After escaping her fourth kidnapping attempt in a year, Zenobia Fox has learned to vigilantly guard her identity. While her brother Archimedes is notorious for his exploits, Zenobia has had no adventures to call her own-besides the stories she writes. Book info: I am the author of the Iron Seas steampunk romance series. I've written a guide to the world (including a map) on my website.

I also write a paranormal romance series, the Guardians. That series guide is also on my website, including a "The Story So Far" feature, which allows you to catch up on all of the books that previously released in the series if you start after the first installment.

Goodreads info: I am slowly, slowly adding to my shelves and reviews. It's unlikely that I will join many book discussions (especially of my own work) simply because I don't want to stifle reader conversation.

Bio: Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.

Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

Stunning book. Was a little lengthy and the relationship tropes a little repetitive but over all I really loved it.

Maybe you aren’t familiar with steampunk. Maybe you don’t love it. Maybe you haven’t read the earlier installments in the Iron Seas series. Maybe you’ve never even heard of Meljean Brook. It. Does. Not. Matter. You need to buy this book now and read it. You need to get swept up in the adventure. You need to swoon over the romance. And then you can join the rest of us who can do nothing but gush over just how wonderful this story is.

I read all 8 parts as one continuous story because I have read serials before and I know the format does not work for me. But don’t let that discourage you, if you want to check out Part 1, just to see if it’s right for you, I think it will give you enough of a taste to decide whether to go forward. Honestly, I was hooked before I turned the page to start Part 2 and it only got better as I continued to read. You don’t need to have read the previous books in the series, although there are references to prior events. This stands alone just fine –and it may even inspire you to go back and read the earlier installments.

The story follows Zenobia Fox, a woman who has spent her adult life writing stories based on her brother’s wild adventures. She loves what she does and she adores her brother, but his exploits have put her in danger countless times. Usually, she is kidnapped and held for ransom, so bad men can exploit her brother’s success. Now, she travels with bodyguards to keep her safe. Only, not even they can stop a group of marauders from targeting their airship. Fortunately, Zenobia’s quick thinking and theirs allows them to survive and escape into the protection of a nearby ship.

That ship belongs to the Kraken King… or at least that is name that follows his reputation. Members of the town that he founded call him Governor. His friends and family call him Ariq. His number one priority is protecting Krakentown from the marauders who have been targeting airships all around his territory. He has no plans for his attraction to the sharp and fascinating Zenobia to interfere with that. But that doesn’t mean he can’t try to find a way to get her in bed and protect the town at the same time.

I don’t want to spoil the particulars, but I’ll tell you that the story is sweeping. It takes the characters to new lands. They face enemies on many fronts and there is danger in every leg of their journey. The pacing is fantastic, with each designed part of the serial like a tv show episode, while the entire book is the equivalent of an entire season. That means no part is boring. Every page I read made me want to read the next page and then the next.

The world building is spectacular. It’s not like anything I have ever read –and I read a lot. But the true stars of the stories are the characters. They are so rich and three dimensional. I felt like I knew them. I cared about them. I understood what motivated them. From our core couple, to the secondary characters, they all mattered. From the very beginning, I cared about both Ariq and Zenobia and that only grew with each passing chapter. Both evolve so much over the course of the story with all they must overcome –and even more profoundly, as they grow to love one another.

The romance is utterly swoon-worthy. I loved how he loved her. It was so pure and true. I loved watching him break down her walls and earn a place in her heart. And I loved the complete devotion she ends up showing him in return. And the sex is sooo hot. Basically perfect.

I can’t think of a single thing I didn’t love about this book. It’s one of the best I have read this year. Go buy it and find a comfortable chair. You won’t want to put it down.

An interesting and action-packed story in the Iron Seas universe! :)

I loved the relationship between Ariq e Zenobia! The issue of trust was explain in length! Almost too much, but I loved it!

What I didn't like so much was the communications problem they had. If they took time to explain some of their action they would have solved many things that created some rather big problems.

Otherwise, very nice!

10 AMAZING STARS!!!!!

“Because you have a light in your face and a fire in your eyes, and the first time I looked into them, I knew it would be you. The woman I would want forever. The woman I need at my side. The woman I would love.”

Zenobia Fox is the author of her brother, Archimedes Fox’s, famous adventures. She dreams of having adventures of her own, but the only ones she does experience, other than her writing, is the kidnapping attempts she has to endure because of the brother’s wealth. But then while accompanying her friend on a trip to the Red City, their ship is ambushed, and during their escape she is saved by the Ariq, the governor of Krakentown. And even though she is attracted to him right from the start, she has learned to guard her heart well, and to trust no one with her secrets.

Ariq, also known as the Kraken King, and who was once one of the most powerful men in the Horde rebellion, does not know what to make of the very interesting woman he rescued from an airship. He is instantly attracted to her humor and her clever mind, but knows that she is hiding secrets. But seeing as he has no plan on letting her go, he intends to find out everything about her and to set aflame the fire that burns between them.

