The Naming of Jesus in Hebrew Matthew by Nehemia Gordon

Rate this book
The Naming of Jesus in Hebrew Matthew examines the narrative of Yeshua's naming as recorded in Hebrew Matthew 1:18-25. The historical figure commonly known today as Jesus was a Jew named Yeshua who lived 2000 years ago in the Land of Israel. The original form of his name is recorded in the Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew preserved by a 14th-century Spanish rabbi named Shem Tov Ibn Shaprut.

The Naming of Jesus in Hebrew Matthew contains a full-color photograph of the British Library manuscript of Hebrew Matthew. The photograph contains the story of the naming of the Messiah as told in Matthew 1:18-25. The original form of the Messiah's Hebrew name Y'shua or Yeshua is easily identifiable on the photograph even for those not familiar with old Hebrew writing. The last word on the bottom left of the photograph below is the name of the Messiah written in medieval Hebrew script. The Jewish scribe who copied Hebrew Matthew wrote the name Y'shua or Yeshua in large letters in recognition of its importance in the context of the story of the naming. The name written in Hebrew letters Yod-Shin-Waw-Ayin spells the name Y'shua or Yeshua not Yahushua or Yehoshua whish is spelled in Hebrew Yod-Hay-Waw-Shin-Ayin!

Awesome

As a person who studies biblical Greek and Hebrew, this short book gives insight into the process of translation. The title could have been a better, as this is not a theological book into the naming of Jesus. Though not the main focus, it also continues to make the case, as others including Howard have, that Matthew was originally written in Hebrew.

original Matthew

The title itself was interesting so I bought the book. It’s a short read but extremely informative. I like the clarifications given for each chapter. It’s almost as though one has a personal teacher helping you through the book. I read Hebrew but found the scribes writing difficult until I found the key at the end which cleared a lot of my queries up. Thank you to the author for this valuable little insight to the Ospel of Matthew.

Short but Powerful

I have had the joy of listening to Dr. Nehemia Gordon teach his insights on the Hebrew texts on YouTube. Even though he claims not to believe in Yeshua as Messiah, he treats the subject matter with great attention to detail and respect. We keep praying for Israel, Yehovah's Chosen people and land. Not really worth the effort

Very basic review of some Hebrew words. I was either expecting too much or misunderstood what I was getting. The information was good and proper, just not much there. I should have spent my money and time on another resource.

Yeshua's Name

Knowing the REAL name of the Master is wonderful. Now when we call on His name, we actually know what it is! This is as thriling as knowing OUR Father's name is Yehovah. Thank you Nehemia for this short, perfect picture of grace.

Jesus in Hebrew Matthew

Didn't understand the content at all. Others might but I didn't so I'm not going to recommend it to readers. You'll have to decide.

To all readers of the Bible.

Very interesting. . Glad I read this part. Would think that all teaches of the word would be required to study this.

Great book

Love reading a book, that helps clarify some events in their historical context and how they can grow our learning about these events.

Even for a lay reader, with limited Hebrew, this short book has some very interesting and helpful details about the gospel of Matthew’s Hebrew origins.

Good but not what I expected

Very good info on Hebrew version of Matthew, though I was expecting more of the actual English translation from the Hebrew.
