Rate this book
When Marshal Flint Maddox stumbles upon the gruesome sight of his best friend murdered in a cornfield, it triggers the K5 PROTOCOL, a dangerous and long dormant neural implant. He comes fact-to-face with the brutal past he left years ago and the memory of monsters who tried to kill him. Unable to catch the aliens before they leave the planet with his friend’s daughter, he deputizes a posse of four androids and steals a ship.

Maddox and his unlikely crew embark on a desperate galactic hunt filled with treacherous wormholes, feminine betrayal, and aliens who consider humans an expendable race. Driven to find the girl, Maddox extracts a dying alien’s confession that reveals an underlying plot of horrific proportions—that if the details become known—will rock the galaxy.

From a once great Earth to the utopian world of Anterra to the ice planet of Deggres 9 to the strange Outer Rim Territories, you will ride along with Galactic Marshal Maddox and his crew. But buckle up—because you’re in for a thrilling, heart-pounding, nail-biting, but well worth waiting for… Ending!

The K5 Protocol reads and listens like Terminator meets The Magnificent Seven in space, and I can assure you that’s a good thing! With the audiobook narration superbly maintaining the pace and excitement, the central character, Marshall Flint Maddox, rides roughshod over monsters, both alien and human, in search of kidnapped children and the killers of his best friend. Aided by an artificial crew with more personality than any human, he enlists the help of a variety of law-abiding citizens along the way as his K5 Protocol triggers and he kicks enemy backside from one end of the galaxy to the other. Strap in, it’s some ride.

A fast paced adventure, with an old-school hero.

This is a character with a straightforward arc, even as the plot doubles back and the antagonists shift. Maddox is driven by anger and revenge, literally wired to be a hunter-killer, and wielding the authority and experience to get away with murder. The only thing that keeps his gun in its holster—sometimes—is the need to do what's right. Occasionally, that's his duty as a Marshall, other times his duty only gets in the way. When the author draws blatant parallels with an Old West gunslinger, it somehow doesn't cheapen it. Who else would you set loose on the scoundrels who hurt women and children?

The author successfully walks that fine line between over and under-describing alien species, going into slightly more detail with subsequent encounters. This was done more deftly with the Vekonis, the main enemy early on. A few others needed a bit more or else probably didn't need to be mentioned at all. There is a jarring leap forward in time between chapters one and two, but this stands alone as the single issue in the book that made me flip back to resolve. It's well plotted and tightly edited.

THE K5 PROTOCOL immerses us immediately in the heart of action as K5 agent Julian Flint Maddox fights for his life, pursued by baddies against the backdrop of a scorching red dwarf planet. This book could be used as a lesson in exemplary worldbuilding; even though we're dropped as readers in an unknown galaxy, Stone does an outstanding job with descriptions and details that I bought into this new galaxy and its numerous species quickly. Maddox is described as more cyborg than human after decades of modifications as a mercenary agent, but he's human enough to be driven by dedication and moral as well as by rage and revenge, and turned out to be a gritty gun-slinging protagonist I enjoyed rooting for. There are some issues with tense shifts, the dialogue is sometimes clunky, and I couldn't always place myself in new sections and chapters, but the issues are minor and nothing a solid proofreader couldn't fix. All in all, K5 PROTOCOL is a swashbuckling space adventure and sci-fi thriller sure to delight fans of the genre!

I was impressed by this author, especially after checking out some of her other books that I did not know about. This is a fun read with some great humor and plenty of adventure built into it. It kind of reminds me of a blend of Star Wars or Star Trek mixed with the cult favorite TV show Firefly and its movie finale. The alien races are quite interesting, and I found myself pretty immersed in this world. Flint Maddox has an interesting and quirky group of friends that he gets up with to mount a daring rescue and get his revenge. Lots of interesting technology and I liked the stories around the Vekonis people. The author shines in this genre, and I love space stories with some of that old school Western cowboy feel, reminiscent of the Star Wars cantina or Malcolm Reynolds of Serenity. Highly recommended if you enjoy sci-fi in that gritty, darkly humorous vein.

K5 PROTOCOL is a pulpy piece of light science fiction/action-adventure that occasionally reminded me of the old Han Solo books from Del Ray, and sometimes even made me think of Robert A. Heinlein. The story follows Flint, rugged manly man and employee of IDNT corporation's security division. Flint has a past, and it catches up to him early on in the novel. In an attempt to rescue the daughter of a friend, Flint goes on a galaxy spanning adventure with four androids in a stolen craft. There's action, betrayal, and romance along the way. The prose has some personality, and the author's fondness for the genre is evident. Recommended for fans of sci-fi adventure of previous days.

The K5 PROTOCOL by Andria Stone is a militaristic Scifi action thriller. Marshal Flint Maddox‘s neural implant is activated and long buried memories begin to surface. Flint must avenge his friend’s murder and go after the aliens who’ve kidnapped his deceased friends’ daughter. He and his ragtag team are reminiscent of the Star Wars gang of androids and humanoids. They go on an intergalactic adventure and learn more than they bargained for in this action-packed techno quest for the truth. Andria Stone is a master of the genre and her world building is first class. I was totally invested in the characters, their environment and their mission. Recommended - 4.5 stars!

The K5 PROTOCOL: A Science Fiction Technol Thriller was a lot of fun to read! I loved the imaginative descriptions of different alien worlds and constant action. Flint’s character was well-developed as was his cyborg-ness. I think I enjoyed the book mostly for Flint’s unwavering devotion to purpose in the face of never-ending obstacles. Weirdly, although I personally am not even close to being like Flint, I felt I could identify with him on some level.

BORING!!! I thought this might be something like the author’s ‘Edge’ series, but it’s a total disappointment. :(