But the recent sieges on airships by marauders have a more sinister meaning than Ariq believed, and once they reach the Red City, he will have to fight as only the Kraken King can, to save the woman he has come to love and the people of his town. Because Ariq knows where the Skybreaker, a war machine with terrifying power, is hidden. And there are those that would use any pawn, any weakness of Ariq, to force him to reveal its location. And Zenobia has come to mean everything to Ariq, she is his greatest weakness.

“Everything I do is to persuade you to stay. Every time I touch you, every time I look at you, every time I kiss you. Every time I get inside you I won’t stop until you’re crying my name. I intend to brand myself so deep into you that you could write a thousand stories but still not picture life without me. That is my purpose. If you put obstacles between us, I will use any strategy to tear them down.”

The romance in this book was absolutely FANTASTIC. Zenobia and Ariq are wonderful main characters, and I loved watching these two fall for each other. Because of Zenobia’s past at the hands of her father, and the people who used her to gain money from her brother, she has trouble believing that Ariq really cared for her. And I loved how Ariq pursued Zenobia, how he fought to breach the walls she had build around her heart, convincing her how much he loved her and admired her. He fought for her trust, showing her again and again the lengths he would go to to keep her safe, and that he would never let her go. Their romance was intense, with wonderful banter and very hot and sexy times. I loved it.

The steampunk genre has become a favorite of mine. I find it incredibly fascinating. I loved the world-building in this book. The airships, balloon flyers and steel walkers that looks like giant crabs were fantastic. As were the krakens that use to be squids before being modified, the sharks that became armored megaladons, and the boilerworms that eats anything in its path. The author did a fantastic job at describing everything in just enough detail that I could clearly picture it, without overwhelming me with unnecessary descriptions and words.

The plot was so captivating. Right from the first page I was hooked, and I could not put this book down. I loved the mystery surrounding their attacks, and finding out who was targeting Ariq and Zenobia and why. And their journey of escaping captivity, and of trying to put a stop those who want to use the Skybreaker for their own use was so well written. There was never a dull moment in this book.

I savored each and every single page of this book. Never before have I been so reluctant to see the end coming near. I wanted it to last forever.

I absolutely adore this book, and this series. And I can’t recommend it enough. A must read for all who loves a powerful romance with wonderful characters and fantastic world-building.

The Kraken King was a great story, it is by far my favorite in this steam punk series. I liked both the hero and the heroine, they were both likable people who I enjoyed reading about. Ariq was a pretty amazing hero, he was head over heels for Zenobia and vowed to protect her and be her shield - and he meant it and showed it by at one point breaking a man in half who was attacking her then making her other attacker tell everyone he meets that Zenobia is now under his protection and anyone who comes after her will have to come through him (be still my heart). Zenobia was a sensible woman who was finally able to find a man she could trust to want her for herself, not for how much money her brother had. I enjoyed how their relationship developed at a reasonable rate with them taking the time to get to know each other and work through issues and misunderstandings that came up because they grew up in different worlds and both of them were keeping (justifiable) secrets. I don't give out many 5 star reviews these days but this story deserved it.

Just wonderful- review to follow. Hero- took my breath away. The things he said, how he treated the heroine. Just wonderful. Heroine- respect and admiration. She was a phenomenal woman.

Merged review:

Where to begin, with one of the most interesting and absorbing books I have read in a while?

This is a long and complex book- you can buy and read it in 8 separate parts- but it rewards the reader who perseveres. There is so much detail in the story, so much complexity in the the historical, political and military aspects of the book, that you need to take your time to do it justice.

The characterisation is brilliant, and with a longer book I guess an author has the time to layer the characters. Our heroine, Zenobia, is just wonderful. Her initial fears and the protective walls she has erected around herself are justified once we are made aware of her situation. And Ariq, one of the most wonderful heroes I have come across, is a complex and conflicted man. Complex because of the circumstances surrounding his birth and family, and conflicted because of his strong sense of duty to his people, which has him having to choose between them and Zenobia at times.

Their adventures, the dramas, the battles, the torture (it was actually awful and I struggle with torture at the best of times, but it's doubly hard when I am so invested in the characters) and their incredibly passionate love is heartbreaking. The military aspect was fascinating, too, and I could see so many parallels to today. (I have to say, this author really impressed me with her research.)

I could quote so many things that Ariq says to Zenobia, where he declares his love again and again in the most poetic and emotional ways as he tries to break down her walls, to earn her trust, but I would run out of space. There is a depth to their feelings that is usually missing from much of the Romance I read today.

What a glorious surprise to discover this book!

This book is split into eight parts and gives us former smuggler thief, and rebel the very delicious Ari – also known as the Kraken King and governor of Krakentown and writer Zenobia Fox, the sister of infamous adventurer Archimedes Fox (Book 2: Heart of Steel), a woman of keen intelligence.

Fed up of being kidnapped and wanting to experience some of the adventures she writes about, Zenobia under the alias of a widow with two mercenaries disguised as her maid and valet, accompanies her childhood friend to the wilds of Australia. What she doesn’t expect are the perilous adventures that would ensue and that she would draw the undivided attention of the dangerous Kraken King.

