Newlyweds Lord and Lady Astley Finally Reach Their Honeymoon Destination Only to Encounter a New Mystery in Need of Solving
Frederick and Grace Percy finally make it to Italy to enjoy a delayed honeymoon and explore the beauties of the historic city of Venice. To their surprise, their friend, Detective Jack Miracle, is also in the city, investigating a series of art heists starting at the house of eccentric millionaire, Laraby Covington. Drawn into a world of boat races, mysterious houses, and parties of the rich and unusual in Venice, Frederick and Grace learn of the existence of the Juliet paintings, (Renaissance paintings feature Shakespeare’s tragic heroine) rumored to hold a secret code to an underground vault of similarly treasured artwork assumed lost over the centuries. As Freddie and Grace are pulled deeper into the mystery and their beloved Detective Jack disappears, can they use their wits and work as a team to find the thieves and Jack before it’s too late.
The Juliet Code is a Freddie and Grace Mystery, sequel to The Mistletoe Countess and The Cairo Curse.
Pepper D Basham has been telling tales ever since she was a little girl. When her grandmother called her a “writer” at the age of ten, Pepper took it as gospel and has enjoyed various types of writing styles ever since. A native of the Blue Ridge Mountains, mom of five, speech-language pathologist, and lover of chocolate, Pepper enjoys sprinkling her native Appalachian culture into her fiction wherever she can. She currently resides in the lovely mountains of Asheville, NC, where she works with kids who have special needs, searches for unique hats, and plots new ways to annoy her wonderful friends at her writing blog, The Writer’s Alley.
The Freddie & Grace Mysteries series is such a delight to read. I love Frederick and Grace and the flirty, lighthearted, humorous relationship they have with the love and faith that they have. In this third of the series, their honeymoon has moved on to Venice where they run into their friend, Detective Jack.Miracle, Jack talks them into helping him with working with a client who has had some artwork stolen from a gallery in Venice. The Juliet paintings are part of a set of paintings painted by a local artist and are based on Romeo and Juliet's story. Everyone who has owned a painting has died a tragic death. Thus starts a wild adventure with twists, turns, danger, and intrigue, one with characters who are not who they say they are and with a sinister motive. I highly recommend this book and whole series for those who enjoy historical suspense with a romantic flair and touch of humor and faith interspersed. I was given a copy for the purpose of an honest review. All thoughts are mine only.
What dear fictional friends! I would follow Freddie and Grace anywhere (not literally due to their propentisty to encounter perilous situations but 100% fictionally). This sleuthing adventure takes place in Italy as the Percys continue their honeymoon in a most unconventional (and entertaining) fashion. From a hijacked gondola to cryptic clues, F&G's delightful relationship continues to blossom and mature as they exhange affectionate banter, warm embraces, and sweet kisses too. Fans will be happy to know there are new lessons to be learned and plenty of rope. Basham also introduces readers to a new friend or two that I hope to see much more of in future stories. I highly recommend The Juliet Code and encourage readers to pick up The Mistletoe Countess and The Cario Curse as well!
Oh, my heart! It's so exciting to be reunited with swoony Freddie and adorable Grace once again. The series is full of adventure, danger, thieves, and murderers with a mystery romance that has the best chemistry. It's a delightful story in every way!
The characters are wonderful and seem so real that they jump off the page. Frederick and Grace make a terrific couple, and they find themselves drawn into a world of boat races, mysterious houses, and unusual parties in Venice. As they learn about the Juliet paintings, which are rumored to hold a secret code to an underground vault of similarly treasured artwork lost over the centuries, they get pulled deeper into the mystery. When their beloved Detective Jack disappears, can Freddie and Grace use their wits and work together to find the thieves and Jack before it's too late?
“Being afraid doesn’t mean you’re not brave… It’s what you do when you’ve afraid that proves your bravery."
There are several unexpected plot twists with humorous moments throughout the story as some characters are not who they claim to be. Readers who love historical fiction with a bit of romance and mystery will enjoy this book. Recommend it.
