What's better than one hot cowboy? Well, two of them, of course! Lucky Albright hasn't been so lucky lately. She was run out of town and is homeless, broke and out of gas. Lucky for her she's near the Ugly Stick Saloon. The owner of the Ugly Stick has a fondness for damsels in distress and takes Lucky under her wing.
After accepting a job offer to work at the Ugly Stick, Lucky is also hired on as a hand at the Triple J Ranch to do the work she really loves most. Trent and Isaac Jameson co-own the ranch and they both want Lucky. She won't make a choice between the two men. If they won't agree to share her she'll walk and not come back.
Boots & Twisters is filled with hot, sexy time and so many misfortunes for Lucky that I was kept totally entertained. Myla Jackson (aka Elle James) knows just how to keep her characters on the edge give them the HEA that they so deserve after what they go through.
The Ugly Stick Saloon books are all great and I really enjoy this series.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
Boots And Twisters is a fantastic quick read by Myla Jackson. Lucky lands in Temptation, TX with a trail of bad luck following her. Trent and Isaac have Lucky work on their ranch as she works nights at the Ugly Stick Saloon to pay back the owner for damage to her truck. Bad luck is still nipping at her heels though. Lucky, Trent and Isaac's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. Boots & Twisters is book 7 of the Ugly Stick Saloon Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.
I read a print copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received this copy as part of a blog tour/from the author Myla Jackson, in exchange for an honest review.
The Review
I LOVED the book. In fact I couldn’t put it down from start to finish! I adored Lucky, she was a strong female character, which I require in a book for me to enjoy reading it!
Lucky runs out of gas in the parking lot of the Ugly Stick Saloon. She’s anything but lucky. In fact she had been ran out of her home and the town she lived, when the people there thought she was bringing horrible luck to them! Which bad things HAD been happening. Such as the library burning down and someone running their truck into the side of a historical building. Lucky just happened to be in the area of all the things that were happening. Did this mean it was her fault or she was bad luck? It doesn’t really go into detail, so we are left to wonder the events that led up to these incidents.
When she runs out of gas, she’s parked behind other vehicles. So she proceeds to rectify that, which in turn sets off a chain of events! When it’s all said and done, she knows she needs to approach whoever it is she wronged, to make things right. That’s when she meets Trent. At first people thought she was a man, since she was dressed as one. Trent however seen right through the facade and pinned her to the wall. They were both extremely attracted to each other, but Lucky was on a mission to find someone specific. Trent said he’d let her go for a kiss. Would Lucky pay his price? Or did she have other means of getting away?
Once she had finished with Trent, she found the owner of the Saloon. One thing led to another and there were a LOT of unlucky events, but Lucky was able to find work as a ranch hand on a ranch owned by an equally sexy man, named Isaac. He offered her a place to stay as well. He had a co-owner of the ranch, who she’d meet later. Lucky had been so alone and she felt such a strong connection with Isaac. But he was now her boss….
My final thoughts: I flippin’ loved this book! I’d definitely read more from this author. However I have to be honest and say I DID have some issues with the story.
•In the beginning, Lucky is written as a character with little sexual experience, yet she really comes alive fast! •The “Sweet Tea and Grits!” moments…ugh. It makes her sound ridiculous and an over exaggeration of her being a southerner. I found it to be a distraction from the story. •After the tornado. What happens, while the biggest prude of the town, who called her a whore and everyone else, watched. I understand things had changed, but I find it hard to believe they’d changed THAT much! I felt the audience should have been removed from the area beforehand.
Tomboy Lucky is anything but from the moment this story starts as bad things follow her wherever she goes. After being chased out of the town where she thought she'd made a home, an empty gas tank leaves her stranded at the Ugly Stick Saloon where a damaged truck and ruined cases of liquor has her falling into the arms of two brothers where she might just find a permanent home. Lucky is at first overwhelmed by the brothers fighting over her but soon decides to take control of her life and make a home of her own choosing with both Tristan and Isaac. Lucky is rather naive when it comes to matters of sex, but is extremely kind-hearted and desirous of doing what's right which is why she's so conflicted when it comes to the brothers.