Both MCs were very enjoyable, and the heat between them fab to see, although a bit more banter and sizzle and spark would have been great at the start.

Ariq had me sighing in pleasure and smiling a fair bit and loved him for Zenobia his actions throughout leave the reader in no doubt he would put her first. I like the fact Ariq isn’t a manwhore, later in the story it’s revealed he has been Zenobia is Ariq is one hero who knows how to ensure the heroine enjoys carnal delights from the get-go.

After the torture, Ariq endures and everything else that had happened, I was expecting a bit more when it came to the face-off with the , it underwhelmed me a tad. Also, things did get a tiny bit overly sweet with the two MCs after the face-off/near the end but not painfully so.

This book had me mentally clapping my hands in absolute delight as I read, spent most of the night devouring this having to force myself to stop reading and sleep. I can so see myself re-reading this.

I loved that after reading book one jumping straight to this book, book four didn’t lead to any trouble; this can be read comfortably as a standalone/out of order.

The Kraken King is the fourth installment in Meljean Brook's adult romance/steampunk series titled: Iron Seas. I am a huge fan of this series and have been fortunate to have access to all the audiobooks at my local library. The narration on these is incredible by the way! I highly recommend the audio versions. I am slowly but surely getting through all the novels and novellas...and they are amazing!!!

While I enjoyed The Kraken King, I didn't love it quite as much as some of the others. It was VERY long and I definitely felt the length. I think that alone is what prompted the three-star rating from me. However, there was some fun action, suspense, and war-related strategy going on that made the storyline feel incredibly engaging. The steampunk world Ms. Brook has created astounds me with every book I read. The adult romance aspect is also such a treat in this series, although I should note it feels pretty minimal in this one compared to the rest. Readers still get some sexy scenes, but the romance is more of a trust me, marry me, love me type of scenario. There's nothing unsexy about that though.

Overall, I liked The Kraken King and would recommend it to followers of the series. According to Ms. Brook's website, she appears to be writing just one more installment before the series end. I am soooooo sad, but all good things must come to a close sometime. I'm just happy I found this series at all. It's been some serious fun!!! Check it out!

My favorite quote:
“I think the difference is not in the man, but in how many stand behind him.”

Note: This story was originally published as a serial novel (a book published in episodes) from April 15, 2014 to June 3, 2014. The order goes like this:
#4.1-The Kraken King and the Scribbling Spinster
#4.2-The Kraken King and the Abominable Worm
#4.3-The Kraken King and the Fox's Den
#4.4-The Kraken King and the Inevitable Abduction
#4.5-The Kraken King and the Iron Heart
#4.6-The Kraken King and the Crumbling Walls
#4.7-The Kraken King and the Empress's Eyes
#4.8-The Kraken King and the Greatest Adventure

The novel was later published in a compiled form (The Kraken King), which is what I read...and thank God for that! I am so done with this serial business. I understand there are both positives and negatives of publishing in this format, but personally as a reader, I tend to only focus on the negatives in terms of serials. I just can't help it. I guess I don't have the patience to wait for another tidbit of a captivating story (which is why I wait and watch TV series all at once when they arrive on Netflix...yeah, I'm one of those people. If I'm not on goodreads for a few days that's why lol.) When reading a serial novel, I view the experience as if you're having a really amazing dream and get rudely woken up in the middle of it and you can't go back to sleep to see what happens next. Actually you can't finish this cliffhanger-ish dream for weeks or sometimes months.
description

In my opinion, it SUCKS! However, I must acknowledge that some readers must enjoy reading in a serial format or else why would more and more authors choose to go this route? Based on Ms. Brook's explanation, she appeared to have her readers' best interests at heart and I can respect that. You can read her explanation HERE.

The Iron Seas series includes the following installments as of May 2015. The ratings are my personal opinion only.
#0.4-The Blushing Bounder
#0.5-Here There Be Monsters ★★★★★
#0.6-The Hook
#1-The Iron Duke ★★★★★
#1.5-Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City ★★★★☆
#2-Heart of Steel ★★★☆☆
#2.5-Tethered
#3-Riveted ★★★★☆
#3.4-Wrecked
#3.5-Part of anthology: Enthralled
#4-The Kraken King ★★★☆☆

DNF at 30% which seems not much, but in this case I think I have given it a fair chance, since I have listen to almost 7 hours of the audiobook, which is almost a normal length book.

The way this story is told is just not for me. I have a very difficult time caring for any of the characters and for whatever was going on. I am very impatient and I usually need to get engage on the story very quickly, otherwise I just don’t care and I don’t have the patience to wait. I need a less slow kind of telling of the story, less details and more development, it is too dragging right from the start. It is not bad, it is simply not the kind of book I am interested in. I am sure that the story will end up being great, I just don’t think is worth it for me the wait. It was too much work right from the very beginning to try to get into the whole thing. I am also not a fan of the steampunk theme and I haven’t read any other book of the series, so I didn’t go into it with previos knowledge of the world and characters or accumulated interest and investment, which I think it was key to make me care. Maybe I’ll get the first installment a try and see what happens, but I can’t with this one anymore.