Thank you, NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
The Juliet Code by Pepper Basham 4 Stars I really enjoyed being back with Freddie and Grace in another adventure together! In book 3 of the series, we see our couple finally reach their honeymoon destination in Italy! However, as things would have it, they are back to sleuthing in a new mystery that needs to be solved.
This series is always a fun time and full of adventure and makes for a great romantic mystery with some nice faith content along the way. As usual with Pepper's books, the characters truly make the story SO great. I love Freddie and Grace and their interactions together are top notch. Add a little humor and mystery and you have a great story!
While The Mistletoe Countess remains my favorite in the series, books 2 and 3 have been an absolute blast as we followed their journeys in Egypt and Italy! We see them traveling through Venice when they meet up with a friend, Detective Jack Miracle. Jack is investigating a series of art heists surrounding the Juliet paintings and Freddie and Grace work to help out.
Overall a great 3rd book in the series and if you love a light mystery with a little bit of romance, check this series out! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy to honestly read and review.
I adore this series and Book 3 is pure delight. My fav mystery duo, married couple Freddie and Grace, head to Italy for their belated honeymoon and find themselves swept up in uncovering the forces behind an art heist. I couldn't resist their genuine chemistry, the mystery that kept me guessing, and a strong Christian message that brought me joy. Can be read solo but I suggest reading Books 1 & 2 for complete reading pleasure. Highly recommended!
I highly recommend readers of historical fiction romance to step into the enchanting world of Venice, where Pepper Basham masterfully weaves a tale of mystery, romance, and faith in The Juliet Code, the third installment of the Freddie and Grace Mystery series. Against the picturesque backdrop of Venice's winding canals and historic architecture, Basham crafts a story that effortlessly combines humor, romance, and suspense, leaving readers completely captivated.
The story unfolds as newlyweds, Lord Frederick and Lady Grace Astley, embark on their honeymoon in the romantic city of Venice. What begins as a dreamy escape quickly transforms into a thrilling adventure when their friend Detective Jack Miracle invites them to assist in solving the mystery of missing Juliet paintings. As the trio delves into a murderous treasure hunt, Basham skillfully intertwines the couple's deepening love with a suspenseful plot that brims with red herrings and unexpected twists.
Grace, a book-loving and adventurous character, takes center stage as she embraces her role as a detective with zeal and humor. Her infectious enthusiasm for life adds a unique and delightful flair to the narrative. The banter and romantic chemistry between Frederick and Grace sparkle off the pages, creating a magnetic connection that resonates with readers.
Set against the intriguing world of art theft and hidden treasures, The Juliet Code keeps readers guessing from the first page to the last. The cleverly crafted mystery, filled with twists and turns, maintains a perfect balance between complexity and accessibility. Basham's ability to introduce new characters seamlessly into the existing ensemble adds depth and anticipation for future adventures.
The book is not merely a suspenseful mystery; it is a testament to Basham's skill in infusing faith into her storytelling. The mentions of God are honest, sincere, and organically integrated into the characters' conversations, enriching the narrative with an eternal perspective. The Christian elements add a layer of authenticity to the characters' lives, making them relatable and endearing.
Grace and Frederick's relationship, portrayed with flirty romance and genuine connection, evolves beautifully as their love deepens amid the challenges they face. The addition of Detective Jack Miracle and the introduction of a side romance enhance the overall richness of the story, leaving readers eagerly anticipating future adventures.
Pepper Basham's versatility shines as she seamlessly transitions from genres, delivering a historical mystery that is both engaging and heartwarming. The Juliet Code is a rare gem, combining the charm of Venice, the allure of a mystery, and the most important aspect of our lives, faith, into an unforgettable reading experience. This book is not just a 5-star read; it's a captivating journey that leaves readers longing for more extraordinary escapades with Freddie and Grace.
