Karen Pryor was an American author who specialized in behavioral psychology and marine mammal biology. She was the founder and proponent of clicker training. She was formerly a Marine Mammal Commissioner to the U.S. government.

There's nothing wrong with this book, it's just too simplistic and basic. If I was going to convince someone of the utility and value of clicker training versus more traditional alpha-dog methods, this would not be the book to win hearts and minds. Now that I have some experience with clicker training, it didn't offer anything beyond the very basics, which my pup has mastered, nor did it explain how to overcome common pitfalls. There are several positive training YouTube channels with more in-depth instruction and valuable commands.

Very clear, succinct overview of clicker training. We’ve been doing it a while, but I found this at a thrift store and figured it would be a good review and a good one to hand off to anyone needing an intro. A great starting point for newbies.

A very clear, succinct overview of clicker training. I have started doing it for my new 4-year old rescue dog at the suggestion of a trainer. If you've never clicker trained before, this book is an excellent place to start. The author explains the process simply and straightforwardly. If you have done clicker training previously, this book probably isn't for you; instead, look for something a little more advanced.

Kiedy do zamawianej przez internet paczki z zakupami przeznaczonymi dla Aviska, mojego kochanego amstaffa, dorzucałem książkę Karen Pryor, amerykańskiej pisarki specjalizującej się w psychologii behawioralnej i biologii ssaków morskich, Kliker – skuteczne szkolenie psa, miałem już jakie takie teoretyczne pojęcie o pozytywnym szkoleniu zwierząt, w szczególności zaś o metodzie klikerowej. Muszę przyznać więc, że równie jak na książce, zależało mi na płytce DVD z filmem The HOW of BOW WOW (wyprodukowanym przez Sherri Lippman i Virginię Broitman), która była dołączona do tego wydania. Widziałem już jego fragment w internecie i wydał mi się interesującym.

Po otrzymaniu przesyłki stwierdziłem, że chyba w tak małej objętości (cienka książeczka z dużą czcionką) nie znajdzie się wiele nowych rzeczy i potwierdziło się to w trakcie lektury. Wszystkie te informacje, które można wydobyć z Klikera Karen Pryor, można obecnie znaleźć w internecie; w końcu od pierwszego wydania książki w 2005 metoda klikerowa bardzo się upowszechniła i w sieci jest coraz więcej materiałów na ten temat. Z filmem było jeszcze gorzej.

Okazało się, że płytka DVD jest uszkodzona. Złożyłem reklamację, której nie uznano stwierdzając, iż multimedia na niej zawarte odtwarzają się prawidłowo i odesłano mi nośnik z powrotem. Jakież było moje zdziwienie, gdy zobaczyłem, że wbrew odpowiedzi, którą mi przekazano, odesłano mi... inną, dobrą płytę DVD. Jej zawartość okazała się tym, czego oczekiwałem – świetnym materiałem dla chcących poznać metodę.

Docieramy więc do zasadniczego pytania – czy warto poczynić wydatek, by posiadać w domu tę książkę i materiały na DVD w czasie, gdy sieć jest pełna informacji o metodzie klikerowej?

Tak! I absolutnie nie żałuję tej niewielkiej w sumie kwoty, jaką na ów zestaw poświęciłem. Dla początkujących jest to świetne wprowadzenie, a dla tych, którzy wiedzą już co nieco, gruntowne uporządkowanie rożnych strzępków wiedzy. Podstawową bowiem zaletą opracowania napisanego przez Karen Pryor jest wyłożenie w sposób usystematyzowany absolutnych podstaw, które w stosunku do wychowania wszystkich zwierząt są takie, jak w przypadku psów:

Zamiast powstrzymywać psa od robienia złych rzeczy można uczyć go robić rzeczy właściwe.

Moim zdaniem w wielkiej mierze jest to motto, które powinno również przyświecać wychowaniu szczególnego gatunku zwierząt, jakim jest homo sapiens.

Powyższe jest idealną konkretyzacją ogólniejszego przykazania:

Po pierwsze - nie karać.

