Good supplement reading for a beginner.

I am new to photography, I am interested in landscapes, birds, and astrophotography. I have been watching content on The Great Courses about photography, which has helped tremendously. The lectures suggested immersing myself in as many ways as possible of the basics. This book didn't teach me anything I didn't already learn, but it did help it stick in the memory a bit more. It is a quick read and a good way to go over the basics. I would not recommend this as a first or only source of learning the basics of photography, but if you have time, it is worth it to supplement.

Back to the basics

Just getting started with digital photography? This book should be required reading. The author presents good examples to illustrate what may be totally foreign concepts. This book will help establish your basic knowledge so that when you start shooting in the field, you’ll know what to look for. Be aware that the author doesn’t address more advanced cameras like mirrorless or micro four thirds, but the basic concepts discussed are the same across all digital platforms.

Excellent tutorial!

The autor is clear and patient in his discussion of the four aspects of photography. I dropped one star because his examples focus on outdoor photography. I am struggling to properly photography interior rooms and would have appreciated more discussion on the challenges of lighting. Otherwise I learned a lot and will experiment with his lessons. But I will also look for a book about interior photography.

I traded my 35mm for a DSLR about 10 years ago and decided I needed a refresher on the basics. My next step is to learn my newest DSLR (manual mode) to get the shots I used to do with the 35mm. While I borrowed this book from the Kindle Unlimited library, I will likely purchase it.
Thanks, Al :)

Great Intro to Photography

This book may not be titled correctly. It is a book that gives a great introduction to photography and was very helpful for me in learning how to use my DSLR camera. However, I don't feel like the information presented has made me a master photographer.

Good but not for the very beginner.

I am very new to photography so this book helped me a little, but not what I was expecting. I will re-read it again once I get a better understanding of the ISO. I understand shutter speed and aperture but how and when to adjust the ISO and what number to use.? Overall really good.

Simple, clear, effective

There’s so many courses, articles, and philosophies on photography. Al breaks down all the magic into 70 pages of clear definitions, principles, and examples in a way that makes you feel empowered to go out and start taking your photos! As with anything, the next step is on you - repeatedly applying what you’ve been taught. Highly recommend!

Excellent book, but a bit short

A lot of valuable info in here for a newbie like me, but not enough examples. The shortness of the book makes me feel as though it is a collection of magazine articles, rather than a complete book. I would love to see more and will probably follow the author for that purpose. Easy to read, well written.

Excellent intro to basics of digital photography. Short and easy to understand, and left me with a basic understanding (after re-reading a few times). My re-reads were no fault of writer, it was the abstract facts of digital photography that took a bit to absorb. This book really helped me get started.

In depth and easy to follow

Not all how too books are laid out in a manner that is easy to follow and understand. Judge gave great explanations with outstanding visuals. That said, the best part of the book is that, Judge kept the explanations concise and did not drown us with ten thousand words, when 500 would suffice.
Two thumbs up......

Good information, would like more depth to it.

I wish there would have been deeper explanation on the subjects covered. Good starting point for beginners, for me, a more moderate used i would have loved more depth.

Mr. Judge’s books are concise and well structured. I attempted other photography books, but, for now, I will be reading his books exclusively as I attempt to comprehend and master photography.

Good but writes over my head

I was not really displeased but the author occasionally lost me in discussing the finer points of a particular subject. For example, in the area of histograms.
