SHADOWS OF FORMER GLORY

Gu Mang is determined to turn over a new leaf and prove to Mo Xi that he’s not the ruthless man he once was. Yet as his old memories return, the shadow of the traitorous General Gu seems to haunt him, raising questions to which he has no answers—both about his defection from Chonghua and his past entanglements with Mo Xi.

As Mo Xi and Gu Mang struggle toward a fragile truce, the pair are summoned for an emergency rescue mission to an island inhabited by demons. But this island is full of buried secrets…including one that may unravel everything Mo Xi and Gu Mang thought they knew about the past.

"I ask you to teach me one last thing. It’s been seventeen years—half our lives so far. Teach me how to let go. Can you teach me how to feel at ease? How do I lose two souls—can mine be missing instead? I still have my memory and my mind; I can’t let go! I knew I couldn’t change a thing upon traveling eight years into the past, but I still wanted to ask you not to defect; I still hoped for you to stay, even if you think it’s all useless! What cross o’er the abyss of suffering, chase no more the past—I’ve lived in the past for eight years! Since the day you left, I’ve lived eight years in the past. I wished so badly for you to recover your memories, but now that you’ve recovered them, you tell me you’ve let go… Gu Mang, Gu-shixiong…in those seventeen years, what was I in your heart?!"

the way the rope kissed my neck

i need meatbun to stop playing the ‘how much more can we make mo xi & gu mang suffer game’ because it is NOT fun to watch. what possessed meatbun to write ”gu mang, gu-shixiong…in those seventeen years, what was i in your heart?” and ”you said you once loved me”

what possessed meatbun to consistently rip all the characters hearts into tiny little pieces???

Volume 3 of Remnants of Filth offered a heartbreak after a heartbreak. I’ll try to review it without great spoilers, but continue at your own discretion.

The story picks up on the burial mountain where Mo Xi is paying respects to his father. Gu Mang, feeling the need to show Mo Xi that he can become a good person again, sets to ask forgiveness in front of all ten thousand graves on the burial mountain. This even though Mo Xi tells him that no matter how good he becomes, he’ll be executed in the end.

And Mo Xi is right: people aren’t swayed by Gu Mang’s show of humility. Things might have continued like they have so far, with Mo Xi frustrated with Gu Mang, whose memory remains poor, but then Yue Chenqing goes missing. The emperor orders Mo Xi to go rescue him with his Fourth Uncle Murong Chui and half-brother Jiang Yexue, and Gu Mang has to come along too. It’s an uncomfortable journey, as Murong Chui and Jiang Yexue don’t get along at all, and Gu Mang remembers some of the more embarrassing things.

They locate Yue Chenqing to an island of bat demons, but the rescue mission goes sideways. In the heat of the battle, Gu Mang and Mo Xi have a chance to observe the events of the past, namely the moment Gu Mang decides to defect.

It’s a revelation in many ways to Mo Xi. He learns things about Gu Mang he had been too young to understand at the time, and gets some insight into why Gu Mang defected, though he has now more questions than before. And he realises exactly how the emperor sees Gu Mang and what his role in Gu Mang’s defection was. All of it is heartbreaking; more so, because Mo Xi has no way to help Gu Mang or console him.

Mo Xi is greatly shaken by what he learns, but since the battle is on, he has no time to reflect. Gu Mang is changed too. But not back to the man Mo Xi knew before. The final heartbreak comes when Mo Xi finally gathers courage to ask Gu Mang if he ever loved him. The book ends before we get the answer. It’ll be an agony to wait for the next volume.

The beginning of the book is still somewhat light-hearted, with Gu Mang recovering his memories piece by piece—some of them led to hilarious moments, with Mo Xi being flustered and blushing.

“I’ve been living with you this whole time, without ever helping you out and always making you mad. Why didn’t you tell me I could make you like me like that?”

The tone becomes much heavier when we finally found out what happened 8 years ago when Gu Mang fell from glory. It’s heartbreaking to see how he was pushed to a corner with no way out.

I, too, once rode a splendid horse,
my flag bid thousands on their course.
One cry dispersed the demon crowd;
godlike, before my feet all bowed.
Today none mark my glories past,
men once called friends all turn their backs.

A lot of things stay a mystery, but this revelation is enough to devastate Mo Xi. My heart breaks to see him struggle again and again.

The agony was such that his heart had all but stopped—a heartrending pain, a bone-breaking pain, stripping flesh from his bones… His heart seemed to be wailing in despair, as if crying out that it really didn’t know how to face love and sin. Might as well just kill him… Might as well just let itself stop beating.

