciate Cait Morgan!
Bud Anderson (whose wife was recently murdered by mistake) is a mutual "Plus One" with Cait (forensic psychologist), and he is invited by his online "grief buddy" to come to the winery/inn for a fantastic foodie event and brings Cait with him. And to prove that the buddy's sister was murdered, not death by suicide. Imaginative twists and red herrings are great, but come for the mystery and stay for the laughs!
I always feel that you can't go wrong with the author as narrator because only they know how to do the snarks effectively.
