Maverick Frost may be the drummer for the biggest rock band in the world; but before that he was my best friend, my first love, and the one who shattered my entire world .

Maverick changed everything between us the night he asked me to kiss him. After pushing my feelings away like a dark secret, it turned out he felt the same way. We spent that summer wrapped up in one another discovering things that I had only dreamed about. Maverick said he wanted forever with me, and then he snatched it all away. Those emerald eyes, that stark white hair. Gone before I even had a chance to say goodbye.

Six years later I'm playing hockey for the Boston Terriers, but still I took a chance reconnecting with my best friend. Only he's not the same boy I fell in love with. He's angry; hostile and constantly on edge. I see bits and pieces of the old Maverick hidden beneath the surface. I want to dig them out, put them together, fix him and make him whole again. If he only he'd let me in.

Maybe then we can have what we always dreamed about.

Sundae Leighton writes romance novels that are sweet with a dark twist. She got her start writing fanfiction with her friends in school, but didn’t take the plunge to publish her first book (Picture Perfect) until 2020. Born and raised in Connecticut, where she currently resides with her husband and their cats. She sometimes scares herself when she writes things darker than intended, considers coffee the nectar of the Gods, and once ran the NYC marathon (OK - half marathon). This a a second chance romance with a lot of emotions to unpack between Maverick and Jackson. Maverick is such a tornado of feelings and emotions, he really does stand centre stage in this with all he has to deal with mentally.
Jackson is such a sweetheart. I felt he was risking more trying again at the risk if being left again.
Sundae really gies deep into the emotions of this relationship and traumas from the pst that makes an impact on them coming together again.

Its a great addition to the series and flowed really well. It was nice to see Maverick just finally become himself and let in the love from Jackson that he craved.

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review

When I started reading Frost I expected a similar story to The Lying Tree because I think, in a very general way, the love stories of Kill & Matty and Mav & Jax have things common, BUT the latter were unexpectedly tender, sweet and heartbreakingly beautiful, their story broke and healed my heart throughout The WHOLE book and it became my favorite mm romance from Sundae Leighton.

And I can't believe I'm saying this, but I also LOVED Mavs so much!! His personal story was quite heartbreaking, and it made me very sad to read the difference between the Maverick of the past allowing himself to be happy with Jax, exploring his feelings for him, taking care of Dean and planing a life in which they would both be happy, in contrast to the insecure boy, afraid to be who he is, accept himself and show those around him that he loves them. I definitely didn't expect everything that this character made me feel, and something that broke my heart in particular was reading how much Maverick tried to protect Dean from the mistreatment of his parents and how bad their relationship is in the present, and despite everything, I loved that Sundae showed the most tender moments of these brothers' relationship, how much they care for each other, and the constant support that Dean always gives Maverick.

Jax was a character that stole my heart so quickly, he's Maverock's best friend since they were little, a professional hockey player, a very sweet, tender, understanding guy who's willing to do anything to have Mavs back in his life. Something that I really liked about Jax's story was knowing that he has always had a little crush on Maverick, and although things are never easy between them, his feelings for his best friend are always present. Plus, I loved seeing him as a professional player, hisrelationship with his teammates and knowing a little more about his life in the six years he spent away from Mav.

The love story between Maverick & Jackson is one of my favorites written by this author, and also one of the most complex. I really liked the way in which Sundae alternated the chapters between the past and the present of this couple, how she dealt with Maverick's mental health problems, always showing how difficult is to go through this process and ask for help. Without a doubt, what I loved the most about Mavs & Jax was how sweet, tender, adorable and strong their love for each other is, the way in which Jax always knows how to give Maverick what he needs, even when it's not what he wants, and although the journey these two have is a trully roller coaster, I also think that, in its own way, it's a bit more light story that made me very happy to read.

"I loved him. I loved my best friend, and he loved me. That was all that mattered."

Frost is the second book in the 'With the Band' series by Sundae Leighton and this is Maverick and Jackson's story. Mav is now the drummer in a successful rockband, Mulligan Downtown, and Jax is the goalie for a successful NHL team.

We first meet Maverick and Jackson in The Lying Tree (Matthias and Killian's story), in the early days of the band, whilst the boys were still at school, and then we had some interaction during Mav's decline into depression following his separation from Jax. Whilst Frost can be read as a standalone, I do recommend that you read The Lying Tree first, for continuity. I loved the nod to characters in Amnesia too!

