Photonics technology has been developing at a rapid pace since this texts first publication 15 years ago. In the new, full colour Second Edition of this landmark book, two new chapters have been written to cover the advances in the field of photonics: Photonic-Crystal Optics and Ultrafast Optics. Other coverage includes detailed accounts of the primary theories of light, including ray optics, wave optics, electromagnetic optics, and photon optics, as well as the interaction of light with matter, and the theory of semiconductor materials and their optical properties. All figures have been redrawn for clarity and are now in living colour. References to book and articles have been thoroughly updated, and much of the material has been rewritten to improve readability. New problems and exercises are provided and, once again, a solutions manual for the exercises is available to instructors.
I don't think electrical engineers should be allowed to write books. I didn't know ahead of time that Saleh was one, but I could tell from the way the book was written...this book will hurt both your head and your back from having to carry it around.
