As the fiery wall of Abraham dies away, the people of Second Eden wait for the coming war. Giants and dragons will soon break through the barrier and attack, powered by the hatred they have stored up for four years. Although they have prepared for the onslaught, a spy has come among them, one who learns their weaknesses. Meanwhile, Bonnie, Shiloh, and Sapphira leave their protective hideout deep in the heart of Hades. Equipped with a new secret weapon, they are now ready to join Billy, Walter, Ashley and the others in second Eden to help them and the good dragons fight the invading army. As the battle rages, a new helper arises, the only one who knows how to use Bonnie's secret weapon, but the spy is ready to destroy him the moment he arrives. And with Devin the dragon slayer in their midst, proving that more evil forces have descended upon their world, the people of New Eden don't know whom to trust.

This book. It’s one of my favorites EVER. I don’t know how to begin reviewing it, so let’s go with the old likes/dislikes.
WHAT I LIKED:
-How about EVERYTHING. -Pretty much all the DIOM characters return and form an epic army. -Abaddon’s alliteration. -The Maid’s uplifting speech. -Semiramis adds the perfect tension every time she’s around. -Everything is intense and so many people get hurt! The stakes are especially high in this one. -Beautiful, brilliant themes of sacrificial love have been a huge part of the past seven books, but they are even more powerful in The Bones of Makaidos. -The 4-year jump from part 1 to part 2 surprised me the first time I read it, but this time I couldn’t wait! I mean, the characters aged up to be my peers again, so that’s pretty cool. -Billy and Bonnie. Walter and Ashley. Sapphira and Elam. <333 -The ending is incredibly satisfying and it made me tear up, even on a reread! -I’m missing so much, but 674 pages are hard to review all at once. XD
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
-I can’t think of anything worth mentioning. One or two lines were a bit different than my personal beliefs, but they didn’t detract from my enjoyment or the encouragement this book is to me.
IN OTHER WORDS...
I adore this story. If forced to pick a favorite book out of all 12 in this story world, I think this would be it! It’s still one of the very best series conclusions I’ve ever read, bringing all the characters and plot threads to a graceful and moving finale. (And I’ll get to return to these people a generation later in Children of the Bard!)
This is my favorite book ever! That is saying a lot for me 'cause I love books I can read 400 paged books in one day. If i had to read one book only for the rest of my life, it would be this one.
In case you happened to stumble on this book by accident and are impressed by its ridiculously good reviews, I just want you to know: the only reason that the numbers are so good is because if someone actually got this far into this godforsaken series, they're deranged and would probably kill someone for Bryan Davis, and he probably thinks that's pretty nifty.
No other sane person gets this far on purpose. Because these are bad books. I know because I have read them, and Davis is a bad writer. The end.
Review 2010: The Bones of Makaidos may be my favorite book of all time. It is full of epic battles, a touching romance, fiery trials, and the answer to the questions of many: What is an Oracle of Fire? The beautiful wedding reveals the benefits of purity, as the virgin bride and child of doubt come before the alter to join hands in marriage. Friends separated by time, distance, and even different dimensions are reunited. It offered a magnificent conclusion, with a “Happily Ever After” feel, yet emitted a bit of mystery, leaving room for a few more adventures. I was in tears by the end of the book, missing those characters who sacrificed their life along the journey of eight books, and so entirely happen for those characters who had kept the faith despite the trials and struggles they went through. Bryan Davis has created a wonderful, amazing, and all around beautiful story. He has helped me learn to become an Oracle of Fire. I highly recommend you continue the adventure of our beloved characters in this spectacular book.
The Bones of Makaidos won the 2010 Clive Staples Award for Christian Speculative Fiction, and it definitely deserves the hype! This fast-paced conclusion to the Oracles of Fire series is quite honestly my favorite of Bryan Davis’s books. It’s masterfully written, and the pages flew by at a breakneck pace! I couldn’t wait to find out what happens! It’s been amazing to journey with these characters through their trials and adventures, and this book brings those adventures to a stunning, exciting, and inspiring conclusion. I’m not ashamed to say that the ending brought me to tears! This book alone makes reading the Dragons In Our Midst and Oracles of Fire series well worthwhile.