Frost is a heart-wrenching, angsty MM best friends-to-lovers-to nothing-to lovers romance, with lots of miscommunication, parental homophobia, betrayal and internalised anxiety. Whilst the band is central to the story, the action actually takes place during down time from the band and focuses on the boys' relationship, as they try to rebuild and reconnect.

"Because I would burn down the world for Maverick Frost. All he had to do was ask."

We do ultimately get a hard won HEA for Mavs and Jax, who are such beautiful soulmates despite their troubled journey to happiness, and as an added bonus - the steam level is high!🔥

Loved it all.

This is my first Sundae Leighton book and definitely will not be my last.

Things to look for in this book:

MM romance ✔️
Best friends to strangers to lovers ✔️
Childhood loves ✔️
First love ✔️
Rockstar romance ✔️
Childhood trauma ✔️
Mental health rep ✔️
Demi-sexual rep ✔️

Maverick and his brother Dean grew up in a terrible household with awful parents. The only thing that he had going for him in his life was his band (who included his brother Dean and his two friends Blake and Killian) and his best friend Jackson. They were his two outlets outside of his house.

The summer after HS graduation Jackson and Maverick crossed that line from friends to lovers and finally admitted their feelings out loud. But that all ended abruptly when Mav was forced to make a decision.

Now here we are years later and Jackson is a professional hockey player in the NHL and Maverick is the drummer in his world famous band. And they are seeing each other for the first time in over 6 years. Things haven’t changed for either of them in their own heads, but will they be able to express their feelings and most on from the hurt that happened in the past? Or will the past forever haunt them and not allow them to move forward with a relationship?

I loved each of those characters equally and for their own reasons. Jackson was a fantastic, lovable, accepting MMC. After all of the heartbreak that Mav caused him, he is still utterly and completely in love with his person (Mav, obvs).

Mav’s current predicament broke my heart. You could tell how deeply he was affected by decisions made years ago and all I wanted to do was hug and squeeze him so hard. That man needs all the love he can get.

Highly recommend for anyone looking for an angsty MM celebrity romance!

"𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙."

Frost is a second chance romance - a love story of two friends, Maverick and Jackson. Six years ago, these two best friends spent a summer falling in love and making plans for their future together. Until they were ripped apart and everything they'd planned, destroyed.

Now they are back in each others lives and Jackson is hoping they can be friends - maybe even more - again. But Maverick lost so much of himself when that summer ended. He's a different person now. Shutting out the world, pushing people who love him away. Consumed by anger and regret over the choices he made.

I adored Jackson and how hard he fought for them. He loved Maverick so much and he was such a strong, comforting force in Mav's life.

My heart ached for Maverick. Because of the way he was raised, he's afraid to admit to the world how he feels about Jax. But he wants to, so so badly. There's this constant pull between what he wants to do and this fear of doing it.

I loved the whole storyline. The way it switched between events six years prior and the present. It was as though we were on a journey with these two - from their summer together, to their split, their reunion and everything that came after. We also get a look at some of the other couples and how they too play a part in Mav's life and in his acceptance of himself.

If you love the hurt/comfort trope (like me!) I recommend adding this one to your list. Be sure to read The Lying Tree first (another fantastic hurt/comfort story).

Sundae Leighton has done it again with an angsty book with all of the hurt/comfort and another broken boy! Not to mention it combined my favorite sport and a rock band with a broody drummer! Perfection! And i LOVE the Top Gun reference!!

Maverick is the drummer for Mulligan Downtown and for the last 6 years he has been slowly drowning. Memories of his best friend and their love that was cut short plague his throughts.

Jackson is an NHL goalie and after walking away from his best friend 6 years ago, he finally decided to contact him. He shows up at the bands last concert and is taken aback by Mavs' demeanor, but his love for him has Jackson inviting Maverick to his apartment. Even though Maverick is very shy and lacking confidence, complete opposite of how Jax remembered him, he quickly falls back into Jackson's arms.

My heart hurt for Maverick and what his parents did to him. He went through so much and because of his pain he pushed eveyone he cared for away. This book explains his behavior from before and shows how his pain caused him to react so harshly. He deserves ALL the hugs and love!

You can read this book w/o reading the previous 2 however there are spoilers throughout and it is highly recommended to read them first. With that being said, this is my favorite so far!

The story line was good and I like the characters, but the writing is just awful. There were at least 5 grammatical errors on every page. Extra words in a sentence, words missing from a sentence and misspelled words. Like shit, how hard is it to reread what you just wrote and fix it? Get a fucking editor! Shit! There are even chunks of conversation missing where you’re all like “what the fuck is happening right now?” There was this one part where Maverick said “call me that again” and Jackson said “sweetheart”. But in the previous conversational piece, “sweetheart” was never mentioned.

