Yokai Curse by Lorelei Balansa is an enchanting and suspenseful tale rooted in Japanese folklore, blending elements of mystery, friendship, and vengeance. The story revolves around two childhood friends, Evitti and Fujiko, whose playful antics take a dark turn when a prank gone wrong curses Fujiko into becoming a fox. Years later, the once playful bond between them has twisted into a relentless pursuit, with Fujiko seeking revenge on Evitti.

Balansa does an excellent job of weaving traditional Japanese yokai mythology into a compelling narrative that keeps readers on edge. The introduction of Mihiro, another victim of the curse, adds depth to the story, creating an intriguing dynamic between him and Evitti as they search for a way to break the curse.

The book’s pacing is brisk, with tension mounting as Fujiko closes in on her former friend. The author’s vivid descriptions bring the setting to life, immersing readers in a world where the supernatural feels tangibly real. While the plot is straightforward, the emotional undertones of guilt, fear, and redemption add layers to the characters, making them more than just figures in a folklore-inspired adventure.

Yokai Curse is a captivating read for fans of supernatural tales and Japanese mythology, offering a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Balansa’s ability to craft a tale of friendship turned to enmity, set against a backdrop of myth and magic, makes this book a worthwhile addition to the genre.