I received an eARC for The Juliet Code from Barbour Fiction through NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on this story’s excellent content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
Story Enjoyment Rating: 8.5/10 Christian Faith Rating: 3/3
The Juliet Code by Pepper Basham is the third book in the Frederick and Grace Mysteries series. It is a fun historical mystery with Christian content. The story follows Frederick and Grace on their honeymoon in Venice, where they unexpectedly encounter their detective friend, Jack. Jack involves them in a mystery surrounding a series of paintings about Juliet that have gone missing. Tasked with finding the paintings and protecting the remaining ones, Jack enlists Frederick and Grace's help.
I enjoyed the mystery—it was fun and exciting to follow, though a bit complicated and confusing at times. Seeing the story from Frederick and Grace's perspectives again was a highlight. I really like their characters, fun personalities, and the dynamic of their relationship. As a married couple, their romance did get a bit too spicy for my taste at times, but the book primarily focused on the mystery rather than the romance.
It's probably best to read these books in order, as while this book doesn't spoil the mysteries in the previous two, the personal story continues from one book to the next. The Christian faith content in this book is strong, with scripture references and the characters' faith significantly influencing their decisions and, therefore, the plot.
“Because courage isn’t about being fearless. It’s about choosing to do something when we are afraid.”
Another thrilling, romantic Freddie and Grace mystery! I love this duo. Their charm, wit, and delicious romance make them a favorite sleuthing couple. I’ve been eagerly anticipating their next adventure since The Cairo Curse and found The Juliet Code thoroughly entertaining. This latest mystery takes them to Italy where the newlyweds are hoping to enjoy their honeymoon. But, life wouldn’t be complete without Grace stumbling into a mystery, so when their friend Jack Miracle shows up in Venice investigating an art heist, Grace and Freddie find themselves involved in another case.
The stolen series of Juliet paintings based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet are meant to lead to a hidden treasure. Jack is investigating the heist of one of the paintings owned by an eccentric millionaire and involves Grace and Freddie. They find themselves on the millionaire’s remote island with plenty of suspects, a ghost, and of course danger and mystery.
I loved the house party atmosphere reminiscent of Agatha Christie. The remote island location provides the perfect scene for a murder mystery where one feels a sense of being trapped. Coupled with that is a mansion containing secret rooms and passageways.
Freddie and Grace are their adorable selves. Grace’s bubbly enthusiasm is contagious. She definitely has a knack for solving mysteries but finds herself in the middle of danger. Freddie is right there along with her. While he appreciates his new wife’s talents, he’s learning to trust her and let go of his overprotective tendencies. I loved how they grew more as a couple in this story. Grace has some understandable fears and I loved seeing Freddie help her deal with those. I loved their banter, humor, swoonworthy sweet romance, and faith. The side characters in this story are just as endearing. I loved Jack and can’t wait to see more of him and his hopefully new female assistant.
The mystery was definitely full of twists and turns with a few red herrings along the way. It was a clever plot and I loved how the paintings contained clues to the treasure. While I had my suspicions of who the “bad guys” were, there were some definite surprises.
If you’re short on reading time, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life. I love how she interjects just the right amount of emotion and really brings out the characters’ personality, especially Grace and Freddie.
Now I can’t wait for the next adventure! Highly recommend to historical romance/mystery fans and inspirational mystery fans. While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. However, the first two books are must reads and I recommend reading them too. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher but also purchased the audiobook version. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
Another fun adventure with Freddie and Grace! Continuing on from book two, the pair finally gets to enjoy their honeymoon in Italy, but is interrupted by a surprise encounter with a friend from home, who needs their help on a case. Plenty of romance, a mystery with a cast full of suspicious characters, and an adventure involving a treasure hunt made this a delightful read. Grace seems to attract trouble wherever she goes, and Freddie has to learn to trust her more. I liked how they grew in faith and matured as a couple in this book. They lean on each other and God as the danger grows. Overcoming fear from past traumas is a deep issue for Grace. She shows great courage, and still gives others help when needed. She and Freddie made a good team. Hoping there will be more adventures to follow! Recommend to readers who enjoy lighter mysteries with romance and faith. 4.5 stars

The Juliet Code contains the further adventures of Lord and Lady Astley that began with the Mistletoe Countess. I am going to date myself by saying they remind me of the the old Hart to Hart tv series, the beginning monologue stated that "When they met, it was murder." I love Grace's enthusiasm for life. She has certainly turned Lord Astley's life upside down, but somehow I think he is happy that she has stirred things up. I really enjoy reading all of Grace and Freddie's adventures, even if they continually stumble into rough situations.
