Managing is truly a gift and skill set that is not easy “to learn” just by taking a class or two in the subject. Managing effectively has to be intentional and comes from practicing It! Concepts of Managing is a practical guide to managing people from a tremendous person who spent his entire career as an excellent leader, manager, director, and motivator in several types of companies and in different operations roles. This is a great read for anyone who manages people in any industry! It strikes me as the best “what they didn’t teach me in business school” book that I’ve read. The style of using short vignette stories enables one to pick it up, read some, then pick it up later, and read more at your own pace in this increasingly “instantaneous response” world. I highly recommend this to those starting out as new supervisors or managers all the way up to C-Level executives who need a refresher on managing people and with humility.

As a retired Chief Supply Chain Officer for numerous retail and supply chain organizations, it was amazing how much I learned from reading the Concepts of Managing by Ron Harris. His direct and partnership approach to planning, partnering, managing and leading through difficult situations was on target and refreshing. He is clearly a great mentor, leader, coach and student of getting results, as this book demonstrates. I particularly enjoyed his self-appraisal in some of his examples, turning real life problems into fun examples and honest evaluations. Excellent read.

I really wish I had been able to read this excellent book at the beginning of my career instead of at the end. It is full of advice that would have helped me avoid some of the pitfalls that caused me unneccessary headaches. I am primarily a reader of literature and, to my own detriment, avoided reading business books, but this one was both painless and entertaining as well as providing solid advice on achieving career success. I had the privilege of working with the author at one of the assignments he references in the book and I can attest that Ron Harris speaks from both wisdom and experience. He was a leader of integrity and it was an honor to learn from him. It was also an honor to read his book. I heartily recommend this book, especially to early and mid-career managers. It will definitely make them better employees and more successful leaders.
