Deer hunting has often been termed difficult, humbling, and ceremonial. This is because to do it correctly, a hunter has so much to learn-including learning about mule deer habitats, and how deer use those habitats at different times of the year, and under diverse conditions. Found within the pages of The Complete Guide to Mule Deer Hunting is a wealth of solid, useful information on hunting tactics, as well as mule deer habits and habitats from which the reader will greatly benefit on his next trip to the West. Like the soft-heeled step of a still-hunter Sam Curtis writes with a fine balance between an instructional how-to voice and light-hearted humor. With detailed photography and step-by-step illustrations, as well as comprehensive practical advice and encouragement throughout, this book will remain a classic reference on the subject for years to come.
A pretty well-organized and helpful book - just enough story telling to keep it interesting while most of the book is full of tips and information. I learned a ton about mule deer habits, where to find them, what the seasons and weather do, etc. Pretty light on side techniques (like how to process deer or pack for a trip) - most of it is about finding deer.
Awesome hunting stories about why some people hunt and its not for food and sometimes its nice to be out in the wilderness with elk, deer, trees, and squirrels. Its a fun place to hunt and have fun.
I'm a novice hunter, my goal is to put in for the draw next year for a mule deer hunt. To that end I've been trying to study up as much as possible about how to hunt them. Lacking any direct experience I cannot say if the author is correct or not for his advice. That said, this book is easy to read, the author combines his personal hunting stories with field observations from other hunters and biologists to provide a engaging inquiry of mule deer behaviors in their habitats. He covers a lot of ground, figuratively and literally. If there's a mule deer population in a geographic location from the Western States of Idaho and Utah across the Great Plains to the forests and foothills of Montana, he's hunted them. The theme running throughout is basic: know the land, know the mule deer, know the season and know how the mule deer bucks interact with the two.
Easy 3 stars, maybe 4 if I can try out his recommendations successfully.
