I love traveling to scout out new and exciting settings for my books—but nothing beats a peaceful walk in the woods or a seat by the ocean close to home. Turns out, plot twists and inspiration show up just fine with a sea breeze and squirrels.

5++++++++++++++++++++++ Stars.
What an emotional journey. This book was just wow! I couldn't put it down. This book was quite different than anything I have read. The twists in it were unexpected and made it that much more different. It is a heartbreaking but beautiful story. I can't even begin to say how amazing this book was. I stayed up to the wee hours because I just couldn't put it down. It is a must read.

Another unexpected treasure. I was asked to review this book by the author and I skimmed the blurb, checked the genre and agreed. I'm so glad I did.
"There's always someone or something that will make you feel so strongly that you will go against everything you are ever taught or planned."
This book was completely addictive. It was a rollercoaster of intense emotions. If you aren't one for cathartic release, don't read this book. But I can tell you it is totally worth the tears.
"You will never ever just be some girl to me, you were the girl."
There is very little I can say without giving away some huge plot twists, because the blurb is limited and there are life changing developments in this book that kind of map out the entire destiny of the characters... so I'm very restricted with what I can mention...
What I can say, though, is that it is a page turner. I couldn't put it down and I was completely hooked. Kat is instantly likeable, Julian is totally moreish and the writing is extremely evocative! I was pulled in to the story and my heart was pulled in every direction imaginable.
"I didn't want to be that girl who meant nothing to you."
"Never, you are so much more, that is scares me. I'm in love with you Kat. I've been trying to fight it as hard as I could - but I can't anymore."
There are some very special surrounding characters that completely make the story what it is. But you will have to read if you'd like to find out more about that.
The ending is perfect. I couldn't have wished for a better HEA for these characters. I now need to go and restock my Kleenex supply, sort out the mess that is my tear stained face and get rid of this book hangover! And whilst I'm doing that, I want you all to add this to your TBR lists! It's a really beautifully, strong, emotional romance and I can't wait for everyone else to read it.

Sadly, her five year relationship ends when she walks in on her boyfriend with another woman. Irritated, but surprisingly not heartbroken, Kat decides to join a 9-month humanitarian mission to Africa. Although surrounded by sickness and death, Kat's life is forever changed by the one man who will hold her heart and change her future.
The Exception to the Rule is an independently published book that I would not have been drawn to if left to my own devices. The cover is absent a sinfully sexy male-model and the book description just seems.....meh. Definitely not the book for me. Or so I thought!
I was pleasant surprised to find how deeply touched I was by a story that communicated so much. Pain. Loss. Forgiveness. Passion. Acceptance. Love. The readers were drawn into the story throught the character's feelings and emotions. I was in tears when Kat's father, Anthony gifted her with a diamond pendant and said:
The moral to this review? Never judge a book by it's cover! You will love this heartwarming and inspiring story. The Exception to the Rule was an absolutely well done story. Simply wonderful!

For me, a book is only as good as the feelings that it inspires. The Exception to the Rule is only the second book to have ever evoked so much feeling that it inspired tears. The depth of emotions conveyed throughout this story was outstanding!
The moral to this review? Never judge a book by it's cover! You will love this heartwarming and inspiring story. The Exception to the Rule was an absolutely well done story. Simply wonderful!

