Merlin AU - 17,501 words complete
AU. Arthur looks away from the terrified, accusing dark eyes of the man on the newspaper, and turns his attention to his breakfast.

Notes:
[Originally posted on LJ April 2009] Loosely - and I mean loosely - inspired by Watchmen, because I love Merlin-people-as-superheroes AUs. This universe wouldn't work if Uther wasn't clichéd and evil, but it still makes me sad that I had to go there. Other than that, yeah, this is one of my superhero AUs, and gosh, can't believe it's been like three years since I wrote it, damn.

For a story about superheroes, this was surprisingly sad. I just felt so bad for Arthur and the way his life had gone and the lies that he had to tell himself to keep believing that his dad was a good person. So sad!

And his romances with both Merlin and Emrys didn't do anything at all to change the emotional tenor of the story. At one point in the narration we're told, "Merlin doesn't want him and Emrys has used him and Arthur is bloody tired." Sad!

Still intriguing with the superhero elements, just not fun like I'd expected a superhero story to be.

Favorite Quotes:
and the inadequate coffee adds itself to the list of Things That Are Crap About Arthur's Life At The Moment.

Merlin spends so much time being deferential that Arthur's always assumed Merlin was shorter than him.

"It's just that you've been starved of love all your life and so you don't know how to interpret friendship mixed with a little bit of lust."

and Arthur does not have to deal with his emotions if he doesn't want to.
