This second edition of Dennis Howitt’s Introduction to Qualitative Methods in Psychology provides a wealth of practical and theoretical advice which has made it such a trusted and valuable resource for students.
Clear explanations and examples take you through qualitative research from data collection to analysis, and dedicated sections offer guidance on ethics, quality and report writing. Methods are broken down to give step-by-step practical advice and guidance, making sure that you understand the theory and can carry out your own research.
All of this is achieved while providing a thorough theoretical and historical context for the various methods.
Dennis Laurence Howitt was a graduate of Brunel University and the University of Sussex. His research career began with the study of mass communications but has developed into a broader interest in the application of psychology to social issues.
His primary research areas are:
*the effects of mass communications especially with reference to crime, violence and pornography *racism and the profession of psychology *paedophiles and sex offenders, child abuse *forensic psychology
He is a chartered (forensic) psychologist and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
His publications also include books on statistics, computing and methods.
God, what a stupid, stupid book. No offense. (Ok, yes, offense.) There's no science to be found here, just the author's personal opinions. Some of the methods are interesting enough, IPA resembles science even - but so much of it is political, subjective, and with sample sizes of like... 2. How can anything general be said about the experiences of two people? You will never catch me doing qualitative research so this was utterly pointless for me to read. I do respect it (somewhat) but I'm too much of a realist to conduct it. (But narrative analysis does look kinda fun). Anyways... can't wait to have the exam! (Lord help me).
In need of: -more examples to illustrate each methods -an editor who remembers this book aims at facilitating, not frustrating, the research process
For someone who would like to get familiar with the qualitative methods, maybe the overview, the procedure section and the one and only one example of each chapter is more than enough.
