Ok. Now that you’re a little more comfortable, how’s about we stick with the “Paleo” diet for now, ‘cuz it’s so much shorter, alright? Good.
The name comes from what archaeologists claim our distant ancestors ate, the ones who were still nomadic hunters and gatherers.
We’re talking here about a period of time till around 20,000 years ago, a period called the Paleolithic Era.
After the Paleolithic, people started discovering agriculture, and with that, they began settling down in permanent communities, a period called the Neolithic Era.
Our focus here, however, is the Paleolithic, hence the “Paleo” diet, see?
So why this time travel, you ask? Well, geneticists tell us that our genes take between hundreds of thousands of years to about two million, to adapt our metabolism and physiology to a new lifestyle.
So though our ancestors started including grains, legumes and dairy products to their regular diet during the Neolithic period, our bodies are technically still geared to what we used to eat over 20,000 years ago, during the Paleolithic period.
So this is not about going out there to hunt bison with spears and whatnot, and clubbing people over the head just because we think they’re cute. No, no! There are laws against that today.
This is about eating foods our bodies had adapted to up until the end of the Paleolithic period.