Jedyną dozwoloną, ale za to absolutnie wystarczającą, „karą” jest brak nagrody.

W książce jest dużo odniesień do delfinów i innych zwierząt, przy wychowaniu których owe metody się narodziły. Niektórych to razi, gdyż są przeciwnikami zamykania żywych istot w oceanariach, ogrodach zoologicznych i innych podobnych instytucjach. Nie zważajcie na głosy takich nawiedzonych ekooszołomów, gdyż świadczą one albo o niewiedzy, albo o czymś znacznie gorszym. Odłów do ogrodów zoologicznych nigdy nie był zagrożeniem dla żadnego gatunku, w końcu ilość ogrodów jest ograniczona, był nim natomiast, i jest, popyt ze strony indywidualnych odbiorców – „hodowców” i „kolekcjonerów”, że o świecie mody nie wspomnę. Z drugiej strony, gdyby nie ogrody zoologiczne i farmy, w których się hoduje poszukiwane zwierzęta, niektóre wciąż obecne na Ziemi gatunki już dawno przestałyby istnieć. Podobno obecnie co dwadzieścia minut wymiera jeden gatunek. Nikt o zdrowym umyśle nie będzie upatrywał przyczyn w działalności zoo. Szkoda tylko, że „ekolodzy” jakoś nie chcą się zająć tym, co naprawdę jest przyczyną tej rzezi. No, ale to tylko taka dygresja, wróćmy do lektury i filmu.

Tematyka wychowania psa bez kar i z pomocą klikera jako narzędzia, które to ułatwia, jest niezgłębiona, gdyż każdy pies jest inny i do każdego trzeba podejść indywidualnie. Ponadto każdy właściciel czy treser ma inne wymagania oraz inne możliwości. Ilość problemów, jakie mogą powstać, jest nieograniczona, ale Kliker i załączona płyta The HOW of BOW WOW dają solidne podstawy, by poznać mechanizmy, na których wszystko się opiera i wiedzieć, czego szukać; które z proponowanych, na przykład w sieci, rozwiązań, są prawidłowe, a które nie. Myślę, że dla każdego początkującego wydanie z płytą będzie wartościowym nabytkiem

This book is very basic. If you've literally never even googled "clicker training", then it might be a good place to start. However, I found that the majority of what was covered in this book was stuff that I had already found online, and I'm still pretty new to the clicker training thing myself.

The one good thing that I did get out of it was the chapter that gave tips on shaping specific and common behaviours that you might want - sit & down, loose leash walking, coming when called. I'd actually gotten my recently adopted dog sit-and-downing just before reading this book, but I did so with essentially the same method as suggested by the book so I definitely agree that it works.

Overall, not a bad introduction if you want the basic, basic, basics.

Short, Simple, Effective and Enthusiastic

I am far-reaching this after over a decade since my first exposure to the ideas inside it. It is an excellent introduction to the practice and a little of the theory of clicker training. The ideas that this week book out across so well helped me build a great relationship with my first dog and I'm looking forward to using them again with my new puppy.

Biorąc pod uwagę fakt, iż autorka książki jest "założycielką" treningu z pomocą klikera, myślę że nie ulega wątpliwościom wartość tej książki w historii szkolenia psów i innych zwierząt. Była to moja pierwsza książka o pozytywnym szkoleniu psów i nie zawiodłam się. Dużo można z niej wynieść o podstawach treningi z użyciem klikera, będę polować teraz na "Najpierw wytresuj kurczaka" oraz inne książki dot. szkolenia pozytywnego. Polecam :)!

This was a good introduction to clicker training for dogs. I was able to take some of the lessons and apply them towards teaching and training my dog with success. But, I was also left wanting when it came to problems that came up with clicker training and finding guidance for heeling.

I first read this book in 1999 when it was first printed. Before Clicker Training became popular. It was titled Getting Started----- then. That is exactly what it was intended for. I did my first instructors' course in 1976, in the days of choker chains. This book was exactly what I was looking for. I still recommend it for beginning Clicker Trainers. It is an excellent place to start.
