About the author

Hélène Cixous is a Jewish-French, Algerian-born feminist well-known as one of the founders of poststructuralist feminist theory along with Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva. She is now a professor of English Literature at University of Paris VIII and chairs the Centre de Recherches en Etudes Féminines which she founded in 1974.

She has published numerous essays, playwrights, novels, poems, and literary criticism. Her academic works concern subjects of feminism, the human body, history, death, and theatre.

I bought this so I could re-read "The Laugh of the Medusa" which is one of the most challenging and perplexing essays on either writing or feminism I've ever encountered. But I'm excited to explore more of Hélène Cixous, and this seems to be an excellent starting point. Much of her literature is hard to find in translation, and her essays have sometimes proved to be even more difficult to track down. I'm glad that someone had the bright idea to collect some of her works sooner rather than later.

read this on my computer for my thesis... a wild ride. Ecriture feminine (women's writing) is wild, lyrical, random and awesome. She is so smart. I felt at times that I was trailing behind her, like I was watching a fire dancer or a magician. Not much else to say because it was smart and dense and I have to think a lot about it for uni. French people are so funny

Habla de su relación con la escritura, de cómo durante mucho tiempo pesó en ella la idea de que sólo los hombres podían escribir, del dilema de las lenguas, del dilema de la pertenencia a un país, de ser judía, de hablar alemán, de venir de Argelia y escribir en francés, de nacionalizarse francesa, de la obligación de ser mujer, de ser lanzada a ser mujer a la fuerza, de la maternidad y del cuidar a la madre y siempre de escritura. story of the garden so good so surreal so Leonora Carrington (white eggs) . text is body, writing is life. write the self --an excess overflow deluge .

For me the unavoidable selections here are those from The Newly Born Woman ("Sorties"), Extreme Fidelity and Three Steps on the Ladder of Writing. The latter has been a formative text for my writing practice.
