Solid Advice for Writers - Beginners or Intermediate

A quick read for any writer needing an overview of the process and craft of a writing life.

Each chapter reads as a standalone and offers ideas, suggestions, and encouragement on improving ones skills. The chapter on receiving and giving critiques is excellent, especially for those unfamiliar with the methods of good critiquing.

The same applies to the chapter on the writing process. One size does not fit all and every has their own. But knowing one's process, and working to improve it makes for more productive writing in a shorter amount of time.

Loaded with tips and techniques, this book is a great reference when faced with a blank page, or stuck in the middle of the work bin progress and needs a bit of inspiration.

Strongly recommend for writers at all levels of experience!

I love the way Melissa Donovan identifies and expounds on 10 fundamental habits that will benefit every writer who wants to improve their craft in just eight chapters. What I particularly enjoyed is the way Ms. Donovan incorporates inspirational quotes to help the reader contemplate and strengthen their thinking. I think this book lends itself to independent study type work or for small group work. Either way, writers who read with intent and answer some of the questions or explore some of the habits will benefit. For example, the habit of journaling can be useful especially in flushing out character development or even the flow of plot lines. Journaling, in my opinion, should be interactive with the writer.