So brew up a pot of tea, grab a cozy blanket, and settle in for a great adventure!
I was given a copy of The Juliet Code with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.
This one was just as excellent as the last two. I love this couple! They did manage to get through this one without officially adopting anyone - which is impressive, knowing Grace. I need someone to analyze why I adore these books but can't like a character like Grace anywhere else, because it is something special. Usually a character like her would drive me bonkers in the long run, but I remain delighted (and Freddie is great, too, of course).
“Surely God knew exactly what He’d been doing when He bound Frederick to this darling woman in marriage, didn’t He? Was it some sort of cosmic trust exercise?”
Frederick Percy, Lord Astley, is slowly coming to the conclusion that his life as a newly married earl will involve much more adventure and sleuthing than he would have chosen. Lady Astley, Grace, is delighted to have their honeymoon turn into one murderous adventure after another, finding great exhilaration and satisfaction in the happenings.
Pepper Basham brings back one of my favorite fictional detective couples from the Mistletoe Countess and The Cairo Curse. It’s best to read the series in sequence to get the most enjoyment from this seemingly mismatched couple. Britain Freddy, hurt and lonely from his childhood, is the antithesis of American Grace, who is bookish, yet social, and impulsive. When the couple teams up with their detective friend Jack to find the missing Juliet paintings, confusion, and delusion, and danger abound.
Grace and Frederick communicate in sparkling repartée. Their conversation sizzles while remaining a clean read. As they learn more about each other, they learn how they complement each other and encourage each other to grow in their faith. Frederick encourages Grace with her fears, “And when you feel your courage is small, He is quite capable to lend you some of His.” Grace’s impetuosity will either cause Frederick to become overprotective of her, or learn to trust God.
I recommend this novel for those who appreciate historical romance, mystery , and humor intertwined with faith.
I received a copy of the book through Celebrate Lit via NetGalley. I also bought my own paperback for my keeper shelf. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“I know we haven’t the power to change the world, but we can start in our little corner where God places us. To help right wrongs. Bring about justice and mercy. Sprinkle joy where it’s needed.”
“It was quite delightful to think of herself as a character in God’s book instead of just a wandering character without an author or book at all. In fact, if He wrote her days and she was trying to love Him and others well, then she had all the reason in the world to live bravely, didn’t she?”
I love these Freddie and Grace mysteries so much! Grace is such a spunky and full of life character! I love her excitement for adventure and for life. She brings so much excitement and joy to Freddie, and she also can bring a lot of heart palpitations too! Hahaha! Poor Freddie. But at least there's never a dull moment for these two. And secretly Freddie loves it all...well I think he does! ;-)
These two keep trying to enjoy a quiet vacation and honeymoon together, but unfortunately trouble finds Grace, or is it that Grace gravitates to trouble (or should I say adventure?). But it definitely makes for a fun reading adventure.
I loved all of the twists and turns. I kept making guesses and adjusting my guesses due to the twists and turns. And don't think you know who is who because again...surprises and twists and turns.
Jack goes missing, there's danger around every corner, searching for missing paintings, trying to decide who they can trust, wishing for time to be real tourists and do some sightseeing all while trying to keep each other safe. Add to that some sweet and clean romance and you've got a great read that kept this reader turning pages!
If you haven't read the previous two books in this series, I highly encourage you to do so because they're great. But you could read this one as a standalone if you absolutely must! ;-)
Content: Clean. Some moments of mild peril. Sweet and clean romance with nothing further than kisses.