Another imaginative instalment of the Iron Seas series which was originally released as a serial. I enjoyed it especially the visual picture that Meljean Brook excels at, floating cities, mechanical monsters and a great array of vibrant characters not the least being Ariq, the Kraken King. At 576 pages a little too long, perhaps when it was published in its entirely a little editing wouldn't have gone astray but this didn't really detract from enjoying a swashbuckling tale, well told.

Although I harbored my doubts when Brooks announced that The Kraken King would be written in a serialized format, I found myself pleasantly surprised by how effectively it came together as a cohesive novel. The latest in this vividly imaginative steampunk series follows Zenobia Fox, the sister of adventurer Archimedes Fox, and her experiences are no less enthralling than that of her sibling. The Kraken King worked particularly effectively due to its length. It feels longer than her other novels--and rightly so, due to the serial format--but it also allows her to infuse more detail and depth into the world and her characters. The romantic tension is prolonged, a slow-burn that feels so good and the problems that rip these two apart are wholly mental and all the more realistic for it. Of course, Brooks excels at political machinations and introducing new facets to the world she has created, time and time again, so these books are all-round winners through-and-through. If you haven't picked them up yet; do.

Note: At this time, the only way to read this book is to purchase the 8-part serialize novel.

Zenobia Fox, sister of the infamous adventurer Archimedes Fox, spends more time living vicariously through the intrepid tales she pens rather than out in the real world. She embarks on journey with Helene, her childhood friend, to the Red City, where Helene’s husband works as the French ambassador to Nippon. However, as their airship approaches the Australian continent, it is attacked by marauders and shot down near Krakentown. Luckily the governor of Krakentown, Ariq, aka The Kraken King, is able to rescue Zenobia and her associates. Meanwhile, Ariq has only one goal and that is to protect his town and citizens. He doesn’t have time for the distractions Zenobia brings; however, he insists on escorting Zenobia and Helene on the dangerous route to the Red City himself.

The Kraken King shares the wonderful story of how a sheltered spinster and a honorable warrior meet and fall in love. Their journey is unlike any I’ve read before, and I was simply blown away. Although the story takes place in the familiar (to me) world of Ms. Brook’s Iron Seas series, almost all aspects of this story are unique and new. The reader is introduced to a number of supporting characters throughout the first few chapters, but I never felt overwhelmed or confused. The author does a wonderful job creating an immediate connection to the characters and the story. In addition, the locale for the book is one that the author has not touched on prior to this book. The world-building is tight and absolutely riveting. Ms. Brook creates such vivid visual imagery, that I almost feel like I’m right there, aside the characters - seeing everything they see. I also enjoyed the additional new creatures and gadgets that make appearances throughout the novel.

Although The Kraken King was penned as an eight-part serial, the book can be read from start to finish and remain a solid, cohesive story. But what the serial format does is give the entire book several mini-adventures, each creating a great deal of mounting tension that kept me glued to my Kindle and anxious to find out what would happen next. The action is well-paced, and although there are several riveting scenes, the story also has some well-placed down times. I appreciate how the author slows the entire story about mid-way through the book, affording Ariq and Zenobia some one-one-one time. These moments are the ones that provide for emotional character growth and allowed me to connect to the couple on a deeper level.

The overall story involving the marauders, who they work for, and discovering what the ultimate goal is for Ariq’s adversaries is exciting and well-played. Pieces of the puzzle come together in chunks, and the reader has both Ariq and Zenobia’s observations and intelligence to guide the way through the maze. I absolutely loved the climatic scenes and overall direction of this ongoing plot. Ariq was placed into an impossible situation, and I appreciate how the author addressed the complexity of the situation, coming to a conclusion that is both emotionally and intellectually satisfying. The story is written with an eye for detail, creating intense tension, which is never over-the-top or gratuitous. I cannot stress how well done the whole situation is written.

Although the story itself is phenomenal, the heart of The Kraken King is the unbelievably touching and rousing romance between Ariq and Zenobia. The sexual tension between Ariq and Zenobia is outstanding. It is amplified by the reader’s capability to see into both characters’ minds and hearts. Ms. Brook does a fantastic job bringing the pair close and then pulling them apart just a little bit. What I appreciate is that the issues and problems driving a wedge between the couple, while they are mostly misunderstandings, hold some basic truth behind the concerns. And the consequences of any wrong action could be the lives of the people closest to both. The conflict and hidden truths are well-established, so the back and forth nature does not feel contrived.

When Ariq makes statements like

“He hadn’t known that simply holding her in his arms would feel like a gift.”

how can one NOT be moved? The pair’s love grows with each chapter, and the struggle to find the happy middle while keeping their individual identities only adds to the strength of their relationship. They share both intimate and humorous moments, giving and taking, examining and feeling. I simply adore their journey discovering a love that is true and deep.