Katrina “Kat” Vallia is a young, optimistic pediatrician, who volunteers to help sick children in Africa after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. She not only hopes to be able to do some good for these children, but she hopes by getting away, she can move on from having her heart broken.
While in Africa, she meets Dr. Julian Kiron, a sexy, career driven pediatric oncologist, who is completely devoted to his patients. His job is his life and he has made it clear that he will never get married or have children. Kat, who lost her mother at a young age and being raised an only child, is the complete opposite. She hopes to have a family someday.
Kat and Julian become friends immediately. Something between them just clicks. There is an instant attraction between them, but Kat fights her feelings towards Julian since he has no plans to ever settle down with a family. Sometimes, though, you just have to take a leap. And that’s how Kat ends up giving in to her feelings for Julian, even though she knows this relationship will end with possible heartache.
But, when Kat had to suddenly return home with a family emergency, she thinks she will never see Julian again. Julian is full of surprises though and he shows up on Kat’s doorstep to comfort her during a time in her life when she needed him the most. They realize during this time, they’ve both fallen in love with each. Kat wants Julian but she also wants a family. So she lets Julian go. They say their heart-breaking goodbyes thinking they will never see each other again.
Five years later, Kat needs Julian’s help when she receives some devastating news. Kat has a doozy of a secret she’s been keeping from Julian. And, while asking for his help, she has to tell him about her secret… that will change both their lives forever.
Phew. Let me tell you, this story is loaded with surprises. I feel like this book is broken up into two parts. The first half is Kat finding herself in Africa after having her heart broken. Her eyes are opened wide after seeing the way the people live and seeing how the doctors are completely devoted to their jobs helping these children. She didn’t care for Africa, at first, but then she grew to love it. And found a kind of happiness and companionship she’s always wanted in Julian, right before she suddenly had to leave. The second part of the book is about second chances and fighting desperately for someone you love. Kat and Julian both go through so many life changes and realize a lot of things about themselves as the story progresses.
I refuse to delve too much into the plot for fear of giving away too much. I think this book needs to be experienced the same way I did – not knowing anything besides what the book blurb says going into it. Not knowing made this book so much more special. I will say this--the story has romance, a very sweet and tender and soul-crushing romance, but it’s so much MORE than just a romance. There are so many twists and turns that I never saw coming. There is something I’m leaving out of my review that is a huge part of Julian and Kat’s story. I love this part of the book. This element of the story is a huge chunk of the plot that makes this story so much more heartbreaking and beautiful and life changing.
The characters in this book are simply wonderful. I fell in love with each and every one of them. They each bring something different to the story. My heart ached for Julian and Kat over and over and over. I have never cried so much while reading a story. I have never wanted for a group of characters to have a happy ending so bad in my life. To say I was sad when the story was over is a massive understatement. I wanted more!
Now, here is where I would like to apologize to the book. I did a disservice to this book by putting it down. I made a huge mistake thinking that there wasn’t enough interaction between the heroine and hero about 30% into the story. What I didn’t realize is that this story has many layers that make up such an intense and beautifully written story. Where I stopped reading, the story was only beginning to take shape. So, when I put the book down for two days, read another book, and then started this one again, I realized what a huge, HUGE mistake I made. I’m so glad my inner voice kept bugging me to pick this book back up because it’s absolutely awe-inspiring. This story is not only about romance, it’s about family, love, forgiveness, second chances, devotion, finding oneself, and so much more. It’s thought-provoking. It has HEART. It’s difficult to find the right words to describe my feelings since all of my words feel inadequate with the way I feel about this story. I can’t explain in detail how much this book truly means to me. It emotionally impacted me and I’m still thinking about it days later.
The Exception to the Rule is an honest, heartwarming, and amazing story with a perfect ending. This story will tug at your heart strings. You will sob continuously so, arm yourself with lots of tissues. But, despite all the crying, you will also laugh and smile and swoon. This book will make you feel a gamut of emotions! I will definitely be reading more from this author. I really hope my review does this book justice and everyone reads this story. It’s absolutely stunning!

I can NEVER go wrong with Ms Rinyu's books. Truthfully though, I can't believe I missed this book by her. I had no idea it was released back in 2012 or I would have given it a go, but otherwise, I'm so happy that I had a chance to read it now.
Now this book, no doubt, was a bucket fill of emotions. There were times that I wanted to cry with the protagonist, Kat, and other times I wanted to slap her upside her head. This was such a see-saw of emotions read but I loved it from front to back!

This book was just Ok. The plot had potential, and the concept was good, but it was poorly executed. Here are the big issues with this story:
First, the writing was just rather dull, stilted, ordinary. A lot of unnecessary detail and description that didn't really move the story along.
Second, everyone in Kat's life seemed to get cancer. The theme was way overdone, and therefore lost its impact. The writer must have an oncologist in her family.
Third, everyone in the book seemed to be a doctor. So, I found the interactions between all these doctors somewhat silly, overdone (again), and dull.
Fourth, a lot telling vs. showing. The author was telling you what happened, instead of taking you there to the scene and painting a picture with words...even using dialogue, etc. This, again, goes back to writing and execution.
Fifth...again the writing. This was supposed to be a Romance, but at times throughout story, I felt like I was reading a medical journal. The book took a while to get going, then became slightly interesting, then reverted back to dull and more medical play-by-plays. The romance was watered down and sterile.
Overall, this book just failed to keep my attention. Not sure how it got some great reviews.