I received a copy from the author/publisher, Barbour Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
*2025 reread*: I still loved this, and I'm so excited for book 4 this year! Grace and Freddie are such a dynamic duo, and their romantic mysteries are always the best sort of adventure. "I know we haven't the power to change the world, but we can start in our little corner where God places us. To help right wrongs. Bring about justice and mercy. Sprinkle joy where it's needed."-Grace Percy
Loved this, didn't want it to end... blah blah blah. 🙃 Unsurprisingly, I ADORED this book. Where to begin? The Italian setting was bellissimo, and I'm 100% going there one day! The cast of characters was exciting and diverse as always, and Frederick's character growth with Grace's usual Graceness totally rocked. I may have to get into parasol fighting sometime. 😉 Also, the suspense and mystery in this was next level (I got the spooky chills). The crowning glory to this whole thing was definitely Frederick and Grace's journey in giving up control to God, seeing Him write their stories in His book, and acknowledging that they're always in His grip of grace no matter the trial. No matter what, God sees you, knows you, loves you; and He makes no mistakes. So keep spreading hope, mercy, justice, and joy! I've needed to be reminded of that lately, and I love that I found encouragement in this book. I wouldn't change a thing about this book; it was perfection. 🙌Psalm 139:16-17/ Romans 15:13❤
The Juliet Code is the third book featuring Lord and Lady Astley by Ms. Basham. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series of amateur sleuths and their adventures. This book has them in Venice on their honeymoon and of course mystery and mayhem seem to follow them there. I enjoyed this book not only because the characters are so likeable, but also because there is romance and a mystery to be solved. I really hope there will be more romps.of adventures in the future. *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher, and this is my honest opinion.
Audiobook (narrated by Pamela Klein) A sweet, romantic mystery. Sweet—but with more than one dead body part of the mix. Anyway, this was a fun new adventure. The first book in this series remains my favorite, but Freddie and Grace’s adventures are just as engaging in this third book.
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Loved it. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = Liked it. Glad I read it. 2🌟 = The book was okay, but I’ve enjoyed others so much more. 1🌟 = I didn’t like it and can’t recommend it.
A delightful romp! The perfect blend of romcom and suspense, with a sweet faith thread woven throughout. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and found the continuation of Freddie and Grace's story to be utterly delightful. I think one of the draws for me is that readers can see a couple after their happily-ever-after, with plenty of romantic chemistry that sizzles off the page, as their love deepens and strengthens.
Set against the atmospheric setting of Venice as a beautiful backdrop, I was intrigued by the mystery of the missing paintings. With the clock ticking on a murderous treasure hunt, readers will be entertained by Grace's zeal for adventure as she revels in her role as detective. I was captivated by the red herrings and plot twists from the first to last page. With a wonderful cast 0f characters that continues to grow, I am looking forward to reading more of their adventures in the future.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher thorough Netgalley and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Juliet Code is the third installment of Pepper Basham’s Freddie & Gracie Mystery series and, oh my word, the adventure, the danger, the romance. It has it all. Grace is probably my favorite character from Pepper’s imagination. No spoilers, but I believe that we haven’t seen the last of these mysteries. At least I hope there are more coming. If you haven’t started this series, what are you waiting for? It’s fabulous!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions expressed are completely my own.
The Juliet Code is one entertaining mystery overflowing with twists and turns and plenty of romance! 5 stars!
Pepper Basham has outdone herself and I couldn't have enjoyed the exploits of Freddie and Grace more. Even though the couple's honeymoon takes them to Venice, Italy, it's not your ordinary honeymoon! Grace fancies herself a detective and can't seem to help herself when a chance to solve a mystery arises. Freddie, in his utter devotion to her tags along, one part exasperation and another in admiration.
I love the way Grace's mind works and the way she expresses herself. I've noted so many great lines,
"It was quite delightful to think of herself as a character in God's book instead of just a wandering character without an author or book at all." "I know we haven't the power to change the world, but we can start in our little corner where God places us."
I can hardly wait for the next installment of "adventures with Freddie and Grace". And lastly, huge applause to the art department for such a gorgeous cover that so beautifully reflects the story. I appreciate Barbour Publishing making a copy of The Juliet Code available for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.