It hurt too much.

I was pretty crossed with Gu Mang when he acted so callous and uncaring towards Mo Xi after his memories recovered. I know he has his own reasons, but please, give that poor guy a break!

5 stars! Perfection!!

This was definitely my favorite of the series so far, just perfect quote after perfect quote. I am glad to see these characters opening up at the end. Hopefully, they will resolve their shit in the next one, but either way, the story is just so engrossing and I can’t wait for the next installment of the series to get here for me to devour in a day or two again.

There are definitely ups and downs and I am a little surprised that they aren't an item at all yet but the plot is just so good. I'm becoming quite picky about what I collect physically because I am running out of space but this will always have a space on my self because of how good it is.

each yuwu volume steadily chips away at my soul… thankfully there’s going to be a happy ending to this (at the very end 🙂). less sad than i expected it would be but there were still some very sad parts.

MO XI 😭😭💔💔💔 i know gu mang had to do what he did for a reason but this is so heartbreaking for mo xi, i actually feel so bad for him, it’s intolerable. he deserves so much… both of them do, but, the ending of this volume made me frustrated with gu mang (even though i was dying about him with his army and his friend a couple of chapters - his breakdown and mo xi being unable to console him was so sad). treat mo xi better 🥹🥹 three more volumes of more angst… im scared.

“i think i liked it. it felt really good.“ he looked up, his face still tinged with the flush brought on by those memories. “it seemed like you needed me.”

mo xi immediately stilled.

“it’s good… to be needed by someone,” gu mang said softly for someone to get happiness from me, not because of hatred or venting – that felt so good.”

💔

“i just want you to be well,” mo xi rested his chin on the top of gu mang’s head as he held him tight. “if there’s any sadness or grievance in your heart, won’t you tell me?” mo xi asked hoarsely. “could you let me share the burden? could you not overthink it? don’t bear it alone…”

i. want. to. show. you. my. heart. 🙂

"Time can only bring me your [Gu Mang's] ruins." - Mo Xi.

Anything that can make me cry as much as this does is a five-star read. Revelations keep wreaking havoc in Mo Xi's battered heart, and I truly don't know how much more heartbreak he, or I, can take. The emperor is a piece of trash, Murong Lian even more so. The whole messed-up dynamic between Jiang Yexue, Murong Chuyi, and Yue Chenqin makes me want to scream. I literally don't understand how JY can continue to be so caring when all he gets from MC and YC is disdain.

Gu Mang breaks my heart, and the whole Time Mirror sequence had me crying more often than not. Still, it makes me even sadder how he treats Mo Xi so coldly while calling him perfect and then throwing the most cruel lines his way afterward. The fact that Mo Xi asked him to teach him how to forget and be at ease because he's learned everything from him had me with rivers streaming down my face. Again, it's not just the last eight years of emotional torture and loss, it's the seventeen in total in which Gu Mang made his way into his life and irrevocably stole his heart.

I also appreciated the nods that tie this story to 2HA's world. They're nice little easter eggs if you've read both. Can't wait to continue willingly splitting my heart in two since I have the fourth volume already.

This appears to be one of those books that gets better with every volume! Lots of interesting developments and layers of mystery in this volume. Gu Mang’s been a blank slate up to this point without a strong sense of presence so I’m looking forward to finally getting to meet one of the main characters lol

After reading this volume, Remnants is my new favorite series by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou. Honestly, the writing just seems more mature than even The Husky and his White Cat Shizun, especially whatever messed up plot ultimately caused Gu Mang to defect. Because there is a ton more to unpack there (obviously) but I have a feeling the Emperor is going to be at the center of it and I hope they get to take him out, because quite frankly he's a jerk.

The relationship between Gu Mang and Mo Xi is so freaking heartbreaking and complicated, though. There is definitely this feeling that if Mo Xi had maybe tried to be *less* of a noble before Gu Mang's defection, none of this would have even happened. While I understand Mo Xi's feelings in terms of Lu Zhanxing's role in this whole mess, I don't necessarily think Lu was entirely *wrong*. What I do think is that everyone around Gu Mang should stop making decisions for him, Mo Xi included. That being said, I don't think Mo Xi has had a full wake-up call yet, and I definitely think that Gu Mang is still hiding a lot. Like a lot, a lot. I'm not buying that he's only got some fragments from the timeframe he had defected.

That last chapter, though? Oh dear gods, just stomp on my heart a bit more why don't you? I know I should have bought volume 4 at the same time now. I've got to wait a few days, and it's going to be a painful few days 😭