If there is ever a book where I want to lock myself in a room with just my kindle and put the “Do Not Disturb” sign up, it’s for this book! The Exception to the Rule is AMAZING! It is everything I could ever want in a book and then some. I started reading Beth Rinyu’s book An Unplanned Lesson and fell in love with her writing style and jumped right into reading The Exception to the Rule. I can’t even tell you how much I fell in love with the story and characters in The Exception to the Rule. It’s hard not to fall in love when you are able to get to know the characters so well as if they were real and follow them along in their life for five years. See how much they grow, how much they love, how much sadness follows them.

The Exception to the Rule is a beautiful love story involving Kat, a 28 year-old doctor who catches her boyfriend cheating on her. She decides to go to Africa to help sick children for 9 months and help mend her broken heart. While in Africa Kat meets Julian (now he is Dr. McDreamy), he is young, handsome, already made a name for himself in the medical world and has a big heart… for his patients. He is determined to stay a bachelor because his career is more important than marriage or parenthood. Kat is the complete opposite, all she dreams about is being a mother after losing her mom at a young age. The two become friends but feelings shortly develop. Kat knows this will only end in heartache with distance and goals that will keep them apart. Kat returns to her New Jersey town and thinks she will never see Julian again as he is off to Germany for a year then back home to Chicago but Julian shows up on Kat’s door after a tragedy in Kat’s life. He is there for her and as they fall more in love Kat can’t be with him knowing her dreams of motherhood will have to end and the two split up determined not to talk to one another again. Five years go by and an emergency appears in Kat’s life needing Julian’s help and to tell him a secret she has been keeping from him that will be the biggest bombshell of his life.
Sound amazing doesn’t it?! Because it is! I seriously want everyone to read this book. I’m afraid to say too much and ruin all the suprises along the way. Events that occurred I just did not see coming and was so happy and also sad for some of them. The book starts off with a heartbroken Kat going to Africa. The first third or so of the book is Kat & Julian in Africa, it is sad but eye opening to read about what is occurring in Africa and how amazing doctors are to dedicate their time for months at a time to help children in need. When Kat returns so early in the book without Julian by her side, I didn’t know what to think of the book. I had no idea where it could go from here but the book became an entirely different type of story after that and I fell in love with it.

The Exception to the Rule is truly a GREAT story. It isn’t all romance; in fact most of the book Kat & Julian are apart from one another but the story has so much more to it then romance, it has a heart and soul. I really loved it, like SO much.

As in love with the ending as I was, I was also so sad Kat & Julian’s story was over. I just want more of them. I thought this story was very well written . I loved ALL the characters in the story as well .
Katrina was a strong willed American Pediatrician . After a break up with her boyfriend of 5 yrs she decides to travel across the globe to Africa and volunteer to help the poor . They both know that what they have has grown into love, but they have a fundamental difference that neither is willing to compromise on. Kat is a family orientated person and Julian, is not and there are no amount of feelings that can persuade either to change their opinions on the subject. So, Julian leaves her with the promise of not trying to get back in contact.
5 yrs later something brings them back together again. Can the love be re-kindled. Can Julian forgive Kat for keeping a secret from him for 5 yrs . I can’t really tell you anymore then that without giving away what the secret is and I do not want to do that to anyone .
What I can say is this book truly is a great story , Beth did an amazing job of writing this story , bringing the characters to life in the story . You will not be disappointed with this story trust me . It is definitely worth the time to read it .

I thought this story was very well written . I loved ALL the characters in the story as well .

My Thoughts:
There is lots about this book that I absolutely loved but also things that interrupted the reading flow for me. As I started the book I felt that the writing was awkward and stilted it didn't flow easily for me and was slightly uncomfortable. . Oh and last criticism ..hated the cover if Bookie hadn't recommended it to me I would not have picked it up.
However, the story was touching and the relationship she had with her father and close friends was wonderful. The family she chose stood by her through thick and thin and really showed their love. The story was crafted in a way that had Kat growing with each emotional hurdle she had to jump. The tragedies that struck were heart wrenching,I felt Kat's bravery as she experienced each one. Julian's anger jumped off the pages and I could feel his frustration. The last several chapters of the book were my favorites and almost pushed the book into the 5 star range. I don't want to say too much because then my whole review would be a spoiler I just want to say that the book itself was excellent. Great story, good characters,minimal editing issues...I think the problems I had with the book is purely personal taste. I would encourage those who love a nice heart wrenching but also heart warming story to read this novel - I know you will love it. In some ways the book reminded me of something Nicholas Sparks would write.
A solid 4 star read for me and I know the readers who enjoy a sentimental, emotional yet romantic read will adore this book.