Honestly, I could just go on and on about The Kraken King. From start to end, the romance, humor, and political intrigue are sublime. The entire story builds to a crescendo that is the culmination of everything which came before it: every word, every look, every emotion... they all build and explode. The emotions are so powerful that they provoked true tears from my eyes. The suspense so gripping that my heart was pounding in reaction. The stakes are high and I am happy to report that every conflict is resolved. I am completely satisfied with the emotional content, the tension and action, and the conflict resolution. I feel that Ms. Brook does a marvelous job wrapping up the story without giving readers an easy out.

I just don’t know how to put into words how wonderful this book is as a whole. You know when you finish a book with a full heart and tears of joy streaming down your cheeks? Sad for the story to end, but so happy with what happened? It is definitely my favorite read so far this year and my first perfect A+ book of 2014. Ariq and Zenobia have become my favorite all-time romance couple. This story brought tears to my eyes and warmth to my heart. It’s just THAT GOOD!

What a ride! When Aarya said she was considering making this steampunk romance her entire personality, I immediately moved it up on my TBR. I read the first book in the series last year and, while I enjoyed it, a lot of it didn’t age well. I subsequently have not read the middle books yet but given how much I loved this one, I’ll be rectifying that soon.

Adventure and intrigue, an author FMC, and a MMC who says he will come for her, no matter what, AND THEN HE DOES. I swooned so hard over Ariq and Zenobia’s story. Zenobia is considered to have a plain appearance and she’s become very pragmatic about her options as a result, especially since past suitors have only wanted her for her money or access to her brother. She struggles to believe Ariq really wants her and oh how my heart ached. This had such good angst and it made me cry a couple of times.

I would like to make this passage my personality:
“You are my queen,” he told her, and clasped her hand to his overfilled heart. Though emotion roughened his voice, he spoke quietly. This was only for her. “I am your sword and your shield. I am your wolf and your steed. Mountains will tremble at my approach, for they know I will tear them apart if they ever stand between us. But you need not be afraid, Zenobia Fox, because my heart is iron and my will is steel, and before the new moon rises, I will come for you.”

This is what I’m talking about!!! Ariq knows who he is, what he wants, and how to see things through. I loved the way he persevered and endeavored to prove to Zenobia that he was with and for her. He would never contain or limit her. And she wants to be by his side to support him. They made such a fantastic team.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the meta element of the adventure stories Zenobia writes and the idea of what would be too unbelievable in one of her stories vs. the very things that were happening to her and Ariq. The secondary characters were similarly great. I could not have loved this more!

Characters: Ariq is an Asian (perhaps Mongolian) Governor of Krakentown, former military, and the Kraken King. He’s in his mid-30s. Zenobia is a white author and a virgin. This is largely set in Krakentown, Australia.

Content notes: , murder (generally in self-defense), violence, on page torture of MMC (use of screw beetles), drugged drink (MMC aware and forced to drink it), physical assault, kidnapping (FMC and MMC both taken, including a thwarted attempt and multiple past attempts for FMC), zombies, boilerworm attack (giant worms), gunshot wound, MMC shot with arrows that pierce lung (recovers), weapon of mass destruction (coveted but not used), ship attacked (FMC okay), secondary character with prosthetic limbs (prostheses destroyed in attack but he recovers and gets new ones), FMC’s cover story is that she’s a widow (untrue), anxiety, aftermath of war casualties and mass destruction, war/battle references and imagery, FMC’s father was physically, emotionally, and financially abusive (he was later shot by one of his aviators—justice!), past death of mother (botched abortion; she was possibly raped by landlord or else exchanged her body to cover rent money), past execution of MMC’s mother (spy) and assassination of father, visitors to the Red City have to wear plague masks (more political reasons than active threat of plague), pregnant secondary character (due to infidelity ), vomit (pregnant character), childhood poverty, past incarceration and torture of brother (MMC broke him out of prison), concern of suicidal ideation for secondary character (he’s okay), family planning discussion, on page sex, unprotected sex (no pregnancy), opium for pain, cigarillo (secondary characters), small penis joke, a lot of penis commentary in general (including kraken penis), gender essentialism, ableist language, mention of past earthquake that buried people (MMC helped dig out survivors), references to past plague, reference to a woman who was enslaved and raped and became pregnant

The insta-love and purple passion really show Brook's romance roots, but overall a fun fictional universe (Australo-Japanese-Mongol Horde steampunk is a nice change from the Victoriana) and an entertaining adventure.

What an unexpectedly delightful read. I decided it was high time to clear out my TBR shelf. I have books that have been sitting there since 2015 (like this one) -- it's time to read them or acknowledge I never will. Given that I approached this as a bit of a chore, I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I adored both the fearful yet brave heroine who is overcoming her past trauma and the hero -- a true man among men who has made a quiet life for himself and the people he cares about. There was definitely insta-lust, but their relationship was built on mutual respect, strong communication, and partnership (the attraction certainly didn't hurt things!). For a flavor, check out this quote:
“You are my queen,” he told her, and clasped her hand to his overfilled heart. Though emotion roughened his voice, he spoke quietly. This was only for her. “I am your sword and your shield. I am your wolf and your steed. Mountains will tremble at my approach, for they know I will tear them apart if ever they stand between us. But you need not be afraid, Zenobia Fox, because my heart is iron and my will is steel, and before the new moon rises, I will come for you.”

