R to L (Japanese Style). A tale of the Vampire King's tragic love and its consequences Final Volume!: Now that she knows the truth about Stella and the Black Swan, Kayuki is faced with a fateful decision concerning the conflict between her and Strauss. Strauss and Adelheid, meanwhile, prepare to deal with the looming alien invasion, knowing that the future of vampires, dhampires and humans depends on overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds!
There are some interesting personal relationships and political drama in this series overall, as well as compelling themes concerning self-sacrifice in exchange for world preservation, but the sheer amount of unnecessary plot threads bogs the series down and dampens the reading experience. The aliens and the Gozen society are both undeveloped villains who don't add much of anything to the story. I would have loved for the whole panspermia idea to be developed (detailing how vampires came to be in more depth, perhaps) but, alas, it was only given a fleeting mention in the second to last book. The art is decent to look at for a typical anime style, but nothing too special. For these reasons, I can only give this series as a whole 3 stars.
Buona lettura!
So this series, much like Kyo Shirodaira's previous series Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning, ended not with a bang but with a whimper.
The fight with the aliens was underwhelming despite the amount of time spent setting up for them. The final battle between Strauss and the Black Swan was also somewhat underwhelming as compared to the fight with Yuki at the start of the series.
It was getting good in the middle there, but this ending was just disappointing.
While predictable in outcome, this final volume of the series is done well and that definitely counts. While the series is a bit rough edged at the beginning, it grew into a solid, if decidedly different, vampire thriller well worth the reading.
