Imagination, science, and ice cream combine in this adventurous story about a mom who promises her son an ice cream sundae. When your mom is a scientist, sometimes you have to wait for an experiment to finish or a bright idea to be investigated. But, when a mom promises her son a sundae, you can be sure he won’t forget.
He tries not to be too impatient while waiting for the promised ice cream trip. In between his mom’s scientific explanations, he drops a few not-so-subtle hits and finally gets his ice cream trip along with an out-of-this-world story of a world where everything is ice cream.
This is such a great story of the love between a mom and her son who connect over science and ice cream. Among the silliness and over-the-top adventure is the underlying theme of a loving relationship between parent and child, the joy of a trip to an ice cream shop, and a vivid imagination to go along on the trip. Andy’s illustrations are the cherry on top of this great book!
It's.....fine. But that's about as far as it goes.
I wanted to love it: time travel, a universe of bowls, ICE CREAM.....but I am picturing audiences and I just don't think it will be received the way I would hope for.
A young boy begs his scientist-mother for an ice cream sundae with everything on it. She pushes a few buttons on a new invention and the two find themselves blasting to other universes that each have one item special. They end up visiting several in order to make the perfect sundae (bowls, spoons, ice cream, toppings, etc.) and then return home where they have everything in one place.
Scheele's story feels a bit contrived, but logical. This is the kind of story that will appeal to kids who love, love, love ice cream and other sweet treats and those that love science fiction without very much depth.
Illustrations by Andy J. Pizza were rendered in gouache, pencil, and digital collage. They are an interesting combination of bright colors and pastels. Outlines are done in pastel colors, making it have a floating (not down-to-earth) feeling.
A great mother and son adventure geared to kids age 5-8 but I could see this story still being fun read to a younger audience as well. Very imaginative and with vibrant contemporary artwork.
My hardcover copy came with a dust jacket and I actually like the artwork on the cover of the book under the jacket more than the jacket but thats me. The storyline was easy to follow and the book is short enough to keep the attention of a younger reader.
The book itself felt sturdy and good quality. Pages are not delicate.
A companion to A Pizza With Everything On it, but not as good. I liked the concept-- quantum physicist mom and a journey to alternate universes (namely the universe of bowls and ice cream), but it was harder to follow and not as funny as Pizza with Everything On it. I hope this team imagines an entirely different concept for their next book, because I do love the general ideas and the fun and appealing art.

10 stars! This book is enchanting! A fun and colorful book that will spark the imagination of young children. It is also a good book for early readers to practice their developing reading and vocabulary skills. Thank you to Goodreads for the privilege of reading a delightful children's book in exchange for a review.
3.5? A confection that could lead to imaginative questions: if you could visit a universe where everything was made of just one thing, what would you want yours made of? Ice cream themed storytime potential.
The pizza one was better - this one just felt... forced. I didn't even delight in the toppings (which didn't show up until the end). I'm not even sure the message really. Pass. Cute illustrations though.
Super busy illustrations show that sometimes you can get more than you bargained for when you ask for a sundae with everything on it, especially if your mom is a literalist super-genius scientist with access to the multiverse. It takes a lot of universes to make a turtle sundae, but the journey is worth it!
Cute but not quite what I thought it would be from the cover and title. Kid and mom go traveling through the multiverse to collect bowls, ice cream, and toppings before returning home.
It's super loud on every page and the illustrations distract from the story of a boy and his super smart science mom travel around dimensions to gather all the ingredients for sundaes.