Even if predictable, the adventure and mystery kept me turning pages. It only dragged a bit around the 60-75% mark. But I appreciated the story's length.

The problem here was that it was a.) too effing long and b.) nothing really happened.

As the book is split into parts I reckon reading the parts with breaks is the way to go and not read it all in one sitting.

The author is talented and has great world building but as previously stated nothing happened. There is a lot of inner monologue of how they have feelings for one another and they put unnecessary obstacles in their way.

I love steampunk and books one and two are the best of the series. Alas no more can be said.

Meljean Brook and Nalini Singh were my gateway drugs into Romance. Back in early 2012, I started watching Felicia Day’s Vaginal Fantasy Book Club. One of the early bookclub selections was the Iron Duke, which I was lucky enough to get from my local library. I was sucked into the her Steampunk/alternate history world, The Iron Seas, where the Horde (Genghis Khan’s mighty empire) had overrun Asia and Europe and had enslaved great swaths of the world through nanobots hidden in sugar.

Meljean Brook hooked me with her fantastic world-building and in every book, novella and short since she has expanded the world a little further. We have traveled to the zombie infested European interior, infiltrated the New World settlements, discovered hidden Scandinavian villages, traveled to remote African trading posts, and met colorful characters from up-tight New Worlders, rebel sultans, imposing blacksmiths, pirate queens and outlandish archaeologists. From the most powerful of English Dukes to orphan gutter rats, Meljean Brook has populated the world with fascinatingly diverse characters.

In the Kraken King, the focus shifts from the west to Australia and the eastern fringes of the Golden Empire. Zenobia Fox is a writer used observing and never participating in the adventures she chronicles, even though she is also the daughter of notorious traitor and brother to trouble-making adventurer. Her connection to Archimedes Fox, the star of her serials and brother is no longer a secret and she can no longer hide out in her quiet North Sea village. Too many ransom seeking kidnappers have come bursting through her door, so she decides it is time stop being a sitting duck and to venture forth and see the world for herself. When her friend Helene needs a companion for a urgent trip to the Red City, she leaps at the opportunity. However she is soon leaping from the wreckage of her airship when it come under attack by marauders off the coast of Australia. She leaps right into the arms of one of the most dangerous men in the world, the former rebel Ariq the Kraken King.

The first two parts of this serial were fantastic. Great character development and tension as Arriq and Zenobia try to figure each other while trying to keep their own secrets and those of the one they love. I don’t usually sign up for serials usually waiting for the collected edition to come out as I did with Ruthie Knox’s Roman Holiday but this is one I would happily recommend. Each part has it own arc within the larger Kraken King story arc and are long enough to be satisfying. Zenobia, Ariq and the Eastern fringes of the empire hold lots of surprises for the reader and I can’t wait to learn more about them all.

I love the world Meljean Brook built in her Iron Seas series. It's been a while since I read one, but was very happy to discover that Zenobia Fox -- the author of a popular adventure series and sister to Archimedes -- is the the heroine of this book. The book starts off almost immediately with Zenobia in peril as the airship she's on comes under attack. Ariq, the Kraken King and our hero, took me a bit longer to get to know and warm to.

The book is filled with adventures as Zenobia and Ariq are repeatedly put in danger. Along the way we get to see more of the world of the Iron Seas, as well as many, many different characters.

The sections (chapters?) of the book were originally released in serial form, and as a single book it reads a bit long, and slightly repetitive. As a result, it dragged a bit for me in the middle, but overall the read was definitely worth it for me, in particular the growth (or perhaps self-realiziation) of Zenobia. I would give it a B, so four stars here.

This was probably my favorite book of 2014. It has everything - action, adventure, emotions, a badass hero and a leading lady with spirit and a brain. I found myself smiling, laughing and enjoying this adventure just as much the 2nd time around even though it had only been 6 months between reads. This has an established spot in my all time favorite books.

Fun and swoony and a rollicking good time. Closest in tone with Book #2 of the series. Overly long/drawn out at parts but that's just the natural result of a serial being combined into one book--and being read (nearly) in one sitting. #SpinsterAdventure FTW.

I came late to the Iron Seas steampunk romance series, but I fell hard as soon as I started reading the opening pages of the Iron Duke. I devoured each novella and novel in the series and now have come to the last remaining unread installment, The Kraken King. I've had it on my shelf for several months, but I knew once I read it that I would be out of Iron Seas adventures. But, alas, it was time. I bucked up and dove in thanks to the nudge from a few of my reading challenge requirements. Adventure and excitement steampunk-style did indeed await and I had a nice long series of connected tales to finish things off right.

The Kraken King is book four in the Iron Seas series. A new reader could do all right jumping in at this book, but they would constantly feel like they had missed a great deal since there are constant references to other characters and situations. This was originally a serial story which is evident when the reader begins, but it has been edited to make a nice cohesive novel.

