Stephen R. Covey’s books are considered one of the best self-help books ever published by many people.

This book consists of almost all of his famous quotes from his various books. We can read quotes like

“Empathy is not sympathy. A sympathy is a form of agreement. Empathy is not agreeing with someone; it is fully, deeply understanding that person, emotionally as well as intellectually.”

If you are someone who has read all his books, this book will be a nice add-on to your collection.

“A collection of Stephen R. Covey’s most memorable and important teachings, drawn from his bestselling books!”

About the Author:
Recognized as one of Time magazine’s twenty-five most influential Americans, Stephen R. Covey was an internationally respected leadership authority, family expert, teacher, organizational consultant, and author. He sold more than 20 million books in 38 languages, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was named the #1 Most Influential Business Book of the Twentieth Century. After receiving an MBA from Harvard and a Doctorate Degree from Brigham Young University, he became the co-founder and vice chairman of FranklinCovey, the leading global professional services firm.

My thoughts about the book: What a giant of a man Stephen Covey was. And what an appropriate tribute to a man who was and is one of the world’s best-selling authors – book sharing his insight and wisdom for this generation and for ones to come.

There is what I will refer to as 20 chapters in the book. In each and every chapter you will discover in his own words the depth of wisdom that Dr. Covey possessed. Some of the chapters’ principles included in the book are: Accountability, Balance, Choice, Integrity, Leadership, Love, Self Discipline, Trust, Truth, Win/Win and others. The last 2 chapters reveal some of Stephen’s favorite quotes by others and a reference list of books written by him as well as “Other Sources.”

In Chapter 1 titled Accountability the first story is one that is moving, sharing something that took place between Dr. Covey and his then seven-year-old son, also named Stephen. It is a story taken from the pages of his life lived, where his son learned a valuable lesson which would do us all well to learn and that is to take ownership of our lives and be accountable to the people we love and work for. Accountability is not a common or popular word in our world today and sadly it shows in the lives and careers ruined by people not being responsible and accountable. As Stephen wrote, “Accountability breeds response-ability.”

Each chapter begins with a story that illustrates in real time and life the application of the quotes and words of wisdom shared by Dr. Covey in that particular chapter. And words of wisdom they are. It is stated that King Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived next to Jesus Christ himself and I believe that to be true. However, we have been blessed in our generation to have a man like Dr. Covey who somehow knew how to extract out of life’s experiences personal and powerful words of wisdom that speaks to our hearts and motivates us today.

Some of the words of wisdom that Dr. Covey shared include: Concerning Love – “In relationships, the little things are the big things;” Concerning Leadership, “You can’t change the fruit without changing the root;” On Empathy – “Empathy is not sympathy. Sympathy is a form of agreement. Empathy is not agreeing with someone; it is fully, deeply understanding that person, emotionally as well as intellectually.” WOW! Think about that for a while if you will. And I do not think I need to remind you that there is a serious shortage of empathy in our world today. There is, however, plenty of judgmentalism and condemnation to go around – far too much in my opinion, but very little empathy. People today want and desperately need more empathy than ever because of how difficult life is with all of its many challenges.

The Wisdom and Teachings of Stephen R. Covey is a book that will inspire you, encourage, motivate, deeply touch you, (if you will allow his words to do so), and bless you. This book is not a one-time read to be sure. I believe this is a book you read and read again and then refer back to it whenever your motivational get-up-and-go has got-up-and went.

On a personal note, the Word of God is where I always go first to find wisdom, knowledge and insight so that I might know how to live wisely in this present evil age; however, Dr. Covey’s book is on my short list of other books I refer to when I am looking for an inspirational, motivational or wise thought to help me through my day.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Simon and Schuster for the purpose of reviewing it. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

Quotes.

I have been inspired and driven from many of Stephen Covey's books over the years and read many of his books many times over due to the large impact to my life. Many of these concepts are deeply ingrained in my thinking and work style. I first read 7 Habits when I was 16 years old.

I was also lucky enough to manage the Helpdesk of Franklin Covey in 2005 and it was amazing to see a whole, kind, efficient and effective company and family. One of my proudest achievements.