This was my favorite book of the series so far (🙏🏻that there are more)! The mystery was my favorite kind, including the history of the Juliet paintings and Accardi; and there were so many disguises and false identities and character growth. I just loved it all!
I simply cannot get enough of Freddie and Grace! I want so many more books in this series! This newest installment gives us more of what we've come to expect from a Freddie & Grace mystery: faith, swoony romance, a fun adventure, humor, and fabulous side-characters! It is so refreshing to see a couple in CF that is married and navigating what that looks like. And getting to see them grow as a couple, as well as individually, is a treat. The friendship between Freddie and Jack in this one was a delight - oh the sarcasm and teasing! So much fun! I do hope Jack gets a series of his own because I'd love to know what's in store for him. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you should pick up this series!
Grace and Frederick are excited to spend their honeymoon together in Venice, they are surprised to find their dear friend Jack already there and in need of their help with a current case.
Swept into a another adventure filled mystery, newlyweds Grace and Frederick must use their skills to unravel what is happening to the missing paintings before something more sinister occurs. A delightful read with wonderful chemistry and interaction between the characters, I also liked the friendship that Grace and Frederick have with Jack, as well as seeing their relationship grow stronger. It was also fun seeing Jack team up with a spunky counterpart of his own, in this fast paced mystery.
A highly enjoyable read with wonderful characters, strong faith and growth, with a positive view of marriage, as well as plenty of adventure! A terrific addition to the series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Fredrick and Grace are such a fun newlywed couple. She loosens him up and he keeps her grounded. As they finally reach their honeymoon destination in Italy, another mystery crops up and it was so entertaining to watch it all unfold in an adventurous historical mystery.
I felt like I was in the middle of a live-action murder mystery game, you know–the ones where each person gets a character to act out and as the game progresses, clues appear and everyone tries to solve it. There were a plethora of characters and they all seemed to be playing a part as the mystery surrounding this art collection was being solved.
There were so many twists and turns and turns and twists and just when I thought I had it, another twisty turn popped up.
I love characters I can get behind. I love the humor, friendships and relationships. And I love the writing style of this beloved Pepper Basham series.
Content: mild moments of peril; mild romance
*I received a complimentary reading copy and borrowed the audio through an app. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
This mystery read offers a fun romp in a former time as we follow newlyweds Lord and Lady Astley (a Brit and an American) through their sleuthing adventures as they attempt to help solve art thefts in Europe while on their lengthy honeymoon. I enjoyed their banter and their endearing relationship and all the twists that make it hard to figure out who is behind it all. The author captures the feel of the time and the style of this genre quite well. The characters come across as real and alive and are fun to watch. The suspense adds to the drama along with the danger that lurks around them. You don’t have to have read the other books in this Freddie and Grace Mysteries series before getting absorbed in this intriguing tale. If you like old-fashioned mysteries, grab this series and get ready for a wild ride. I don’t think you will be disappointed. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
I found myself captivated and entranced by this story from page one. It’s so exciting to see the main characters from the previous books caught up in another mystery. This story brought out such a fun personality in Fredrick and endeared him to me even more. I found my heart racing often as this is an action-packed story that kept me white-knuckling the book until the very end. I loved that the mystery took place in Venice, it made the art work with all its secret codes so real. You will be whisked off to the art museums and among the world of art only to end up in an Italian Villa with secret rooms and danger. Pepper Basham is an author you won't forget, she weaves a powerful tale that keeps you hanging on to every word. I don't want to miss a single book! Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
If you love mysteries, this is certainly a well written fun one with lots of twists and turns to figure out. Freddie and Grace are nothing if not fun, clever, affectionate and curious. I have loved them ever since The Mistletoe Countess, which is one of my favorite books ever. But the one thing I have decided since I've finished the last two books in this series is that I am not a person who likes mysteries. I really am not anxious to figure it all out. They are just not my thing I guess you would say. But if it's yours, this is your series then. Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read this book. The opinions are entirely my own.