"Bones of Makaidos" is the final book in the Oracles of Fire series. The book picks up with the most of the main characters in second Eden. The rest are in the earth where Sapphira and Elam grew up. In second Eden Billy and Walter have been going on missions to take out potential threats while the people of second Eden prepare for war. While on a mission Walter is critically injured scaring everybody but he eventually survives. Bonny is captured by Devin despite of the Shiloh being a hoax to protect Bonny. The great battle occurs and Bonny attempts to kill Devin but cant because he is secretly protected. Goliath the dragon who was possessed by the spirits of the evil nephilim lead is forces against the people of second Eden but they lost. After the loss with the help of the other dragons Goliath saw all the evil he did and took back control of his body and sacrificed himself to save his father.
I was very surprised by the end but happy to know that Goliath wasn't just pure evil. Like usual the book had a great story line and good action. The thing that made this book special is that things happened that i didn't expect at all. This is argue-ably my favorite book written by Bryan Davis. I decided to make this one of my challenging books because it was 2 books in one. The book was a very long read and hard to do so in a month.
Like the other books this book is a great Friday night read. It is best to read right before a nap because then you can picture the book in your head to make it even better. I highly recommend the book it is one of the best so far. It is a long read but I encourage the reader to persevere and keep reading it will be worth it.
Wow. It was the most beautiful ending to any series I have ever read in my life. It seemed completed, like every loose end was tied up. It was incredibly satisfying. The characters felt real during this book. They felt more alive than ever before, and had real emotions. I cried throughout the whole book. It was truly amazing. I also loved how much more mature this book seemed compared to the others. It seemed so much stronger, and I was left completely happy. It's possibly the best book I've ever read in my whole life. It's worth reading the 'Dragons In Our Midst' and 'Oracles Of Fire' series to get here. It just left me awestruck.
This is an amazing book! The plot was excellent, it makes you come alive with the characters! I read this book in like 2 days it was so good! You wont be disappointed by reading this book! EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT ending! It's kinda sad because you know it's going to end, but you also feel happy at the same time because of the ending. :) Thanks Mr. Davis for making me learn to love reading!
I was really surprised at the end and this was a great series. All 8 books were very well written and I enjoyed them. It was ReAlLy confusing. I lost track of how many characters there were and more kept coming and it got really confusing but SO good! I recommend these books. They’re Christian books and very good. Also the cover should be different....but yay.
This book was unlike all others that I have ever read! Throughout the series you see the characters ups and downs and upheavals in life and then you see them come together here and it's just amazing and Brian Davis has really outdone himself.
This is a fantastic finale to this series. It brings together so many storyline's together in how Avengers Endgame should have been. Brings together so many biblical themes and ideas together in big fantasy/sci fi setting. Amazing
4.5/5. I'm definitely torn on how to rate this. There are some of my favorite parts in the whole series, especially in the first half. But some of the last third is really derivative of other volumes. It's still a fitting end to a great series.
The ending, even though there were moments that were predictable, was still enjoyable and it did not dissapoint! So I would recomend this to enyone who's a dragon lover!
2022 Series Review: When I first read the Dragons in Our Midst series not long after this book released, it quickly hit my favorites list. The Oracles of Fire series took me a little longer to win me over, but eventually, it joined its predecessor on my top ten (technically sharing a space, as you really can't have one without the other). But time went on, and my growing reading list meant I reread less, and before long, years had passed without my touching these books (except to occasionally take Bookstagram photos). And the question arose: were they as good as I remembered? Other favorites from that time had fallen in favor as I found other stories that I loved more and that rang more true and as I discovered other authors with lovelier writing. Would Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire hold up?
In October 2021, I decided to find out. And as I delved into the familiar pages, I quickly found myself falling in love again with the story, characters, and themes, all of which were as excellent as I remembered — or, in some cases, better. Maturity on my part meant I could better appreciate certain characters and choices that had frustrated the younger me and that I could more clearly see the spiritual truths Davis weaves into every page of his writing. And books I originally didn't love — mostly Tears of a Dragon, Enoch's Ghost, and The Bones of Makaidos — I found I liked much better this time around because, again, I could better appreciate the themes, particularly the theme of sacrifice that runs so strongly through this series.
It's bit interesting for me to think that in some ways, these books were published at the last possible moment that they could've been really successful, both in- and out-of-story. In-story, the increasing omnipresence of the internet and surveillance and just the increased number of people with cameras on their phones would've made it nearly impossible for the dragons and anthrozils to stay hidden (especially in the case of LITERAL dragons or Bonnie and her wings) — and that's not even starting on the events at the end of Circles of Seven or the merging of Earth and Hell in Oracles of Fire. Those were a Big Deal in the story; they'd be receiving hundreds of times more attention and panic today.