7 Habits, 8th habit and many others.

This audio book is good, but not outstanding as it is just rehashing these books so it felt like a hodgepodge of random parts of all of his books.

Listened at 2x via Libby (2 hour audio).

Having read and studied Covey for decades I found this book to be a lot of repetition, but that was its intent. Was nice to read and revisit some of the sayings that are so familiar yet easily forgotten in original format. If you haven’t read Covey or gone through the 7 Habits this will be confusing. But for those that have this is a good reminder.

Covey's family wrote a book of the father's best teachings. They cover areas such as Vision, Win-Win, Synergy, Living by Principles, and Leadership. The book is a good summary of Covey's writings, and is useful for all people, in all walks of life, anywhere!

I really liked Covey's 7 habits book so I thought this would elaborate more on his "wisdom" but it basically is a Cliff's Notes on his book. I did enjoy being reminded of some of the stories and examples he shared in his book, but I was hoping for some more detail on his thoughts.

The Wisdom & Teachings of Stephen R. Covey is a cool collection of quotes and stories taken not only from his various books but also from speaking engagements, articles, interviews or other materials. The books is divided into chapters focusing on a key principle or segment of life such as Integrity, Leadership, Proactivity, etc.

For those who have previously read any of Dr. Covey's work you will find yourself immediately reminded of the core principles and insights that his works teach. I found myself recognizing a number of the quotes from my readings of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and others. There are a lot of his works that I haven't read and I found quotes and stories from those books ringing just as true and poignant as those I already knew.

For those who haven't read any of Dr. Covey's books or aren't familiar with his work you will likely find familiar advice resonating with you. In some cases this may be due to the fact that many of his principles and teachings have engrained themselves into society. In other cases the seeming familiarity will come because of the simple truthfulness and straightforward nature of the teachings. Sometimes the best advice is the advice that you already knew but didn't realize you knew or didn't know how to articulate.

This book is a wonderful wealth of great teachings and inspiring motivation and thoughts. It would be impossible to boil down all of the great lessons, stories and thoughts from Dr. Covey into a single book but this book comes pretty close and is a great resource for wonderful advice and inspiring thoughts to help make your life better in many ways. This would certainly be a great introduction to Stephen R. Covey for those who don't know his material already and for those who do, this book is a quick batch of well organized notes and snippets of some of his most poignant teachings.

Several years ago I'm so luckily could have read Dr Covey's book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and being influence quite a lot, especially the benefits from focusing and spending most of the time on things that are "Important but not urgent"! And I began to read more books written by Dr Covey.

I really like this book as it summarised many of his wisdom quotations and among those 18 principles I do love the following three quotations from principles of learning, self-discipline and truth.

"The main value of education is not financial or occupational, but it is personal and spiritual and character-building. You can become a better husband and father, mother and wife, and citizen. You learn to think analytically and creatively. You learn to write and communicate clearly and persuasively. You learn how to read with discrimination. You develop a way of thinking about life and problem. Your basic knowledge is deepened and expanded, your horizons lifted. Your ability to sympathize and appreciate is increased. In every way you can become fuller and more integrated, more capable, wiser human being."

"Most people equate discipline with an absence of freedom. In fact, the opposite is true; only the disciplined are truly free. The undisciplined are slaves to mood, appetites, and passions."

"Correct principles are like compasses: They are always pointing the way. And if we know how to read them, we won't get lost, confused, or fooled by conflicting voices and values."

"Center your life on principles. Principles don't react to anything. They won't divorce us or run away with our best friend. They aren't out to get us. They can't pave our way with shortcuts and quick fixes. They don't depend on the behavior of others, the environment, or the current fad for their validity. Principles don't lie. They aren't here one day and gone the next."

5 stars is typically super-crush material, whereas here I can perhaps drift in & out. But for what it is - a very brief & neatly organized volume of quotes from one man's career (well, life) - I just found so much awakening that it'd just be crazy to offer anything less. Either as a one-sitting, or a very short chapter a day, I highly recommend it.

For me it was a nice recap for the lessons i learned in coveys 7 habits last year. For a first time read, the stack of quotes is too dense and misses the backstories / context given in the books they originate from.
