My 7 year old son read this aloud to me. He was laughing and though he screamed "disgusting" when the dog peed, he had the biggest grin on his face which told me the "disgusting" remark was for my benefit. He finished reading it and then proceeded to run off to read it to his dad and 4 sisters. I think it's pretty safe to say that he LOVED this book and that this is a good read for a child in his age group.
Great story about teamwork and love for the family pet.
This is a great children's book with fun illustrations! My 2 year old really liked the story about soccer and the dog's "trouble-making" on the field. It is a great story to teach the value of teamwork, getting along, and unconditional love for the family dog. Definitely recommend this book for children! Kids who love soccer and/or have a family dog will love this book. Parents are able to use it as a teaching tool too!
"Bash and Lucy Fetch Confidence" drives home a valuable lesson -- kids will have the best opportunity to thrive in sports and life if their adult role models provide a comfortable environment that engenders confidence. I highly recommend including this book in your family's bedtime collection.

The author asked me to review this book for her. I have read it through a few times now and let it percolate a bit. I liked the story okay. Although I could not fathom why the coach had such a hard time understanding Sebastian. Even though he used "dog" words, his meaning seemed to be perfectly clear to me. Eventually, Sebastian is going to have to learn confidence when Lucy is not around. As a children's librarian who has read and looked at thousands of picture books since the 1970s, I was underwhelmed by the illustrations. When compared with illustrations by artists like Eric Carle, Trina Schart Hyman, David Wiesner, Tomie DePaola, and other luminaries in the children's illustrating world, Nichols' illlustrations fall short and seem amateurish to me. In her favor, however, she did depict multi-racial characters. I realize that children are much less critical than adults with more experience with picture books, and I don't doubt that children, especially soccer loving and dog loving children will like or love this book, especially when Lucy keeps destroying soccer balls. While this is a likable story, it is not quite of the caliber of picture books published by the major publishers.
Love this book. It is a cute book about a boy's close connection to his dog and the benefits - even in sports - of being bonded with a dog. I also like Michael's Dog Blog, which is full of fun dog facts for kids and funny videos from young Michael, the book's co-author.
What a great book! I loved the story and the illustrations. I enjoyed both reading and listening to the audio cd. Cute little story that I shared with the kids of co-workers, it got A+'s all around. Thank you so much for the chance to read and share this book.