4 emotional Stars
I stumbled across this title while perusing the books that others have read through my Home page. I will confess to becoming leery of so many 5 star reviews being passed out for so many books, and after I read that book, I simply am shaking my head. I took a chance on this one, and I do not regret it.
Not for a second.
This novel touches on some real world painful situations: loss of a parent;
devastation of sickness in third world countries and the doctors who do their best in horrific situations; and most of all, believing that the one good thing in your life will be removed forever from your life.
This is not a "F*ck yeah, baby" or never-ending sex. It is a novel of maturity, of adults. And I was thankful for this change.
Our story takes us from the wilds of Africa where Kat and others are working to make a difference in the lives of the most impoverished in the world. As doctors, they feel that a certain emotional disconnect must exist in order to maintain their control over their personal emotions. This type of behavior is not easy for Kat. As a pediatrician, her love for children keeps her from being emotionless.
While in Nigeria, she and Julian, a world-renowned pediatric oncologist, meet. I especially enjoyed when they first "met".
"Bored?" the handsome, blue-eyed stranger next to me whispered.
"Yeah, just one more stuffy doctor's speech to get through. I'm sure he's so full of himself that he'll drag it out talking about how great he is." His smile turned into a huge grin as he chuckled.
Yes,it's none other than the famous Dr. Kiron she is dissing. This meeting is the beginning of a friendship and finally, a physical connection they cannot ignore.
Although there is a chemistry between the two, they simply cannot agree on the directions of their lives. They choose to end their relationship based on these differences. Fast forward 5 years and life is very different for Kat in so many ways. There has been no contact whatsoever between these two, but that is about to change in a drastic manner.
I honestly do not want to reveal anything else simply because it would be spoilers. Yes, it is rather easy to figure out where the story goes, but that just did not bother me.
The last two chapters are filled with tears and heart-filled HEA.
I enjoyed this departure from my recent foray into sex-filled college freshmen, and drunken frat parties :) I'm sure I won't be giving those up, but for now, I found this story to be one I truly enjoyed.

I wasn't sure if I should read this one or not. I wasn't sure it was my kind of romance. I read plenty of reviews that said it was a tear jerker and be prepared for the hard stuff. They weren't kidding. Over all, it was an interesting read, but by the time I finished, it felt like something was missing.
This spans quite a few years. From the time that Kat is a baby to a new doctor about ready to leave for Africa for 9 months to 5 years after Africa. For the most part, most of the book is spent on Africa and the 5 years after. Which was interesting. The reason I thought it might not be my type of book was the whole doctor setting. Actually reading about the work they are doing. Mostly because the doctor stuff is way over my head, but as it turns out, none of this was complicated and was all to easy to understand.
I was actually looking forward to reading about Kat's adventure in Africa. I know, she spends most of her time working but there was nothing really to paint the picture she was in another country except for the heat (winter back home) and her hard mattress and sulfur shower. We really only saw three of her patients. I expected more. I expected more about the conditions of the people living there, the poverty, something. It was mostly glossed over to pick out three.
I was just about done reading the book when I realized what I was missing. There isn't much for showing the readers what's going on. It's told. It felt very mechanical in description. Such as, Kat did this, then she did this. She had to pick up this. The only time you really knew what was going on with Kat was through dialogue. The story is told all through Kat's perspective but we don't get to see anything that she's thinking or feeling until it's told through her mouth. There was some pretty heavy stuff that was going on and I think that would have helped to make a connection to the character instead of crying over the idea of it. There are plenty of things that will make me shed a tear just trying to imagine, but if we could have been on the same page as the character, it would have helped to make a better connection.
It was a decent read. And it did make me cry. But I didn't agonize over it like I should have. I finished it last night and I'm already moving on and forgetting.

