"Talk about hell on earth..." Sekhmet's life was pretty good; you know for a goddess. Her job was simple - kill those that sought to go against the creator. It was a job she was good at but unfortunately got a little too carried away with when she almost single handedly wiped out mankind. For her penance she has spent the last thousand years serving as one of the Guardians; a group of immortals that protect mankind and led by the Goddess Isis - who kind of had her own anger issues. The Azura, a league of immortal bad asses, are literally trying to bring hell on earth and with it, Set - the banished God and ruler of the Makhaut. For the first time in history and with the help of the Makhaut, they may actually pull it off. Even the Guardians are at a loss. In the Hail Mary of all attempts to save the world Isis, now going by Isira, sends Sekhmet to New Orleans, to find and protect the "Key" but when it is determined that a traitor lies among the Guardians, Sekhmet, now going by the name of Syn, is forced to seek help in the most unlikely of places...her least favorite person and fellow Guardian...Malachi. What's a former Goddess to do? Oh yeah, kick butt and take names.

S.K. Whiteside is a reader, writer, and lover of all things dark and mysterious. She is a Mythic Fiction writer of Contemporary Urban & Historical Fantasy and most of her stories have a background in Egyptian Mythology with a modern day adaptation and unique twist. As an author her art of "teasing" is precise and her character interaction draws you in and makes the story play out like a movie in your mind. This is a talent that now all authors have, nor will they ever have.

Her debut story, "Fallen", was released in part March 2012 as a teaser to "Morbid Seraphic" her annual anthology with Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing. Even though it was only part of the story "Fallen" reached Top Ten status on Amazon sparking interest in Morbid Seraphic which later reached #1 in Amazon for Anthologies. Her follow up short story release "VEXED" was released November 2012. "VEXED" has and continues to be an Amazon Top 100 best selling paid Kindle release in three different countries. It served as the prequel to her debut full novel release "Inheritance". "Inheritance" was released June 1, 2013 and within the first week became an Amazon Top 100 best selling Kindle release in three countries simultaneously and going as high as #2 in Canada for two weeks straight. To date (June 25, 2013) Inheritance (as well as Vexed) maintains Top 100 status in at least two countries each between Canada, Spain, The United Kingdom, and the US interchangeably. While her eBooks are presently only available in Kindle her paperbacks are available worldwide.

When she is not writing S.K. Whiteside is a full time Mental Health Therapist. She began writing in Academia but decided that writing about things on the "other side of the veil" was a lot more interesting. Living in the paranormal capital of the world makes it fairly easy for her to come up with characters, many of which are based on of real personas in her life that can't help but carry over into her writing.

Upcoming Releases: "Thicker Than Water" (A Psychological Thriller), and Blood Born, the growing anticipated follow up to Inheritance.

Inheritance is like a hidden gem for me. Im a sucker for mythology and a great story. And what a coincidence this story has both! Sit back and lets talk, yes?

Inheritance mixes Egyptian mythology with present day New Orleans because you know they go together naturally right. Okay so they dont but for this they really do. Syn is a warrior one who is being punished. She has been stripped of all feelings so that she can do the job that is demanded of her. Previously she kinda went on a rampage and killed a lot of humans.

Thousands of years old she relys on only herself these days. Which is fine she is totally badass. Shes a wonderful example of how heroines should be written. Not these whiney little girls. She did have partners in the past and well for one reason or another they didnt work out. She believed she cared for her last partner which is odd because again she had been stripped of her feelings.

Her last partner imprinted with “the key” im really not going to go into explaining that part and youll have to forgive me because the way it is written is so damn perfect. Seriously its captivating! As a result of the imprint William and Katie are sent off to an undisclosed location where they are to live in secret.

Syn is called by Iris to protect a guy in New Orleans and that how we get there. Its theorized someone within the guardians is a traitor. Shes not completely alone she has a partner in Echo. Echo is awesome and I loved him. He is essentially a shapeshifter. I mean come on thats awesome, Echo does have a tell his eyes cannot change. Also he doesnt speak, hes deaf. How Syn didnt figure this out I have no idea. Shes also got Malachi someone who she doesnt exactly trust. But he proves to be a worthy alley.

Remy grew up believing his parents were truly in fact his parents. Sadly after they both die he finds out he was adopted and that his true parents set up a trust fund for him. Oh by the way this is the guy Syn is sent to protect.

This novel is captivating from start to finish. There was always something going on. Thrilling and humorous! Whiteside knows how to tell a story! I cannot wait to read the next story in this series especially after that curveball at the end of this one! It wasnt exactly a cliffhanger but youll definitely be asking for more as soon as you finish!

I received an ARC copy to give an honest review.

I was amazed with this book, because it is so hard to write ancient information and the now information into a story and have it work out. I love everything to do with ancient Egypt. And with Inheritance you get a taste of Egypt along with the now part of things. You read about immortals and you get a bit of information on how the whole vampires and werewolves got their name.

I do have to say I found the few twilight comments pretty funny.

You have this badass chick name Syn and she is immortal not only that she is a guardian and she is to protect mankind. And it pretty much seems like an easy job for Syn as she can not die really. She can get wounded but she does heal up. I liked the way her outfits were described in the story, it seemed like she was a chick you do not want to mess with.
I do have to say I figured how who the key was related to after a few mentions of the characters William and Kate. Now the ending really has me intrigued as to what is going to happen next.

Another character I liked was Echo and what he could do. I honestly do not think I have read a story with someone who has a power like his and I found that to be pretty cool.

There are a few fighting scenes which I would have enjoyed more of, but with the fighting scenes that were there it balanced out the book perfectly.

I honestly do not even want to go into details or say too much as I do not want to give anything away. It was so hard to put this book down to do anything because I kept wanting to read about what was going to happen next. So when will book two be out?

If you are looking to read a book that has some action, a bit of Egyptian written into the story, love lost, love gained and a love that may or may not have been there, paranormal, along with a Guardian who kicks ass and takes no names! Then this is the book for you.

Here's a book that challenged me. It's based on Egyptian mythology and yet chock full of paranormal ideas as well . Werewolves, vampires, angels, demons and even voodoo priestesses populate this imaginative tale. It's the story of Syn a former Egyptian goddess who previously unleashed her badass self on the world and now seeks redemption by acting as a guardian . She's a complicated woman lacking in emotions and yet struggling to survive in a modern world. Sent to protect the' Key' , which essentially is probably the end of humanity she travels to New Orleans and there meets Remy who is much more than he seems. Beseiged on all sides by forces of evil and realising that a traitor lurks close by Syn and Remy begin a journey together that is fraught with danger and could result in hell on earth!
I was really intrigued by this book but found it a little hard to identify with the heroine initially. There is a lot of information and numerous factions fighting within this story. As I am fairly new to Egyptian mythology I found myself taking it slowly but quickly caught on.i adore the popular culture references made by the author as it brings a delightful touch of humour to the tale and made Syn much more human. Ms. Whiteside introduces a character that's a mimic and that's not something this reader has encountered in books before and I really look forward to seeing just where the author will take this.
To quote the author when I read this it 'became a journey of so much more' and I ended up loving these characters and will be reading the next book in this series 'Blood Born' when it comes out.
It's a little shorter than I would like so I award this 4 and a half

Vampire books, even good ones, tend to leave readers at a loss as to where these crazy creatures really came from in the first place. S.K. Whiteside's "Inheritance" sheds light on the mystery, and works it into the fabric of the story. I loved the characters and how human the author made nonhuman beings. The book was fun, enticing, and leaves the reader thirsty for the next in the series.