Then Maverick literally leaves Jackson. Goes to Matthias and Killian to have them help him get Jackson back. Like, why the fuck did you leave him in the first place? Like it felt in that moment that a huge chunk was missing from the story. If he would have just stayed he wouldn’t need help getting him back. However, like a few pages later it made it sound like Maverick left while Jackson was at his away games. But in the actual plot, Maverick was still there when Jackson got back, fucked him, then left for Killian’s house! So make it make sense!

The writing is just all over the place. This is the third book I’ve read from this author and they are all like this. You would think she would learn by now to write a proper sentence, but apparently not!

This book had all the angsty goodness! I’ve been interested in Maverick’s story since I read the Lying Tree. I adored Maverick and Jackson. This book absolutely delivered!

Maverick and Jackson were childhood best friends, who fell in love. A betrayal separates them and they don’t see each other for six years. In the present, Maverick is a drummer for a famous band and Jackson is a professional hockey player. The book has dual timelines. We travel between the present and past, so we can see how they arrived to where they are now and how they can find their way to a HEA. It is not an easy journey.

My heart hurt for Maverick so much. He went through it so much and I really just wanted him to be happy. He is the epitome of the saying “hurt people hurt people” especially from his behavior in the Lying Tree. In this book, we find out more about his background and how he became the person he is today. He deserves all the hugs. Jackson was so sweet, funny, and patient. I loved their love so much.

The author teased a few potential couples at the end of this book, and I can’t wait to see what she releases next!

Frost follows the story of Maverick and Jackson on their journey of ups and down to find their way back to each other.

Jax and Mavs have been best friends for forever and grew up inseparable, but the summer before Jax is going to leave for college Maverick admits he sees Jackson a different way and wants to try being together. That’s all Jackson has ever wanted because he’s been in love with Mavs this whole time.
Maverick had a traumatic childhood and terrible abusive parents who instilled a deep sense of hatred for everything outside of the heteronormative way of thinking.

When they’re discovered it changes everything. Mavs can’t escape his childhood conditioning and pushes Jax from his life completely.

Fast forward 6 years later and Maverick is miserable, mean and bitter and has pushed everyone he loves away because of his deep self hatred. But when him and Jax are reunited they both can’t stop the feelings that never really went away.

Jax and so freaking sweet and is always there for Mav in whatever way he needs, but Maverick has a lot of trauma to unpack and is so hot and cold.
Their love is beautiful though and so sweet and passionate. I really loved them as a couple.

Overall I loved this book and loved the presence of side characters from previous books!

Yet another fantastic book by Sundae. This one focuses on Maverick frost and Jackson Olson. If you read the lying tree, you'll remember that Maverick is the drummer for mulligan downtown. He's been in love with his best friend for years, but because of a crappy home life and horrible parents, he's been afraid of coming out and letting anyone know. It's told in past and present parts and you get the full story of what happened between them all those years ago and the progress that Maverick goes through to finally become the man he needed to be. Their love story is painful and heartbreaking, but absolutely beautiful in its own right. I loved the demisexual representation, being demi myself it was nice to finally see myself represented and the mental health aspects were done very well. This book was so incredible and the spice was fantastic. Highly recommend.

This was another really great read by this author, and I loved the way it intersected with Amnesia and Lying Tree. This one focuses on Maverick Frost, the drummer for Mulligan Downtown, and his childhood best friend Jackson, who is now a hockey player for Boston. I loved that this exposed so much of Maverick’s past and how his parents’ homophobia shaped his character and his relationships, driving a wedge between him and the world really. Now that he has a chance to reconnect with Jackson, he takes it with reservation. Jackson really is the most forgiving person on the planet though, helping him work through a lot of the emotional trauma on their way to a HEA. These two are great together, and the cameos from the bandmates and Holt and Watson made the worlds fit together seamlessly. I can’t wait for more Mulligan stories after what has been teased…

Oh how my heart hurt for Maverick and what his parents put him through making him think loving Jackson was wrong , having a Bi son I cannot comprehend how any parents put their child through this . The story was emotional and I was rooting for Mav’s & Jax and hoping Maverick would let is heart led his head for once and with the help of Killian , Matthias and his brother Dean things started to get clearer for Maverick . It was great hearing for Holt & Watson again and I’m looking forward to Blake & Tom and Dean & Beaus stories.

