Getting old is not for sissies. But as Brian Crane’s crotchety but endearing seniors Earl and Opal Pickles do it, it can be humorous and often touching. For over twenty years, Crane’s comic strip, Pickles, has been delighting readers around the world. This sixth collection continues the adventures of grandparents Earl and Opal; their precocious grandson, Nelson; quirky family members and friends; and the family’s dog and cat, who offer their own distinctive views of the goings-on. Crane’s view of the foibles of a long-married, often cantankerous couple and their extended family and friends is wry, honest, and always warmhearted.
I have been reading this comic strip on a daily basis for about 15 years and this is my first collection of those strips. I love this book and love Pickles. It is a combination of subtle humor, some outright laugh out loud strips, philosophy and some great characters from the main characters of Earl and Opal Pickles, to their grandson Nelson, as well as their pet cat Muffin and Roscoe their dog. To help you appreciate these strips, pay attention to Roscoe whom the cartoonist has given amazing life and watch his eyes since even he is shocked by some of the adventures of Earl and Opal. Great comic, please do not let it stop!!! Love reading this each and every day!!!!
2022 bk 149. I love Pickles and the characters developed by Brian Crane. When life hands me little upsets I pull out my collection and read this cartoon series. I was delighted when I realized I had missed one in all of my purchases and even more delighted when it arrived on my porch. The interactions between grandfather and grandson are priceless - and the lesson on couch surfing instead of ocean surfing netted $3.25 in coins in my own sofa. I'll have to follow this guide book more closely!
When we stopped taking the daily newspaper, the comics were one thing I missed the most. And I especially missed "Pickles". For my Library's Book Nerd challenge this year, one of the books was to be picked from the non-fiction 700's. There I found "Pickles"! A whole book of comic strips and lots of other "Pickles" books! Opal and Earl Pickles are an older couple who spend a lot of time with their grandson, Nelson and the dog and cat. The strip is so funny because it reflects life so well. I used to compare the things said in the strip to my mom and dad. Now my husband and I are living it.
Opal and Earl are sitting on the couch and Earl is clicking the remote. Earl: This stupid remote doesn't work!" Opal: "It's a poor workman who blame his tools." Opal: "Besides, you're trying to change the channel with my cell phone."
I love my library's Book Nerd Challenge because I find so many good, wonderful, fantastic, amazing, interesting, entertaining books!
Life is too short to spend it trying to find matching socks! - Earl
Crane delivers this and countless other gems though the great cartoon performances of Earl and Opal, grandparents to youngster Nelson. Totally relatable and often lol funny daily newspaper strip, with a generous batch compiled into this awesome paperback that was published 11 years ago that I found in a local little free library…both items being never ending sources of treasures!
It looks like Crane is still working, so the adventures of Earl & Opal live on. If you don’t still get a daily paper (and who does these days!) Pickles is available on Gocomics.com.
I collect cartoons and comic strip compilations, and this is one of the authors/illustrators that I buy more than the first book of. The art work is good, but the real strong point of the strip is that it pokes fun at things without being mean-spirited. You can see yourself in at least one of the characters in the strip and the situations are rife with personal recognition. I enjoy it.