Kraken King introduces a new hero, new geographic setting and situation, but the heroine has been a side character since book two. Zenobia Fox is the sister to the hero, Archimedes Fox in Heart of Steel. She's a writer who uses her brother's adventures, real and imagined, along with adventures for Yasmeen, Archimedes wife, in her popular books. She hides her identity as the writer and as Archimedes' sister because of the danger. Her quiet life of writing about others has her dissatisfied and wanting her own adventure so when a childhood friend decides she needs to go around the world to join her ambassador husband at his posting, Zenobia goes along. Little did she know that her own dangerous adventure awaited in the form of the infamous Kraken King, an old smuggling partner of her brother's.
Ariq doesn't know what to make of Miss Inkspell, but he knows she is lying and hiding secrets. He's intrigued in the woman he rescued from an airship attack, but also has his hands full with governing his town on the wild Australian continent, looking after his brother, and figuring out what the mysterious marauders are up to with their odd attacks on random airships that don't appear to be for profit or any other gain he can see.

The action-packed intrigue and adventure along with spicy romance are good strong elements, but I also appreciate the creative world the author has written and developed across all her books. I love how each major novel and some of the novellas expand across the Iron Seas' world. The Kraken King is far from Europe and focuses on the Australian and Nipponese (Japanese) culture that did their own freedom fighting against the Hoarde that spread from Mongolia in their direction just like it did across the Asian subcontinent, Africa, and Europe. I love that I could anticipate a new exotic setting along with a new group of characters with this one.

I enjoyed Ariq and his backstory. He was a fun rascal and is straight up with his words and his feelings. He is blunt and shocking, but oh so tempting to a woman like Zenobia who writes a good game, but has little experience. Zenobia was something of a hang up for me. I get why she thought she had to keep secrets particularly about who she was because she'd been in danger before when people knew her identity. However, there was a part of me that it didn't sit well when she was hiding that she's a writer and treating everyone and everything around her like fodder for her books. I give her credit that she kept what was between her and Ariq off limits, but that was for selfish reasoning. And, here's the thing, she stuck out and drew attention that she supposedly didn't want with her scribbling her notes and poking and prodding with questions. She was asking to be whisked into the damsel in distress role. So, it took me a while to warm up to her, but I did enjoy her and Ariq together as they brought their own talent to the table and had a nice opposites attract thing sizzling between them.

The build up was good if a bit lagging at times before the end and I was well satisfied with what I got. I'm sad it is all over. This is without doubt one of my favorite steampunk romance series and one I will not hesitate to push at anyone looking to start the genre or needing a great steampunk world full of colorful characters, suspense, gritty action, and an exciting, clever world.

Why did I read this book? It is steampunk and romance, clearly written as multiple novellas put into one book with what one assumes was no extra editing. So much here for me to make fun of. And yet...

I didn't hate this book, I kind of liked it. The characters are simplistic but this book isn't trying to be anything else then what it is. I do wish my book group would have given me a heads up about the graphic sex scenes that I just happened to be in public when reading.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: A woman craving adventure finds herself getting almost more than she can handle when she’s rescued by a man who quickly becomes fascinated by her.

Opening Sentence: If this letter is in your hands instead of on my desk where I left it, you must have flown to Fladstrand without first collecting your correspondence in Port Fallow–where the note I sent to you would have saved you a trip.

The Review:

I’m a huge fan of Meljean Brook, especially of her Guardians series. So I was very excited to read and review The Kraken King, even though I haven’t yet read book 3 in the Iron Seas series. Thankfully, reading book 3 was not necessary, and I was able to thoroughly enjoy the segments that make up this serial book.

Zenobia Fox loves writing her adventure stories, but something’s missing. She wants to experience an adventure of her own, not live vicariously through the tales of her brother and his wife. In hopes of finding adventure, Zenobia agrees to accompany a friend on a journey. Little does Zenobia know just how much adventure she will find on this trip. Their airship is attacked, and they are forced to jump overboard. Happily, they are rescued by a mysterious stranger and his companions. Upon reaching the shore, Zenobia is shocked to discover their rescuer is none other than the infamous Kraken King, a man who has a reputation for not letting go of something (or someone) if it’s caught his interest, and as luck would have it, he has set his sights on Zenobia…

Meljean Brook always creates wonderful characters, and the characters here are no exception. Ariq is an alpha male in the very best way: completely in charge but without a cocky attitude to ruin everything. He often mentions having an iron will, and he uses that in his dealings with Zenobia. It makes him remarkably attractive. He may have officially made my book boyfriends list!

I love that Zenobia doesn’t let herself become super flustered by Ariq’s attention. Unlike a lot of virgins in romance novels, she accepts the attention/attraction and looks at it as a different kind of adventure. She’s definitely not your average heroine!

This story was originally published in serial form, and I only currently have access to parts one through six. These six parts are wonderfully well done, full of action and pulse pounding romance. I have no doubt that parts seven and eight are equally well done, and I can’t wait to get my hands on them!

Notable Scene:

“What sort of bow?”

