LeAnn Campbell uses the book of Proverbs as a guidebook for writers. Every chapter has one or more nuggets of wisdom to motivate writers. There is guidance for perfecting your craft, choosing words carefully, and handling criticism. Listening to instruction, dealing with rejections, and working diligently instead of acting like a lazy sluggard—Proverbs covers it all. Proverbs 19:2 (NIV) could be a motto for writers: It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.
Writers’ Devotions to Go covers all this and many more situations that writers face. It includes web sites for contacting writers’ organizations, suggestions for writers who want to establish local groups, guidelines for critique groups, and web sites to determine whether information you get over the Internet is the truth or a hoax.
I don't claim to be a writer, per say, but I do have a keen interest in it and write poetry. I would like to tell my own story one day though, and that propels me. I figured a book such as this one would give me some extra tips or tools, as well as connecting it to my Christian beliefs. Which it did. While I enjoyed reading the stories, I felt I learned the most from each writing assignment. They were at the end of each devotional. This is where I learned what style of writing I have and ways to improve it. It was very beneficial for an amateur like myself. More experienced writers may feel differently, but I think it's a useful book for any writer.
I read about a third of the devotionals, thinking that it would get better as it would go on, however, this book was not what I was expecting.
Pros: 1. There some helpful tips and some good writing exercises for especially beginning writers. 2. There are some nice verses at the beginning and prayers at the end of each chapter
Cons: 1. The devotions read more like blog posts on writing than truly a devotional. 2. Faith did not seem to be at the center on the devotions, only tacked on.
Overall, if you need some encouragement from a veteran writer, you might enjoy this. However, don't expect really deep devotional time.