I'm not sure how to rate this book or even if my current 4 star rating is going to remain. There were things I loved about this book, but other things - not so much. I loved the storyline, the characters & the author's ability to make readers feel her character's emotions right along with them. I never cry when I read books, but I totally did with this one... A couple of times, actually. However - this is the part where I'm struggling with my rating - I feel that there was a lot of filler writing in the story... There were scenes that I didn't feel were pertinent to the storyline & just seemed were there for a higher word count or something. I found myself not really engrossed in those parts of the book & skipping over them... A lot. I feel like the book would have been a 4 star without those scenes & should be rated 3 stars because I felt the need to skip over them, but the author made me cry, which is no small feet.... So, I think I'll rate it 3.5, but give it 4, since there are no half ratings.... For now. I'm going to sleep on it. :-)

Kat, a young physician, reeling from a bad break up heads out a medical mission for nine months in Africa. She is swearing off men and hoping to recover while there. That is, until she meets Dr. Julian Kiron. He hits all her buttons and she has a hard time staying away from him.
She has to leave near the end of her mission unexpectedly.
Thus the story (and the tears) really start.
Kat harbors a secret that she is forced to reveal. There is a lot of heartache in the Exception to the Rule, but plenty of humor to balance it out.
Claire and Charlie, friends of Kat, are great supporting characters.
I want to say more but don't want to give up the plot. I enjoyed this book and having dealt with a few of things going on gave me a better connection with the characters.

I went into this book hoping I would enjoy it because I knew the author was a very nice woman and I really didn't want to be forced to say untrue things just to be nice.
Luckily for me, I absolutely LOVED this book. I started reading it and from page one I did not want to put the book down. The character of Kat immediately attracted me; she was realistic and completely relatable. As she told her story, I felt as if I was hearing the tale being told by a good friend. I felt as much a part of her life as any of the characters in the book.
The story itself drew me in and took me through every emotion in a matter of pages. I laughed and cried out loud. The story ended as it should, but there were a lot of surprises and twists along the way.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes romance or just really good stories. In fact, I think I am going to read it again.

I was in a book slump, so to speak the last little while. Nothing was holding my interest or speaking to me, until I randomly found this book on goodreads. I devoured it in a night because I was so invested in these characters and this story that I had to know what was going to happen. My heart broke so many times with the struggles that they faced. This wasn't an easy, light read. It dealt with emotional topics and things that I wouldn't wish upon anyone. However it all wraps up in a way that mends your heart of all the sadness it endured on this stories journey. 5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book. It had held my interest from start to finish. I found myself getting very emotional during some points of reading it. The story was expressed in a way that made you sympathize with the characters and feel like you were part of the book. I would highly recommend reading this book if you love romance novels or just touching books about life in general.

Amazing!!! I just started this book at 8pm and I could not put it down. I have sat here and read this amazing story in just 4 hours. There where moments when my heart broke for Kat and for Julian too, but oh my what a story worth getting lost in. For all the moments that I cried I had many moments that made me laugh out loud. Wonderful story and I am glad I had a chance to read it. Breath taking.