I finished this book yesterday afternoon making it my final book of 2023!!🥳 First review of 2024🤷🏼♀️😂 Here we go!
Initially I was really enjoying this book and went through the first like 80% going to give it four stars. I really liked Grace and Frederick; they make me smile 😊 They crack me up with her being so bent on being a sleuth and him being skeptical and just wanting to have a normal life😂 He’s not going to have that being married to her🤣
I was enjoying the mystery; I was pretty confused the entire time as to who the culprit was. Until the end when it just went downhill for me in this department.
There is one point where something not huge happens but I won’t say what because I do not want to spoil anything, So I’m gonna try to be super vague. But anyway it looks like it might be this person who the culprit or at least part of the heist situation but then it’s proven that they’re not. Which I was like okaaaayyyy….it would have been super interesting if they were but whatever. There’s later a different agenda for that character and then being a villain would have ruined that so🤷🏼♀️🙄
Then it’s revealed who the actual villains are and I just had to shut the book and roll my eyes so hard because I was so annoyed. And that might seem dramatic, but if you’ve read the book, then you might understand. But I can’t say anything more for spoilers. But one of the villains, really kind of the first one to be revealed, really cheapened the story for me because of how cliche it is. It was completely unnecessary; there were so many different ways this story could have gone and been really interesting. But it just felt like the easy way out was taken. But that’s just my opinion🤷🏼♀️
If she writes more books in this series, I will definitely not hesitate to read them because I love Grace and Frederick! This one just did not end in a satisfying way for me🤷🏼♀️
I adored this historical mystery! I have really enjoyed this series and hope more books will follow Frederick and Grace as they work to solve mysteries and grow in their love for each other and in their trust in God.
I felt that the amazing chemistry that was showcased between the newlyweds in book one was back in this novel. It was there in book two also, but maybe a bit more subdued. I really enjoyed the connection and conversations that Frederick and Grace had together in The Juliet Code, which highlighted their love for each other as well as solidifying their connection as a married couple.
The mystery was spot on in this story. Plenty of potential suspects, danger for both Lord and Lady Astley, but also for Detective Jack Miracle, as well. I liked getting a deeper look into his personality, heart, and back story.
I loved this novel from start to finish and it has made me want to go back and listen to The Mistletoe Countess again soon.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
I love Pepper Basham's style of writing--both humorous and witty--life always wrapped in God's grace and redemption. This series is so. much. fun! The mysteries are reminiscent of Grace's beloved mystery fiction and are actually delightful to try and solve along with Lord and Lady Astley. There are two things I don't love about this series. 1. The physical side of their relationship is more detailed than I would recommend to others. 2. Their mindset when it comes to their family. For example, "Was it possible to enjoy these adventures with her for as long as they could before their family began to grow?" While I know this quote was referring to Grace becoming pregnant, it still frustrated me because they already have two daughters! While I appreciate Pepper Basham's inclusion of their two daughters used to show Grace's large heart and love, they seem nothing more than an afterthought included in the series, and just causes Lord and Lady Astley to look naive and irresponsible when it comes to raising children and actually providing them with a stable home. How can they be the family the girls need when they are traipsing off in search of mysteries to solve?
Both, however, are personal preferences and will most likely not affect others' enjoyment of the book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This adventure with Frederick and Grace was just as delightful as the others. From the beginning, we get thrown into the hijinks of adventurous Grace and her more cautious husband. I love these two characters so much, and between their banter, the romantic moments that made me swoon, and the action, I was engrossed in the novel until its ending.
I especially liked the addition of Jack and the scenes from his POV, as well as the hint for a future romance for him.
Honestly, I could gush about this novel for a long time. This whole series, really. It’s definitely worth the read, especially if you’re a fan of historical romance sprinkled with a bit of suspense. If you haven’t read The Mistetoe Countess or The Cairo Curse, you’ll still enjoy The Juliet Code, but I recommend reading the series in order.
Overall, The Juliet Code is a sweet historical story perfect for romance readers who crave adventure.
