Jo Ham’s Rabbit picture book series is an international sensation. This is the third in her Rabbit series of silly foibles with a rabbit. From a paint can with spills to a sand castle destroyed by a big wave to a tub overflowing with bubbles Rabbit makes a few mistakes and accidents are bound to happen.
With black silhouette drawings, spots of pink, and minimal words, young children will soon be able to read along including saying OOPS! Rabbit’s final scene has him trying to grab a cake on the counter. Oops! Don’t worry, it still got eaten!
This simple picture book is great for kids who are learning to sit for a picture book and one they will easily be able to read themselves once the few words are learned. This whole series of Rabbit books is quite popular in Paris and Ham’s Rabbit designs can be found on all kinds of items. The endpapers are all full of Rabbit doing all kinds of fun activities.
This very simple picture book is the third in a series, following Uh-Oh! Rabbit and Yippee! Rabbit. Using black silhouette images with pink highlights, Ham shows us a rabbit going about its day, getting into a variety of trouble involving the rabbit being ON different objects, and then falling OFF. Rabbit stands on a chair and draws pictures on the wall, builds a sandcastle only to have the tide wash it away, takes a bath with way too many bubbles, and manages to pull over a cake that is sitting on a table. This, however, ends fairly happily with the rabbit munching on a piece of cake with pink frosting.
With its high contrast style sensory images, this is a good choice for very young children. The vocabulary is very limited, with some pages just containing the word "Oops!". The end papers are especially charming, with vignettes from the book turned into a pattern, with pink images on a black background.
This seems like the type of picture book one might find in the gift shop of art or design museums, and will be perfect for parents who like the stylized aesthetic of Hokkanen's Kitty and Cat: Opposites Attract or Coat's Comparrotives.
Who cannot but love this adorable silhouette of a rabbit that just embodies life with all its ups and downs. This curious rabbit travels though life experiencing everything within its reach and yes sometimes accidents happen and sometimes accidents come with a delicious piece of cake at the end! My mom used to take us to the ice cream shop to have sundaes for dinner on the nights that life just got in the way for her and I feel a kinship with this rabbit. Rabbit offers lessons on life for all ages. Because accidents happen to all of us. We should try to find the beauty and acceptance in all of these accidents and then move on, continue to be curious, continue to explore and continue to reward yourself just because it will make you feel better. I love the bold black and pink coloring-the pink just poops off the pages and the simple silhouettes are easy to understand and do offer a good chance to chuckle, a lot!
Come along on the adventures of a mischievous rabbit. Shown in a variety of situations, he is either causing, or in, trouble. The author both wrote and illustrated the story.
The rabbit is shown doing some very bad things such as drawing on the walls, or knocking over a fancy cake on a stand, and then eating it. Hopefully, that will not influence little ones to do that, too. It never shows the rabbit being punished for anything.
This tale is often told with the changing of the art and the three colors: black, white, and pink. The volume itself is a cute, almost square, little hard-backed book.
This four-star picture book is geared toward babies and children to three-years-old.
Thank you, Candlewick Press, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own
Ham’s simple monochromatic rabbit is set off by flashes of neon pink in this little picture book. With only a few words – Rabbit on, Oops and Rabbit off Ham manages to create a charming collection of visual vignettes. Rabbit starts by coloring on walls in bright pink paint climbing onto and falling off of a chair. Next Rabbit is planting a bright pink flag on a sandcastle when Oops – the waves wash it away. Rabbit enjoys a bath with (oops) too many pink bubbles and finally Rabbit oops a cake off the table and into their mouth.
I think caregivers and toddlers will enjoy the silly situations and the striking graphics, my one complaint is that the picture book itself is 7x7” which is small for a library storytime read-a-loud, but will be great for a more intimate kid/caregiver lapsit.
The text of this picture book consists entirely of the repeated phrases "Rabbit on.", "Oops!", and "Rabbit off," which depict a rabbit having a series of accidents in addition to teaching the opposites on/off. The illustrations are tricolor -- black, white, and pink -- and silhouette.
Repeated phrases allow readers to anticipate what will happen next and participate in the story.
This is one of those picture books that must be test-driven by kids. After this first reading, I don't get it. On and off are not clearly presented. Rabbit on shows a rabbit building a sand castle in silhouette. The Oops is a wave. Rabbit off shows a similar silhouette except the castle's flag is dented and the rabbit is sitting ON the remains of the castle. This is the most clear and it's still a shrug.
In Oops! Rabbit the mischievous rabbit reprises his role from Uh-Oh! Rabbit, start out turning things on or being on top of them, only to disastrously hilarious results. Stark black and white plus a dash of bright pink will grab little ones' attention and Rabbit's antics will make them laugh. A very cute follow-up to Uh-Oh! Rabbit!
Simple black, white, and pink illustrations show the action in this nearly wordless picture book. Rabbit starts by climbing on a chair to draw on the walls, then, oops! rabbit falls off. It will be an engaging book for early readers who can memorize the repetitive words and then "read" to themselves over and over. It's very simple and very fun!
4 stars I read a digital review courtesy of the publisher and edelweiss A rascally rabbit seen only in shadow has a few oopsy adventures where he is on and off. The two color palette makes the mistakes seem like vibrant choices rather than something to feel sorrow about.
Simple and perfect for toddlers. This picture book uses black and white silhouette illustrations with contrasting splashes of neon pink color. Almost like a bunny-centric Harold and the Purple Crayon. This is a contrast and opposites book that celebrates making mistakes -- oops!
Jo Ham brings lots of laughs as she shares the mishaps of rabbit! "Oops!" It's one to "see" so you can predict, then see all those "Oops!" that happen. Brief text, funny pages, kids will love predicting! Thanks to Candlewick Press for this copy!
Oh those mischievous bunnies! Paint, sand, bubbles, and cake! Toddlers will love following bunny's thought process. And seeing the trouble created. I loved the pink and black palette, also. Just sweet, simple fun for toddlers.
This is a sweet and simple book about opposites. Rabbit is on and then oops! he's off. Recommended for ages 2-5 by the SEPA School Library Book Reviewers.