I had no idea just what I was in for when I began reading The Exception to the Rule, but I admit I didn't want this book to end. From the first page until the last, I was completely immersed into Kat's world ... her ups and her downs. There is so much heart-felt emotion contained in this book and once my tears started falling, they just kept coming. This is a story of secrets, betrayal, loss, love, awakenings, and happy ever afters. I was so engrossed in these characters that I was on the verge of depression, but please don't let that stop you from reading this book. There is a bright light at the end that will have you wanting this story to continue. All of the heart ache and angst I felt throughout the book was rewarded nicely in the last chapter and in the epilogue. This book is certainly the exception to the rule. This review will not be long nor will it be drawn out with a lot of quotes, because it is way too easy to accidentally include spoilers, and this is a story that should be experienced without prior reader knowledge of the events that take place.
The prologue gives us a glimpse of Kat's childhood and the strong sense of family through a simplistic scene of Kat's mother reading her a bedtime story. This bedtime story is the setup for Kat's adult dreams of finding her Prince Charming, "the one" whom every little girl and every adult woman dreams of having a happy ever after with. After spending five years in a relationship with the man she believes is her Prince Charming, Kat is devastated to find another woman in his bed. Her dreams of having a happy family of her own suddenly become something of the past. While Kat had already accepted an opportunity to serve as a pediatrician in a small village in Nigeria, the timing could not be better to help her heal from the loss of her ex. I was amazed and thrilled at the strength of Kat's character and the fact that the author chose not to portray her as a weak victim who drowned herself in self-pity after all she endures throughout the story. Kat was quite the opposite. She had a wonderful support system in her father and her friends, using her opportunities to propel her forward into focusing on what and who really mattered. While she is in Africa, I got a true sense of Kat's character and just how caring and compassionate she is as she tends to the medical needs of children who live in desolation. When Kat is told to attend an important orientation seminar to provide insight into her purpose in serving the children of the barren villages, she meets the handsome pediatric oncologist, Julian Kiron.
Julian is ... well, he's everything. He is handsome, funny, caring, compassionate, and the best in his field.
I had completely fallen for Dr. Julian Kiron and there was no turning back now.
The only problem is that Julian doesn't do relationships. He has experienced hurt before in a relationship, and he has no desire to revisit that pain. Julian is career driven and makes no promises to anyone that he can't keep. He is a man of his word and states up front that his career will always come first. When he meets Kat, the chemistry between them is evident. They become close friends, and both attempt to keep their relationship at the friendship stage and nothing more. This is the point when my heart starts feeling hopeful that these two will come together, and the beautiful Dr. Kiron will abandon his resolve to put career first and change his mind about relationships. Kat knows the score between them, and she is warned by a close friend to not become involved because the result will just be another hurt from the non-committal Julian. Kat has already experienced so much loss in her young life, and she doesn't want to revisit that type of pain. Just when my hopes (and Kat's hopes) for Kat and Julian were becoming realized, Kat receives news that forces her to abandon Julian and any hope for a potential relationship between the two.
I won't take this review any farther in summary because of potential spoilers that would take away the experience that everyone should have in reading The Exception to the Rule. I am truly finding it difficult to find the words to describe this book and the journey it took me on through my emotions. I became close to the characters and they became my own friends. Julian could not be more perfect, and the story line could not be more real as it spans a period of six years in the adult lives of Dr. Katrina Vallia and Dr. Julian Kiron. Their paths cross more than once and each time I am on a roller coaster of emotion experiencing the highness of hope, the stomach-dropping angst, and the sadness of defeat. Kat teaches Julian that there is so much more to life than a career and rules ... sometimes you have to find the exception to the rule and open your eyes to what really matters. Julian teaches Kat that there is always beauty to be found in the ugliest environments and circumstances.
I loved everything about this book and its characters. I felt so much emotion ... the gut-wrenching tears of sadness, angst and fear ... so much fear for my new-found friends, hope for love, and tears of joy. The circumstances experienced by the characters are as real as the emotions I felt while reading about them. Be warned that there is a lot of loss in this story ... the tragedy of cancer, loss of life, suffering of children, and loss from love in this story; but you will experience a happy ever after that will make your journey through tears of sorrow worth the trip. I highly recommend this book and hope that it will receive the recognition it deserves. I implore you to put this one at the top of your reading list, as it receives my high stamp of approval for romance, faith, hope, and discovery.

