“What’s that smell in the Dell? It comes from a cheese, a great big cheese, a smelly, scrumptious cheese, if you please, made from the milk of a cantankerous cow—oh, wow! The one-horned, two-eared, three-legged Cowabunga!”
But the Cowabunga cheese has gone missing, and Sherlock Bones is on the case! That brainy bloodhound must use all five of his senses to track down the thief.
Children will have fun following the clues in this roll-off-your-tongue read-aloud inspired by the popular children’s song “The Farmer in the Dell” and illustrated with Dorothy Donohue’s lively signature cut-paper artwork.
these illustrations almost have layers ... very cool. i wish the page with the song was bigger to be able to see it in the kindle version ... so tiny. what a great read otherwise!!
really textured images- could use this book to reinforce many topics or transition : full moon calendar days (beginning and end of book), blood hounds / scent dogs, a book to reinforce the senses, rhyming book, kind of long for a storytime book but i really enjoyed it and will be using it for sure. also looks like my dog hippo so ofc i love.
This book was about a stolen mound of cheese that a hound dog named Sherlock Bones was tasked to find. This book was full of really cool textures and collages, and I loved how the letters of the words were sometimes big, different colors, stretched out, and followed Sherlock bones. It was also cute how the sentences rhymed. Overall super adorable and funny.
Inspired by the song "The Farmer in the Dell."a mystery involving missing cheese that only Sherlock Bones can solve using the clues he gathered using his five senses - See, Smell, Taste, Feel, and Hear.
Rhyming words but not a rhyming tempo which I found obnoxious, but I'm sure someone will find fun. The town's giant cheese goes missing. Sherlock Bones puts together clues, such as they are, and follows them to the culprit.
Loved this fun story based on The Farmer in the Dell. Lots of rhyming words, imagination, and cool illustrations, as well as a lesson on the five senses.
Oh, this book is adorable! The illustrations are fantastic and unique, and the style of writing is intriguing. The main theme here is solving a mystery and perseverance by the main character, "Sherlock Bones." The people of the village find out that their precious cheese is stolen in the night, and they send for Sherlock Bones to solve the mystery. He runs into some mishaps, but he perseveres until he finds the big, bad culprit and confronts him. This is a delightful read and has a lovely ending. What a great picture book about using your senses to investigate and a community bond.
Sherlock Bones and the Missing Cheese" is a cute, funny, and cleverly written tale inspired from the song, "Farmer in the Dell." The "five senses" are introduced in clues for finding the missing cheese. The illustrations created by Dorothy Donohue, are rendered in layered cut paper and shaded with colored pencils. I highly recommend this sweet tale for a read-aloud. Readers will enjoy looking at this book afterwards, reading, and retelling, the course of events.
Kind of a silly concept, but entertaining, especially for slightly older kids. Someone's stolen the town's giant, stinky cheese, and Sherlock Bones is on the case to find out who dunnit. I found the solution kind of amusing, and I liked the introduction of basic sleuthing techniques using the five senses...
I love the whole idea of this book, it has everything. Mystery, check. Rhymes, check. science lesson on the five senses, check. Deductive reasoning, check. The story is cute, the characters are humorous and the students will have a great time trying to predict what happened to the missing cheese.
One full moon, the cheese from the dell is missing. The farmer calls in Sherlock Bones who uses his senses to solve the crime. Students will enjoy finding the clues and trying to solve the mystery along with Sherlock.
Fun, not scary, teaches senses a but obviously but not in a boring way. It even a teaches something about forgiveness and repentance without even knowing it.