And out-of-story, well, you can't get far into these books without recognizing that Davis isn't exactly subtle with his spiritual themes. Even compared to other books of the time, these books are saturated with Biblical truth, scripture, allegory, and messages — I would argue even more so than some books that were explicitly allegorical. It's even more evident compared to a lot of Christian fiction today, which tends to be much more subtle. But honestly? It's kind of refreshing to read a book that's so in-your-face about these things.
So, do these books hold up? Absolutely. If you've never read them before, pick them up. And if you have read them before, well, don't you think it might be time for a reread?
~~~~~ I appreciate this book more every time I read it. Davis is truly a master, creating an epic tale of the battle between good and evil that, despite its incredible scope, still manages to touch me on a very personal level. The characters, story, and ever-rising stakes keep me turning the pages (even when I ought to be sleeping or doing schoolwork), and the beautifully presented spiritual truths inspire my soul.
4/3/25 review I REALLY wanted to like this book but it took me so long to read, almost four months, and for some reason nothing compelled me to finish it for the longest time.😔
My praise about the book: 🤍The ending chapter was sweet 🤍Elam...literally the only character I stayed in love with till the end
My dislikes: ❌It felt too...weird. I don't know. The clash between Satan and dragons and believing in Jesus and combining heaven and hell and airplanes...it just didn't work. ❌Very long and slow, and defiantly could have used more twists, or cliff hangers, or something ❌Why...oh why did he have to keep mentioning LITERALLY everyone's biceps!!!😖😖😖😖
Bryan Davis' The Bones of Makaidos is a compelling novel that drags the reader into the story and gives them new renditions of the ways people should act and feel.
A theme in this book is that waiting is not to be despised, but to be loved for the challenges that it presents. The author gives perspectives of many of the main characters. You see from the eyes of the good and the evil characters. He gives you just enough information to force you to long to read the next page, and then the one after, and so on, and so on. The characters are realistic because they each have their own struggles that are independent of the struggles of others. Additionally, they do not have parts of them seem the same in every other character. An example of this is how one character is always cracking jokes, even when in danger, and when compared to a different character, who is stoic and unimaginative, they have very little in common. Due to the variety of character types, this book is much more enjoyable than other book that I have read. The setting is easily believable and has lots of detail when it is introduced. When reading this book you could close your eyes and see yourself in the place that you were just reading about. In this book, some of the main characters are preparing for a war with the evils that threaten all five of the dimensions. The main characters fight the advanced scouts of the enemy when attempting missions and some of the bravest and most innocent of them are almost killed. The final help for the defenders get stuck in a secret sixth dimension and train there while waiting for many years to join for the war. The enemy army finally is released and they fight. The rest would be spoilers. This book compares to no other book in it's level of suspense, in my opinion.
This great book is from those that enjoy suspense and the fights between good and evil. I would rate it a five of five and I encourage you to read it.
The climax of the eight book series and sequel series. I don't know what to say about the plot actually. It was fast-paced as usual. Exciting and original. But those are just adjectives. It certainly was a great way to end the series, though. After reading it I simply can't put my reactions to word. there is only one thing I remember having trouble with in this book. At the half-way point in the book you really have to force yourself through. It is just really dry. The first two chapters in the second book are like this. I would explain more of why it's dry and describe it in more depth, but that would spoil some of the plot, and wouldn't want that now would we?
I learned more about the characters and understood them on a deeper level than in any of Mr. Davis's past novels. When I heard one character went missing in battle my heart pounded. When I found out one character was mortally wounded I put the book down and literally blanked out for a moment or two. I had no choice but to care. Go ahead and hate me for it, but strangely enough, with my fascination of swords and war and fantasy in general, I'm a sap for romance novels mind you, but novels with romance. When proportioned right and well done I think they make a great addition to a novel. This book has great balance. Just the right amount for me. I love the finale in this book, but I will keep my mouth shut about it.
As I said in the Plot section, there was a period that was lacking the usual engaging writing. I had trouble getting through those two chapters, but afterward the story takes a jumpstart that is even more exciting than before. Other then this I had no problems with the book writing wise. Not anything that stuck out at me, anyways.
