Before his death, Stibbs served as vice principal of Oak Hill Theological College in London. He edited several titles from InterVarsity Press, including The New Bible Commentary and Search the Scriptures.
I went through this book while in college - getting up each morning and using it for my devotions. Finished three years to the day from when I started, and got a half dozen friends to join me during that time. I wrote down the questions from the book and my answers, and now essentially have my own commentary of the Bible. I have used several discoveries from my reading to write papers which have been published. In short, this is one of the very best books and uses of time that anyone who is serious about Christianity can invest in. It gives one a sense of "ownership" to have carefully read the entire Bible. I was in college 35 years ago - can't think of anything I've done since (other than advanced degrees) that has been as valuable.
A great study guide that takes you through the bible in 3 years at a chapter a day. 2 questions every day. When you are finished you have written your own commentary and meditation on the entire bible.
This is a another book tha has had an immense impact on me. I have been through it twice and am slowly going throughit a third time. I credit the time I have spent meditating and responding to God through the questions in this book with giving me a broad and thoughtful picture of God and his character that I am sure I could have gotten no other way.
I am on my third time through using this book as an aid to my Bible study. It is excellent. It requires a time commitment of at least 20 minutes, but the benefits I get from it are worth it. Sometimes I don't even need the questions, the section of scripture is just so rich, God speaks to me directly. I think that by having used it for so long the questions have aided my ability to see truths and applications on my own now. This book is only an aid, it does not do the study for you, it helps you to study the word. There are no answers in it, it is an inductive study, designed to help you find truth and application in the Bible. I like the explanations that are given from time to time and also the cross references to help you get more out of a section.
I studied this whilst on an apprenticeship and made notes on my laptop. I recently got my notes on Leviticus printed into a hardback book which was very self indulgent and probably wrong! I have since decided to make my notes in my ESV scripture journal set. Sure it’s not typed up however all my notes are exactly where I want them and it’s perfect. There are times when I stray from doing these devotionals and to be honest there is no other book in the world that I think connects my to God more than this.
My daily companion for three and a half years, I can't recommend Search the Scriptures highly enough. It takes you through each book of the Bible day by day, unravelling tricky passages and apparent anomalies and presenting two or three questions to challenge you both intellectually and personally. This book allowed me to read the whole Bible in a focussed and structured way. "Heaven and earth may pass away, but my words will not pass away." (Matt 24:35)
Search the Scriptures is by far the best daily devotional study I have ever done. I have gone through it several times now and am constantly amazed its ability to meet you where you are. Its questions point you in a direction like a good guide and let you discover what lies ahead. Take the time to work through the book and you will be richly rewarded for your efforts! I promise.
A good way to study the Bible in depth. It is organized so that different sections and styles of books are studied with some variety. For example, the book of Psalms is split into 3 sections, one section in each year of the course. The questions are structured so that you could get by with a half hour a day, but sometimes the student gets diverted on tangents and spends longer. It took us over 4 years to get through all the questions, but it has been worthwhile.
My husband and I have used this book over the past three years to dive deeper into God's word. It helped make connections across scripture that we might not have made otherwise.
Probably a great book for those newer to Scripture. Went too slow for my taste, but did ask some great questions to reflect with. Slowing down with what one reads in Scripture is very important and helpful at times. If that is what you need, some reflective guidance at a slower pace, this may be the book that does it. I really enjoyed the slower pace at times and some of the questions did seem fresh. I would recommend this book for a slowed pace (meant for a 3 year study through) and/or for the one wanting to get acquainted who is fairly new to the bible.
This is a unique book in its approach to bible study. By spreading the study out over three years, "Search the Scriptures" encourages the reader to dig deep into a handful of verses at a time. This slow approach has given me several insights over the years and I refer back to my notes on a regular basis.
This book became my good friend over the last few years. It is designed to be a 3 year study through the entire Bible. The questions challenged my reading, and greatly helped me to drill down on my daily commune with scripture. I will move on to the next endeavor with great reluctance as I leave this old friend behind.
