I have read this book through Basic Life Support (BLS) course by National Health Care Provider Solutions. In spite of my previous study to most of the content in my college but I found this course-and the book for sure-very useful as it provide me with the most recent guidelines.
The Basic Life Support Provider Handbook by Dr.Karl Disque is a very clear and well written overview of how to perform Basic Life Support. Dr. Disque describes the importance of situational awareness as well as protocol for emergency situations, all in a manner that enhances memory. As a lifeguard and someone who aspires to work as a future medic, I found this book particularly interesting. This handbook served as an excellent refresher, and it is written in a very informative literary style. Throughout the handbook situational awareness is emphasized as a crucial factor in performing basic life support procedures. For example, the author states that an automatic external defibrillator should not be used on an individual lying in a puddle and that anyone surrounding the victim should clear if a shock is advised. Automatic external defibrillators are capable of emitting a powerful electric shock, and it is important to follow proper safety precautions when handling electricity. Automated external defibrillators are nearly fool proof, considering the fact that they directly provide step-by-step visual, written, and auditory instructions. However, it can be beneficial to learn about how to use them for safety purposes, effectiveness, and rapid pace. The author clearly states what reactions are appropriate depending on circumstances. Later in the book, Dr. Disque explains how Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on an infant is performed differently than on an adult. For infants the compression to breath ratio is fifteen compressions for every two. Meanwhile, the ratio is thirty to two for children and adults. This piece of information is crucial to infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation because, an infant’s blood circulates through their body faster than an adult. As for rescue breaths, it is important to allow the infant adequate time for a full chest recoil between every rescue breath. Dr.Disque does an excellent job of addressing the importance of situational awareness throughout the handbook. Once the circumstances have been evaluated, it is time for the proper action in response to medical emergencies. Dr.Disque describes in depth the basic life support protocols for various individual situations. When describing the steps to high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the author explains hand placement for the chest compressions “use the heel of one hand on the lower half of the sternum and middle of the chest” (23).The author does not simply state that a rescuer must start compressions on the chest. He explains how the rescuer should place their hands in the proper location of the chest for effective life saving compressions. The hand placement on the chest during cardiopulmonary resuscitation is crucial to the survival of the victim; until more help comes, compressions can mimic some of the essential blood pumping functions of the heart. In another instance Dr. Disque states “When a person of any age has a pulse, but is not breathing (or is not breathing well), immediately open the airway using head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver and begin in rescue breathing. The author explains the important and intricate steps that are very important to any resuscitation effort. Opening the airway of the victim who is in need of rescue breaths, allows the breaths not to be stopped by the relaxed tongue blocking the flow of air through the pharynx and trachea. In addition to Dr. Disque’s in depth information regarding basic life support, he writes in a manner that promotes memory. For example the process for cardiopulmonary resuscitation is repeated several times throughout the book. Repetition allows for better information retention. The author also provides questions to test the reader’s knowledge at the end of every chapter. These questions allow the reader to examine their own understanding of the topic and it helps to resolidify the information, just read. Overall, doctor Disque does an excellent job depicting appropriate circumstances. Overall, Disque does an excellent job depicting appropriate circumstances and protocol for basic life support in a way that promotes substantial informational retention. It is important for people to be familiar with the information provided in this handbook in order to prepare for unexpected medical emergencies. This basic life support book is very clear and straightforward to th point.

I used this book to follow along in a Basic Life Support course. I had not purchased a paperback book and this book was a quick and easy way to have the book to follow along. I would recommend using this book with an in-person CPR course.