WOW! This was definitely an angsty, emotional and heartbreaking story that had my emotions all twisted up inside. Maverick and Jackson take us on a journey of second chances, forgiveness, healing and finding love.

Maverick and Jackson have a connection that was forged when they were younger, but circumstances and life got in the way, pulling them apart. Now they have a chance to reconnect and to see if their friendship will turn into something more. Their chemistry oozed off the pages and I couldn’t wait for them to take the next step in their relationship.

Fantastic story filled with so much emotion it just pours off the pages. I just loved everything about this story and look forward to the next one.

This is a first read for this author. This is a very emotional and heartfelt read that has you feeling the emotions from these two amazing men. Maverick frost is a drummer for a band and Jackson Olson is the hockey player. These boys had a friendship that turned into love but Mavericks parents wouldn’t let it happen and abused him. These boys were very close tell one day it shattered and they went their own ways and Maverick became a cool heart man. Tell Jackson wants to meet up after their concert and Jackson wanted to get their friend ship back. This is their journey.

Mav and Jax are so swoon worthy. Maverick had a rough go at childhood and not being able to be himself in all facets bc of his parents. Jax on the other hand had the opposite upbringing, with loving parents and a supportive household.

Their childhoods molded who they were, and how they loved. Their story shows how through all those obstacles both in their childhoods and part of their adulthood that love truly does win.

I really loved their story and loved the hard parts that got em there. It was such a beautiful story. Killian and Matty have some competition as my favorite Sundae couple!😂

2.5 stars rounded up. Does this book desperately need a grammar and mechanics check? Yes. Are the characters completely over the top and histrionic? Yes. Was there too much poorly written sex? Yes. Was it at least 50 pages too long? Also yes.

Despite these deficits, I kept turning the pages of this trashy, smutty, yet still entertaining book. There was something to the characters and story that kept me involved. I’d love to see the author hone her craft because I think there’s something there. She just hasn’t quite found it yet.

This book got me. I’ll admit it; I cried! There is so much emotion, pain, heartache, angst, love, comfort, and healing packed into these pages. It’s beautiful!!! Jackson and Maverick will live in my heart and mind forever.

Maverick and Jackson have an incredible, everlasting love. They are soulmates in the truest form. Their story isn’t easy but it’s 110% worth it. Everything that happened shaped them into the people they are now. This book features both their current and prior relationship. This definitely amplified the emotions.

I highly, highly recommend reading The Lying Tree first to avoid any spoilers. You’ll see characters from that book in this one. The relationships between the main and supporting characters only adds to this book.

Maverick didn’t have the easy life at home and his outlet was his band and his friendship with Jackson. But things change for Maverick and Jackson when they crossed the line. They had an amazing summer until Mav was forced to turn away from Jackson leave both heartbroken. Now years later they see each other but the questions are will they be able to their past in the past and move on or will they finally admit to what is in their heart.

Ok I really hated Maverick while reading The Lying Tree but he has completely redeemed himself and won me over. And OMG, Jax is awesome!! I adore him and his family so much. If I could go to Canfield I’d hug them all before being locked up after busting the Frost house, yeah I’m that mad. I really hope we get to see more of all these characters especially Dean & Beau (and Helena lol) and Blake & Tommy. Loving this series SO much!! 🖤🔥🥁🔥🖤

Adore Frost and his beau Jax!

The emotional turmoil these two experienced thanks to such horrible parenting, had tears in my eyes as I read through this one. But Jax never gave up on Frost. He was the hero of this story that helped Frost find his way out of the darkness and fight away his demons. Such a beautiful story! And just love these band boys and their NASCAR friends. Love the cameos!

Frost

Maverick and Jackson

Well that was just a lot to learn about Maverick and why he behaved the way he did in book one. Cuz holy crap was he just a terrible person in that one. I didn't think any redemption would happen for that. Glad to see all the guys getting their happiness back.

Sundae Leighton is fast becoming one of my auto-buy authors and it's no wonder when she writes amazing books like this one! This was a crazy rollercoaster of emotions and torment and my heart hurt for these two. A second chance story, it deals with the most beautiful characters being hurt by the people who should care the most for them, and what Maverick's parents did absolutely broke my heart. I loved how the previous books characters were there to help him heal and realise that he is so worthy of love! Jackson is the best for Mav, helping his work through the trauma and my soul sung for them as they truly deserve it all. Told from the present and past, the author develops their story wonderfully, the pacing wasn't too fast or slow, and allowed me to really get to know the characters and story as if I was there. Overall another beautiful story from an amazing author and I cannot wait for what comes next!