Tristan and Isaac are just trying to keep their ranch running while juggling their regular jobs. In dire need of help Lucky looks to be the woman of their dreams in more than one way but their attraction to her soon leads to conflict that can only be resolved unconventionally. Isaac is the kinder and more carefree of the brothers, the more open-minded to them both claiming Lucky. Tristan is the quieter and angrier brother because of his father's abuse which leaves him hating the ranch and what it represents. He wants Lucky all to himself but wants to give her whatever she desires at the same time. It's not until he realizes that having her in any way he can, along with the ranch, brings him the satisfaction he tried to find throughout all the years he was gone. Both brothers are sexy and charming though which makes Lucky's dilemma understandable and her solution immensely satisfying.
This was a fast-paced read where one over-the-top catastrophe befell Lucky after another. These events became more frustrating rather than endearing and I'm glad they tapered off as the story progressed. The sexual tension surrounding this trio was apparent from the start and their relationship evolved slowly to an ending that unfortunately didn't really address the long-term issues regarding their togetherness. The sexual interludes were hot with each brother's distinctions very apparent. Small town living with all its colorful characters was clearly on display and brought even more bits of humor to the story. This was an entertaining, if not too in-depth story, that was a satisfying addition to the Ugly Stick Saloon series and reunited us once again with the proprietress who started it all.
This adult read comes from an author with a sense of humour and a flair for the dramatic.
Lucky Albright drives into Temptation, Texas with hopes of finding work, but runs out of gas and has an accident involving a new pickup truck belonging to the lady bar owner. Lucky - well, she hasn't been so lucky in life. She's best working on a ranch in comfortable denims but she's desperate enough to take almost any job.
Men are being catcalled and pinched by women in the Ugly Stick saloon tonight, for there is a ladies' only strip show and the male dancers are putting on a good turn. Lucky happens to smash some bottles in the stock room while asking for a job. Nobody is hurt so far, but she'll have to pay a lot back from her wages.
Then Trent and Isaac meet her. They've inherited their father's ranch and one wants to keep it, the other to sell. There's a lot of on-going work and they can't cope themselves. One lad offers Lucky a job as ranch hand, and matters take off from there, with both brothers fancying the pants off the girl and Lucky, unused to male admiration, determined to be an independent woman.
The town gets a five-minute tornado warning and some people cope better than others. My money's on Lucky.
Trent & Isaac Jameson are dire need of a ranch hand.
Lucky Albright, despite her name, has been on the receiving end of some seriously bad luck of late. She was chased out of her last town of residence after accidentally setting the public library on fire. Now she finds herself in Temptation, TX. Her gas tank's on "E" & coasts into the Ugly Stick Saloon parking lot.
I normally give the books in this series 3 stars because I tend not to care for the "shock jock" approach to sex scenes, but this one was more tolerable. I think because there was a bit more story than sex, more humor mixed in, multiple jobs to balance and an overall cohesiveness that seemed to be there from nearly the beginning.
I actually would give this one a solid 3.5, but am feeling generous today. :)
Loved this book, Lucky and her disastrous luck had me chuckling in places. The characters were immediately likeable, I just wished that the story had been a little longer - I was sad when it was finished.
Lucky finds herself broke and out of gas in a new town. A whole heap of unfortunate events seem to follow her around apart from her good fortune of meeting Isaac and Trent.
A good fun read with a brilliant cast of characters, can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I couldn't help but feel sorry for Lucky as she hit the town of Temptation Texas. I also couldn't help but belly laugh at the situations she found her self in. I just love this little town of Temptation and their local club The Ugly Stick. Each time I revisit the town I find that the locals and the newbies capture my heart. I love each time I get to visit The Ugly Stick Saloon.
