In this unusual and entertaining counting book, ten pig siblings embark on new adventures. Accompanying each adventure is an etching containing the numbers 0 to 9, as well as the ten piglets hidden within.
Arthur Geisert grew up in Los Angeles, California, and claims not to have seen a pig until he was an adult. Trained as a sculptor in college, Geisert learned to etch at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Geisert has published just about a book a year for the past thirty years. Every one of his books has been illustrated with etchings. His work has appeared in The New Yorker and The Horn Book Magazine. In 2010 his book Ice was selected as a New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated book of the year. Geisert currently lives in a converted bank building in Bernard, Iowa.
This book has amazing well detailed etching. It becomes a game to read and follow along with the plot as we also get to participate in a counting game. So well created.
A counting book that has a story about some pigs who are off to find a lost place with huge stone configurations that their mother told them about. Each page has the numerals 0 to 9 hidden in it. Great fun to search for them.
Illustrations are awesome - even though they are only one toned!
Counting - This book was a very interactive counting book. On each page you were to find 10 pigs and the numbers from 0-9. It is a very clever way to learn and review numbers.
This book tells a story and the readers also get to search the pictures for hidden numbers. I can see a high interest in young children with this book because of the seek and find pictures.
Not good for reading aloud, but great for a kid (or adult!) to read alone or with one other person. Some pictures are difficult, but there's an answer key in the back.
