Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann), was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's famous opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffman appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which the famous ballet The Nutcracker is based. The ballet Coppélia is based on two other stories that Hoffmann wrote, while Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler.
Hoffmann's stories were very influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement.

Kurz zum Inhalt: Ganz im Sinne der Schwarzen Romantik gibt es ein Schloss in einer seltsam-düsteren Gegend, die von der restlichen Umgebung stark abweicht. 🖤🖤🖤 Es gibt einen düster gestimmten Majoratsherren und seine Frau. Es gibt sehr viel rätselhaftes, was die Besitzer des Majorats angeht und der gespenstische Gruselfaktor kommt auch nicht zu kurz. 👻👣 Das ganze wird zum Großteil aus der Perspektive von einem jungen Mann, dem Vetter des Justitiars, erzählt und über Gespräche zwischen den beiden. Die eingebettete Erzählung über die Vergangenheit des Majorats wird vom älteren Justitiar selbst erzählt.
Mit etwas über 100 Seiten ist 'Das Majorat' ein relativ langes Nachtstück E. T. A. Hoffmanns. Die Geschichte wird dementsprechend sehr ausführlich geschildert und für Hoffmann typisch mit einer Erzählung (über die Vergangenheit, die aber dann bis ins Jetzt der Rahmenhandlung reicht) in der Erzählung gerahmt. Inhaltlich ist es wirklich spannend und düster und man kann in groben Zügen gewisse Elemente aus Poes 'The Fall of the House Usher' erkennen (die anfängliche Beschreibung der Gegend, die geschwisterlichen Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen, der Name des Majoratsherrn, die Musik, der Mond, das Unwetter, das große Geheimnis und das Ende des Stammbaums). 🖤 Man findet auch einige intertextuelle Anspielungen auf 'Der Sandmann' von E. T. A. Hoffmann selbst (z.B. zum Feuerkreis-Tanz etc.) und der Text ist auch fast so gut wie 'Der Sandmann'.☺️ Zudem wird auch auf Schillers 'Der Geisterseher' direkt Bezug genommen. Ich mag v.a. die spannende, geheimnisvolle Erzählweise und die Rahmung mit der Vorgeschichte.🖤

Esta breve historia, escrita en 1817 por Hoffman, tiene muchos elementos típicos de la literatura romántica - el castillo en las tierras baldías, la atmósfera ominosa, la presencia de lo sobrenatural, los amores imposibles - que hacen que pensemos que será una lectura previsible que siga los cánones del gótico. Y así parece, cuando el joven secretario se enamora de la baronesa y la distrae con su música mientras rondan los fantasmas en los corredores nocturnos y la tragedia parece aproximarse de la mano de un marido celoso.
Pero a mitad de la narración, Hoffman da un giro espectacular, y a partir de un registro mucho más realista, nos va contando toda la historia de esa familia y cómo la institución del mayorazgo - el heredero único - envenena las relaciones entre los familiares durante generaciones, dando lugar a la desgracia y la tragedia que flotan en las habitaciones de la lóbrega mansión.
En resumen, una historia muy original en su género, muy atmosférica y detallada. La última parte resulta un poco confusa si no se lee con atención, ya que la historia de la familia es algo complicada y hay muchos nombres parecidos.

In den Interpretationen wird vorrangig auf die Zeitbezüge der Erzählung hingewiesen (gesellschaftlicher Wandel, Französische Revolution), aber wenn man die Geschichte liest oder sie sich eben vorlesen lässt (Laufzeit 3 1/2 Stunden), drängt sich vor allem erst einmal die Feststellung auf, dass ETA Hoffmann ein ganz fantastischer Erzähler ist. Vordergründig ist DAS MAJORAT ein Prachtstück deutscher Schauer=Romantik, und als solches kann man es genießen, auch wenn man die historische Entwicklung Deutschlands, vor der sich die Handlung abspielt, weitestgehend ignoriert.
Mich hat vor allem die gewiefte erzählerische Ironie beeindruckt, mit der Hoffmann im ersten und längeren Teil der Erzählung die Liebes=Narretei des Ich-Erzählers präsentiert: ein Tanz auf dem Liebesvulkan, der nur im Absturz zur ein oder anderen Seite enden kann. Und obwohl dem Erzähler das klar sein muss, er von seinem Großonkel unmissverständlich darauf hingewiesen wird, ist es sein jugendliches Feuer, dass sich über die Vernunft hinwegsetzt und ihn in absurde Situationen bringt.
Hans Paetsch hat die Erzählung großartig eingelesen, es ist ein Genuss, ihm zuzuhören (herrlich der leicht ostpreußische Zungenschlag, dem er den Bediensteten des Barons verleiht; da der nur eine Nebenrolle spielt, nutzt sich die Wirkung auch nicht ab). Fast bezweifle ich, dass ich beim Selbstlesen so viel Spaß gehabt hätte.
Dafür muss man beim Audio-Book natürlich auf Illustrationen verzichten, wie zum Beispiel der von Julius Zimpel:

The Entailment also translated as Primogeniture is a flawed work by ETA Hoffman one of the greatest if not the greatest writer of fantastic literature of all times.
The story begins with the account of a young man who visits a baron living on a sinister, ghost-ridden property on the Baltic Sea. ETA Hoffman describes the eerie setting in a way that reminds one of Karen Blixen the great twentieth century writer of Gothic Tales set on the Baltic see.
Despite the warnings of his uncle, the young man begins a flirtation with the Baroness that the reader senses will have the most dire consequences.
Unfortunately, Hoffman drops the threads half way through. Ultimately, the romance of the protagonist will have no impact whatsoever on the sinister drama that will enfold. The family has been doomed by an act of entailment created a century prior to the moment when the narrative begins. The superb story of the young man and the baroness is pushed off-stage to make way for a contorted and tedious tale of family jealousies.
The Entailment then is a very badly structured work from a writer who typically laid out his narratives with discipline and efficiency.
Nonetheless the atmosphere in the opening half is superb. Read it and enjoy it for what it is worth. Then pass on to the next story in the collection of Hoffman Tales that you are working your way through.

Un relato que es una historia de fantasmas, de iniciación, de romance y maldición. Actually read this while listening to a reading by the late German actor Hans Paetsch, as I find reading along helps me concentrate. This is a most interesting narrative with two narrators, the primary first person narrator a young man, whose uncle is a solicitor. The first part of the story is told through the young man, with whom the uncle share a rather strange visit to a castle on the Baltic Sea coast. Later some time after the events, the uncle decides to tell his nephew the backstory to what they had witnessed, as well as an epilogue. The ghost story aspect is more a mcguffin than the centerpiece of the story, but it works well. The conventional interpretation is to see it as a commentary on the decline of nobility and the less fragile and more flexible nature of the bourgeoisie. That is certainly there, but that strikes me as an unlikely motivation for Hoffmann at a time when, despite the French Revolution, nobility remained dominant political players throughout. Better to take it as the narrator leaves us at the end, that the long dead Baron Rödiger's decision to adopt primogeniture that caused the problem. Worth noting here that primogeniture would have been associated with England at the time, whereas title and property were usually shared on the continent, and the shift, which seems to reflect the fact that the family's land is dwindling and so reserving it for only one person arguably makes sense. Regardless, it is an engaging story told in an interesting manner.

El fantástico es el fantasma. La originalidad de este fantástico es que encierra una culpa de generaciones. El tono del cuento es confuso, quizás porque la codificación génerica de la literatura de terror actual sea posterior a Hoffmann (hay un fantasma despachado, hay amor fugaz, hay relato, etc.). No deja de ser gracioso el momento en que Teodoro, asustado por una presencia, despavorido le pregunta a su tío por lo que sucede en esa casa y este le contesta:
<< —¡Has hecho bien en despertarme, tocayo! ¡Ay! estaba metido en un sueño
horrible y todo por culpa de esta habitación y de la sala de al lado que han hecho que
recordara el pasado y los extraños sucesos que acontecieron aquí. ¡Pero venga,
durmamos ahora como Dios manda!
Diciendo esto se tapó con la manta y pareció volver a dormirse. >>
Y ya está.
La brusquedad del relato incomoda un poco.
Hay personajes avaros hasta la caricatura. La segunda parte, con un sesgo muy fáctico, es seca y trae estos personajes sosos; la narración en ella es más bien cronología.

Wenn man die philosophischen Hintergründe zu dem Werk lesen will, dann kann man das im kurzen Wikipedia-Artikel ganz gut machen.
Ich habe es ja eher als Kriminalroman über einen Mord aus Neidgelüsten heraus gelesen, ein wenig auch als eine Schauergeschichte über mondsüchtige Traumwandler und tatsächliche Poltergeister. Die Schilderung des Schlosses vor dem Einschlafen zu lesen kann schon auch zu Alpträumen führen.
Ach ja, eine zarte Frau, die schwärmerisch geliebt wird, selbst schwärmerisch ist und dann auch jung verstirbt kommt auch vor, ebenso ein geheim gehaltener Sohn, der dann als der große Erbe auftritt (was ihm auch kein Glück bringt).
Für eine unterhaltsame Zwischendurchlektüre alleweil geeignet.

Il maggiorasco è un diritto risalente al medioevo, un istituto di origine spagnola diffusosi in Italia nel XVI secolo e abolito nel 1866 ed era, nell'antico sistema, il diritto del primogenito di ereditare tutto il patrimonio familiare, escudendo tutti gli altri dall'eredità. Su questa base prende il via questo racconto, che ho scaricato grazie all'iniziativa Solidarietà digitale. Il racconto, che è un misto di storia d'amore e magia nera, non mi ha però convinto del tutto. La trama è sciapa, senza nessun mordente né suspence. La prima parte è pure interessante, ma il cambio di narrazione a metà racconto, dove il protagonista racconta la storia della sua famiglia, risulta essere dispersivo e anche un po' noioso.