Turning the book around, Helene tapped her finger alongside a drawing of a man bending over at the waist so far that his forehead was almost level with his feet.

She was supposed to fold herself in half? “That’s not physically possible.”

“It’s important,” Helene stressed, though when she glanced down at the figure, a little crease formed between her brows, as if she were also wondering how to attain the position without toppling over. “Failing to bow is a slap against his honor–and a man who is dishonored will kill himself.”

“If someone doesn’t bow?” At Helene’s solemn nod, Zenobia stared at her in disbelief. This had to be utter nonsense. “Will he do it at that very moment?”

“Yes.” Helene pinched the first fifty or sixty pages of the book between her fingers. “All of this explains how critical it is not to insult a man’s honor.”

How unfortunate for any men who crossed paths with Zenobia, then. She sometimes gave offense when she didn’t mean to–though when she did give offense, she usually meant to. Upon reaching the Red City, however, she might inadvertently leave a trail of corpses in her wake.

“That custom favors women, I think,” Zenobia said. “If a husband strays or if he proves a disappointment, the wife only has to refrain from bowing and she is quickly free of him.”

FTC Advisory: Berkley/Penguin provided me with a copy of The Kraken King. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

The Kraken King first began as a writing experiment, a serial created by the talented Meljean Brook as part of her Iron Seas series. The results is the sensational novel here for the first time in its complete entirety, a Steampunk Romance lover's dream come true.

Originally created as an eight-part serial, the story is completely action-packed, each scene fills the pages with no wasted space, no dull moments and the plot moves fast with no shortage of Steampunk elements. The story opens up with Zenobia Fox trying to escape being kidnapped. Sister to the infamous Archimedes, she writes stories of daring action and adventure, but has little experience herself. When an opportunity arises to join her childhood friend on her way to Australia, she seizes the chance to research her next Lady Lynx novel and hopes for a little adventure for herself along the way. What she could never have expected was the adventure she was about to embark on was greater than any fiction she dared dream of. From the moment her airship is attacked by marauders, and she is rescued by Ariq, AKA the Kraken King, the adventure and danger begins, along with the very unexpected attraction to this former smuggler and thief.

I jumped at the chance to finally pick back-up this series, excited to read The Kraken King as a complete whole. The story did not disappoint in any way. The moment Zenobia jumps from her attacked airship and crosses path with the Kraken King, I was hooked. From the threat of giant abominable worms, to deadly mercenaries, from Krakentown to a den of smugglers and further to the mysterious Red City, Ariq and Zenobia travel together as danger threatens not only their lives, but the very empire. The world building is so well-done, each setting fascinating and the scenery keeps changing as the adventure unfolds. Living cities of coral and strange steampunk elements of living creatures combined with gadgets and technology abound, and through all this are two very smart, strong-willed characters to fall in love with.

A twist of circumstances, misunderstandings and secret identities result in a slow-build, emotional journey of romantic tension as this couple grows ever closer. The romance between the Kraken King and Zenobia was every-bit as wonderfully done as the other elements of the story, with plenty of dimensional characterization. I adored watching as this couple struggled through set-backs and danger, learning to trust in each other. Both growing emotionally and intimately together even as the author thrusts them into the heart of danger more than once.

The Kraken King is a perfect balance of Steampunk and Romance. I will not soon forget this adventure into the exciting world Meljean Brook's series the Iron Seas with an amazing and unique world and an unforgettable couple to love.

My Rating: 5 stars. I loved it!

Well, almost 20 hours of audiobook read wonderfully by Alison Larken.
Phew!

Not the smoothest read but full of intelligent intrigue, strong characters and complex world building.

The MCs are people of many faces.
Zenobia Fox aka Geraldine Inkslinger aka Zenobia Gunther-Baptiste... a writer, a loving sister, a wealthy woman, a survivor.
Ariq aka the Governor, aka the Kraken King, etc.
He hides an enormous secret (and many small ones), she hides her identity. She's been kidnapped so many times she is a deft hand at it.
Today she plays the companion of a childhood friend and Zenobia's companions play the parts of lady's maid and valet. Til pirates attack and they are stranded in the village of the Kraken King.

Arik and Zenobia are attracted to each other from the get go, but it isn't love at first sight or anything as crass as that. At first they just mean to enjoy a fling. He's not a manho and she IS a virgin. But misunderstandings keep pulling them apart as soon as they get close. Normally that kind of thing annoys the bejeezus out of me. But this time it kept me as enthralled as the unravelling mystery did.

At about halfway the misunderstandings are all squared away, but then it becomes an ugly dance with Zenobia's insecurities. I understood why she kept the walls she did. But for me, this was the weakest part of the book and I often lost patience with Zenobia, even though I still liked her. The rest of the world building and the interactions of all the myriad characters striving to out-plot each other, kept me listening/reading. Arik was devoted by now. LOVED his character!

And I was so glad I kept reading, because the last couple hours of the book was FANTASTIC! Wonderfully romantic with deliciously righteous justice and the underdog defeating the badguys!

Originally written as a serial, it reads as a seamless story when all put together. Safety is good
