Timo Parvelan valloittava tarinakokoelma lumoaa koko perheen.
The Odd Couple was a play by Neil Simon. Frog and Toad are Friends was about two characters trying to be friends, even though they weren't the same. Winnie the Pooh and Piglet didn't always agree, but they were friends, just the same.
It sometimes is fun to put two people that are very different together to see what happens. I believe that was what the author this book was shooting for.
Prudy the cat is artistic and wants to make art, and relax in the sun and think of poems, and throw parties for no reason.
Barker the dog feels he needs to do the things that have to be done. He has to shovel the snow, or insulate the house, or chop the firewood.
And although this sounds like a cute and cleaver idea for a book, it was dull and boring instead. I had sympathy for Barker, as that is part of who I am. Things have to be done. But I am also a bit like Prudy, in that fun has to be had sometimes. I felt like neither of them were really a whole person.
So, good idea, but failed at execution, though there were a few bright spots, such as when Barker humored Prudy about being able to bicycle to the moon.
I think most kids would get bored with this pretty quickly.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Äkkiä on vuosi kulunut erilaisten sattumusten parissa.
Like many other chapter books, this book contains 20 chapters that are all really individual stories about the same characters. Purdy (a cat) and Barker (a dog) are best friends, and they live together at the top of the hill. In the first chapter they Barker gets the idea that he can bike to the moon. Purdy is a loyal friend, and he buys the bike Barker has been wanting and agrees to go with him, so his friend doesn't drown in the lake. Of course, they don't make it to the moon.
In the other chapters they play soccer, go fishing, have a tomato war, attempt to migrate like the birds, etc. Purdy and Barker are an unusual pair of friends, but they're good for each other. Purdy likes to play and thinks a good day is one in which he reads or paints. Barker works hard tending his garden. And though the pair often butt heads, they do care about each other a lot. Barker makes Purdy's breakfast and Purdy wants to teach Barker the correct way to fish. They're like an old married couple, set in their ways.
These stories are a little odd for a kids' book. And each story has a subtle message, some perhaps too subtle. Most chapters' morals were obvious, i.e. not bragging, apologizing, thinking before acting, or avoiding overconfidence or perfectionism. But I had to think hard about a couple of chapters, and I'm not sure kids would understand the intended meaning or some of the humor.
For kids who enjoy contemporary stories, this book might be an OK read. The chapters are short, so the stories can be digested chapter by chapter, night by night. But the content isn't the greatest especially given the imbalance between reading level/length and the subject matter and language. Sadly, I didn't really like this book. I think it's the children's equivalent of a character-driven novel. Just not my thing.
This charming title from Finland and first published in New Zealand features a dog named Barker who is the most patient of friends and a cat named Purdy who tends to think only of himself. Each of the chapters focuses on the relationship, which sometimes can be quite strained. And yet, deep down, each of these animals loves the other one. In the very first chapter, "Bicycling to the Moon," Purdy becomes convinced that life will be perfect if he can ride his bike to the moon. But first he needs a bike, and then he needs to learn how to ride the bike. When he prepares to ride the bike along the moon's glow on the lake, his revelation that he can't swim prompts Barker to go along with him to prevent anything tragic from occurring. All of the occurrences are similar to this, touching in some ways but also humorous in others since it's clear that Purdy really doesn't realize what a great and steadfast friend Barker is. The colorful illustrations enhance the stories quite nicely while the stories themselves and Purdy himself reminds me of the picture book My Friend Rabbit. Sometimes it seems that some of us enjoy playing and dreaming our lives away while others draw pleasure from working hard. While I enjoyed the book a lot, much of their behavior became predictable quite quickly, which might detract from the enjoyment of some readers.
This collection of short episodes features Purdy, a scheming, lazy cat and hard-working, long suffering Barker the dog. Together they live in a sky-blue house on top of a hill.
Classified as Junior Fiction, these stories will appeal to readers of all ages. They are great read aloud tales integrating humour, life lessons to be learned, coping with relationships, making decisions, as well as celebrating life's odd moments.
Timo Parvela is Finland's top children's author who has twice been shortlisted for the Astrid Lindgren Award. His mastery of ‘catness’ and ‘dogness’, selfishness and self-sacrifice, is delightful.
Virpi Talvitie's quirky full-colour illustrations on cream paper complement the stories. Her skill as an illustrator has resulted in two previous nominations for the Hans Christian Anderson Award.
Julia Marshall of Gecko Press describes this book as, “Curiously good”.
A cat and a dog live as the most ill-fitting pair of friends in a blue house on a hill. The dog is all industry, forethought, duty, hard work doing all the housework, crop-growing, maintenance, etc, while the cat is sheer fun – with a sense of silliness, and at the same time some quite misguided ideas. The chapters in this book cover arrogance, hubris, accidents, this bit of cleverness and that bit of silliness, and hubris again. In actual fact there are possibly too many of these linked short stories, for the book is quite a dense read for the young. The illustrations are fine, the stories are all well-crafted, different enough and enjoyable – it just seems at times there is content enough for two whole books, meaning this one seems over-stuffed. But I'm sure people will like it, if not only for the value that brings to its purchase.
I was attracted to this quirky book by its beautiful presentation, enhanced by Virpi Talvitie’s wonderful illustrations. I didn’t know what age group it was directed at, so I decided to read it myself and was quickly absorbed into the world of Barker (dog) and Purdy (cat).
That age range? 5 year olds will love having it read aloud. 8-12s will enjoying reading it themselves and understand more about the relationship issues that it addresses. Adults will enjoy reading it and recognise universal truths in the behaviours of these friends. A book that has the potential to become a much-loved classic.
Along with Tales of an Extraordinary Hamster, I really hope this book becomes a modern day kids' classic. Funny, poignant and even a bit dark, it entertained me more than many adult books I have read. I think it would be suited to a class serial, where each chapter was read, dissected and discussed over a period of time as there is a sense of some repetition. However, some of the chapters would make for fascinating discussions, particularly my favourite, Fishing. Couldn't recommend highly enough.
Purdy the cat and Barker the dog are good friends but have very different personalities: Purdy is spontaneous and a little lazy, and Barker is a planner and very organized. Parvela writes the friends' interactions and conflicts in an age-appropriate manner for the child reader/listener but also makes them very true-to-life - Parvela respects children's keen social intelligence.
I hope more of Timo Parvela's books get transated into English! This is the only one so far. Virpi Talvitie's illustrations are also wonderful.
Had such high hopes for this little book with the full Colour illustrations on some inside pages.
Turned out to be an utterly depressing volume of short stories about a conceited, lazy, exploitative and selfish cat who calls himself a friend. Barker the dog should flee from this abusive relationship where he is routinely bullied and manipulated to no end.
This is definitely a tale of emotional blackmail and abuse and I want Barker to get out of it now! Argh.
PROS 1.) This book has short stories that are chapters, which is really cool and nice. 2.) Very nice characters. 3.) Very interesting plot 4.) Good drawings CONS 1.) Prudy was very mean/annoying sometimes, which made me mad. 2.) Sometimes I felt as if there were some dull moments in the book
All in all I would've given this book a 4.5 rating.
What fun. Perfect for lower elementary starting their first chapter books or Readalouds. Purdy the Cat and Barker the dog with their own fully developed characters and personalities shine in this lightly ironical Book