This book was one of the most emotionally and spiritually gripping and powerful books I've read.
This book is literally one that I did not want to put down. Being in college, it was so hard to set it aside and do my homework, but once all my other obligations were taken care of, I picked this book up and just devoured it with my mind.
At first, I was not sure if I liked how there were so many characters to follow, so many story-lines, but in the end, Mr. Davis reveals how powerful a story he created. You get caught up in the lives of these fictional characters. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to shout to them warnings, I wanted to help them, my body tensed as I read of their struggles. I felt as if I was in the story.
This book ends so satisfactorily the stories of Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire. The only loose ties are new ones that he barely developed, enough to arouse curiosity but not so much as to make his readers writhe until the next book.
Bryan Davis is a truly gifted author that is not afraid to speak of his faith through his writings, and for this I am grateful. I have learned so much in reading these books, and they inspire me to pull out my dusty Bible and delve into its pages, looking for those deeper truths.
These books, Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire, are a delight to read, full of richness that feeds the spirit, and I recommend them very highly.
I’ve read a lot and loved this 12 book series. The expectations on the finale was high. This book is the most effective and satisfying endings to a book series I have ever read. Somehow Bryan Davis ties together a ridiculous amount of plot threads and characters perfectly. The ending is so beautiful and intense. It also taught me the word loquacious in my favorite joke in the series.
I started this book confident that I would love it. I couldn't see why I wouldn't--it was about two and a half inches thick, and was the conclusion of the series, so I was sure that it would be epically amazing. Well, it certainly was an epic, but not in the amazing way. I was seriously disappointed. I hoped that everything that I hadn't really understood in the past books would make sense in this one. No such luck. The storytelling was fine, as usual, but it just went on and on and on. Before long, I was looking at pages blankly, automatically flipping pages and to the outward appearance, reading with an intrigued expression. Actually, I wasn't taking any of the words in and was thinking about what we might have for lunch. All the characters were a disappointment, sadly. All the girls were coy, and the guys were chivalrous, and I don't have anything against chivalrous and being ladylike, but sometimes it was just... very tiring. I don't know why I did, but I kept at it until I reached the end. I found the end a bit predictable. =S The main complaint I have for this book was for how slow the plot moved. That, I discovered, was why the book is so thick. Davis describes every single thing that happens to them, excepting the four years that he skipped out of the blue.
The Bones of Makaidos is a stunning epic, and my favorite of all the books. Are Heroes have been training for four long years to meet the enemies army that seeks to destroy Second Eden. Are heroes have all grown up faster in Second Eden, and Bonnie and Sapphira find themselves in a realm that they never knew existed, the lowest realm of all The Valley of Souls, where these souls await resurrection to life, and the only way to get out alive is to be consumed by fire. Sapphira and Bonnie under go training themselves to be able to fight in Second Eden. But what everyone doesn't know is that the army that's coming isn't coming just to attack Second Eden, but Heaven it's self. A must read adrenalin pumping epic. A read of sacrifice, love, romance, forgiveness, and a passion and obedience to do whatever is asked of them even if it means death. A must read story in a must read series, that never disappoints no matter how many times you read it, an epic stunning conclusion to the Oracles of Fire series. What you thought was the end of our heroes was only the beginning. There's third new and exciting series called Children of the Bard you can find book 1 Song of the Ovulum, and be reunited with Billy and Bonnie and meet there children in a new epic.
The Bones of Makaidos (by Bryan Davis) is a fantasy-christian novel from the series of Oracles of Fire. The book is about Billy Bannister, Bonnie Silver, Ashley Stalworth, Walter Foley, and Sapphira Adi; five young adults who's mission is to save Second Eden, a peaceful uncorrupted world in a different dimension. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good chase, and all the events leading to one epic finale in the ending. However, I would suggest reading the rest of the series first. Also read the series that links to that one called, "Dragons in Our Midst." Or else, you'll probably be left feeling lost and overwhelmed.
The best thing about this book is that each of the characters face their own personal challenges. Each of them struggle with the upending apocalypse that is fast approaching to the very door step of Heaven's gate itself. As each of them struggle, the offspring of the dragons;Billy and Bonnie, embrace their dragon traits and go to war as one against the evil dragon Arramos. I don't have one thing to say bad about this fantastic book. It would take far too long to explain in full fledged detail just how amazing, heartwarming, and inspiring this is. I had my eyes glued to the book the whole time.