I had no idea just what I was in for when I began reading The Exception to the Rule, but I admit I didn't want this book to end. From the first page until the last, I was completely immersed into Kat's world ... her ups and her downs. There is so much heart-felt emotion contained in this book and once my tears started falling, they just kept coming. This is a story of secrets, betrayal, loss, love, awakenings, and happy ever afters. I was so engrossed in these characters that I was on the verge of depression, but please don't let that stop you from reading this book. There is a bright light at the end that will have you wanting this story to continue. All of the heart ache and angst I felt throughout the book was rewarded nicely in the last chapter and in the epilogue. This book is certainly the exception to the rule. This review will not be long nor will it be drawn out with a lot of quotes, because it is way too easy to accidentally include spoilers, and this is a story that should be experienced without prior reader knowledge of the events that take place.
The prologue gives us a glimpse of Kat's childhood and the strong sense of family through a simplistic scene of Kat's mother reading her a bedtime story. This bedtime story is the setup for Kat's adult dreams of finding her Prince Charming, "the one" whom every little girl and every adult woman dreams of having a happy ever after with. After spending five years in a relationship with the man she believes is her Prince Charming, Kat is devastated to find another woman in his bed. Her dreams of having a happy family of her own suddenly become something of the past. While Kat had already accepted an opportunity to serve as a pediatrician in a small village in Nigeria, the timing could not be better to help her heal from the loss of her ex. I was amazed and thrilled at the strength of Kat's character and the fact that the author chose not to portray her as a weak victim who drowned herself in self-pity after all she endures throughout the story. Kat was quite the opposite. She had a wonderful support system in her father and her friends, using her opportunities to propel her forward into focusing on what and who really mattered. While she is in Africa, I got a true sense of Kat's character and just how caring and compassionate she is as she tends to the medical needs of children who live in desolation. When Kat is told to attend an important orientation seminar to provide insight into her purpose in serving the children of the barren villages, she meets the handsome pediatric oncologist, Julian Kiron.
Julian is ... well, he's everything. He is handsome, funny, caring, compassionate, and the best in his field.
I had completely fallen for Dr. Julian Kiron and there was no turning back now.
The only problem is that Julian doesn't do relationships. He has experienced hurt before in a relationship, and he has no desire to revisit that pain. Julian is career driven and makes no promises to anyone that he can't keep. He is a man of his word and states up front that his career will always come first. When he meets Kat, the chemistry between them is evident. They become close friends, and both attempt to keep their relationship at the friendship stage and nothing more. This is the point when my heart starts feeling hopeful that these two will come together, and the beautiful Dr. Kiron will abandon his resolve to put career first and change his mind about relationships. Kat knows the score between them, and she is warned by a close friend to not become involved because the result will just be another hurt from the non-committal Julian. Kat has already experienced so much loss in her young life, and she doesn't want to revisit that type of pain. The exception to the rule really draws you in and grips you till very end , so be prepared for a ride on the emotional roller coaster . This is very beautiful but also heartbreaking was close to tears at some parts , was very shocked and surprised witch I really loved love the unexpected . This would be my first books by Beth Rinyu and I know I'll be reading more from her in the future .

This novel is from a new author Beth Rinyu and if this her early work, I cannot wait to see (and read!) what she creates going forward. This book was, at it's heart, a love story. Yes it had lots of swoon-worthy romance, but when I say love I mean love from all angles. Love for family, love for friends, even love for essential strangers.
The book starts off with the main character Kat getting burned by her boyfriend- which ends up being the catalyst for pretty much the storyline of this book. She decides she needs to get away, so enrolls in a volunteer program that sends her to Africa for 9 months to immerse herself in the occupation she loves: Pediatrician. She gets there and dives headfirst into treating her young patients. The climate in Africa is heartbreaking. The children are in need of care and for some patients that Kat treats their futures look bleak. She is concentrating on how to help her children in the middle of an introductory meeting/conference and she distractingly meets the handsome Dr. Julian Kiron, a keynote speaker, by pretty much insulting him. From that point on she continues running into him and her attraction towards him intensifies. Being a pediatric oncologist, he treats some of the worst cases and both he and Kat bond over mutual victories and losses. He's made it clear that he doesn't do relationships and she doesn't do casual, but they can't stop what builds between them, even if they wanted to (and despite both of their adamant claims, they really do want whatever it is that forms). Just as they are realizing that what they have goes beyond simple chemistry, tragedy occurs forcing Kat to head back home early to her family. But despite the distance Julian doesn't simply fade away. He calls her weekly to check up on her and he even makes a surprise visit to her before he goes away on his next assignment in Germany. They both know that what they have has grown into love, but they have a fundamental difference that neither is willing to compromise on. Kat is a family orientated person and Julian, well, is not and there are no amount of feelings that can persuade either to change their opinions on the subject. So, Julian leaves her with the promise of not trying to get back in contact.
Fast forward five years. And this is where I have to stop talking. There is nothing that I can really say that won't give anything away and I really don't want to do that. All I can really say about the remainder of the book is that it is a emotional roller coaster. Julian comes back into the fold of Kat's life in a very unexpected way. You fall in love with Kat and Julian and the strong supporting characters that Kat has surrounding her as close as a family. You find yourself right along with them with every up and down ride that is taken. When they laugh, you laugh and when they cry, you are completely balling your eyes out. Amazing and wonderful story. Please do not let the cover put you off (I know it looks a little...mehh) this is something that needs to be picked up immediately.

Excellent!! So many turns I did not see coming. Could not put it down once halfway through.