Мистического Гофмана в «Майорате» нет, теперь Эрнст предлагает открыть секрет одного дворянского рода, вместе с читателем постаравшись разгадать тайну разрушенного замка. Поныне оттуда, где он располагался, раздаются стонущие и царапающие звуки. Неужели привидения поселились в развалинах? Стоит полагать, что именно так. Чего только не услышишь на берегу, особенно находясь в таком уникальном месте, как Курише-Нерунг, узкой полосе суши между заливом и морем. Эрнст Гофман разобрал близкое его пониманию, дополнив историю семейными дрязгами вокруг наследственного владения родовыми землями.

Wie schon berichtet bessere ich für meine Prüfungen ein wenig meine Kenntnis von E. T. A. Hoffmanns Geschichten auf – es gibt Schlimmeres, zumal, wenn sie einem der Märchenonkel der Nation vorliest! Falls beim Namen Hans Paetsch nichts klingelt: Erzählerstimme von Hui Buh, Die Hexe Schrumpeldei, Tom Sawyer und Huckleberry Finn und und und (ich zitiere auch gerne einen alten Ärzte-Song: "Sie ahnten ja nicht, was ihnen bevorstand"). Wunderbar knarzig und gemütlich.
Keine Gruselgeschichte
Der Aufhänger der Geschichte, das Majorat, wirkte auf mich etwas seltsam. Nicht gerade ein typisch literarisches Thema.
Die Erzählung kritisiert vor allem die rechtliche Form des Majorats, da sie Zwist und Hass unter Geschwistern sät. Ein ganz praktischer Schreibgrund also. Der Erzählton ist keinesfalls der einer Gruselgeschichte, auch wenn Das Majorat gerne als solche verkauft wird. Obwohl einiges Schaurige erzählt wird, liegt der Fokus eher auf der Studie der Charaktere, vor allem ihrer dunklen Seite.
So ist der junge Theodor ein wahrer romantischer Geist, der sich von dem spukigen Schloss (gepaart mit der Lektüre des Geistersehers, eine immer wiederkehrende Referenz) ganz in seinen Bann ziehen lässt. Noch viel stärker Seraphine, die Baronin. Die Kunstbegeisterten der Erzählung sind gleichzeitig die für Übernatürliches Empfänglichen.
V. dagegen liebt es, den Jüngeren wie den Rest der Welt zu verspotten und hält nicht viel von Übernatürlichem. Er bewahrt stets einen kühlen Kopf und ist rational organisiert, aber sympathisch.
Hoffmann'scher Humor
Hätte ich das selbst lesen müssen, wäre ich sicher eher gelangweilt gewesen, obwohl E.T.A. seine Geschichte immer mit einer guten Prise Humor würzt. Ein paar Mal musste ich laut lachen.
Aber was die Erzählung hörenswert macht, ist vor allem der unübertroffene Hans Paetsch. Viermal habe ich das Hörbuch durchgehört, und nicht nur wegen der verschlungenen Familiengeschichte im zweiten Teil. Der Mann konnte einfach lesen, dass es eine wahre Freude ist!
Aber neben Humor und Erzähler gibt es auch kleinere Sympathieverstärker. Zum Beispiel die Landschaften und Umgebungen, die gut in die Schwarze Romantik passen. Oder der unterschwellige Zwist des Baronenpaars, da sie gerne am Piano musiziert, er das aber für ein vollkommen ungeeignetes Instrument für eine Jagdgesellschaft hält. Der Hausdiener, der nichts einfach erklären kann, sondern immer um zehn Ecken erzählt, was echt komisch ist. Das Erwachsenwerden des Erzählers.

Andererseits konnte ich wie schon angedeutet der Erbfolge im zweiten Teil nicht gleich folgen, weil manche Erben auch den Namen eines Vorfahren übernehmen, da kam ich dann etwas durcheinander. In Buchform wäre das nicht passiert. Und so topaktuell finde ich das Thema auch nicht... Obwohl die Rechtsform des Majorats wohl noch möglich ist, um sein Erbe zu regeln.

La prima parte è molto accattivante, la storia è narrata in uno splendido stile che fa ben intendere una atmosfera gotico-romantica, nel bel castello del barone.
Bella la parte della caccia al lupo e il rapporto tra Teodoro, che narra in prima persona, e il suo mentore nonché prozio, che è anche protagonista di una specie di esorcismo contro un fantasma che incute paura e orrore allo scoccare della mezzanotte.
Poi però dopo una settantina di pagine, la storia si sposta, e, nonostante sia ambientata ancora nel maggiorasco, non si capisce dove voglia andare a parare e non si comprende questo cambiamento di scena, che necessitava invece di essere approfondita e conclusa, così come il rapporto tra Teodoro e la splendida baronessa.
