A very distinctive and beautiful read. This is not any ordinary children’s picture book rather it teaches big important life lessons to children as well as adults in a very unique way.
It’s a story about a young Rhombus, who lives in a small house with its parents. One day he meets Maxine and he notices that she lives in a big house. He gets upset and wishes to live in a big house as well. But when he finds out that Maxine was adopted and isn’t happy with her life he instantly regrets it.
This book teaches important lessons that we shouldn’t compare our lives with others and we should always be grateful for what we have.
The storyline, illustrations and content are outstanding. I’m highly impressed by Rella’s writing. I definitely recommend this one.
I received an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Young rhombuses live with their parents, triangle (mom) and square (dad). With relatives of different shapes and sizes, rhombus sees things a little differently. But when they go to school, they see friends and classmates of different colors and designs. A unique picture book on being true to yourself and being open to other's shapes and sizes. "If Shapes Could Talk" shows young readers that being different is okay. What shape do you see yourself as?
If Shapes Could Talk was a big hit! It is a story about mixed families (different shapes and designs) as well as coveting what others have while failing to see the bigger picture It teaches multiple lessons to the reader and it is done in a way that is easy for them to comprehend She read multiple times (I read the words she did the shapes and designs)
This book was absolutely adorable! I love that there is multiple lessons being taught. This book will help your little one learn shapes and also help them learn that all families are different. I love that it shows to be thankful for what you have. The book also rhymes. It’s super precious. I highly recommend this book for your little ones.
Thank you Netgalley and Victory Editing Netgalley Co-Op for gifting me this adorable book.
I do like the premise of the book. I appreciated that it highlighted different types of families and how comparison steals joy. I did not like the way the book portrayed adoption as a loss. The book did not even address the adoptive parents. For that reason, I would not recommend it. It generalized adoption in a way that I was not comfortable with to highlight the lesson of comparison.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If Shapes Could Talk is a cute illustrated book in rhyming verse by Rella B. Released 24th Oct 2023, it's 40 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.
The illustrations throughout are cute, colorful, and full of small details which invite readers to spend a little more time looking at the pictures and thinking about the text. The story has thought provoking takeaways about comparing ourselves to others, the dangers of jealousy, and what it means to be a friend.
The text is very simple and should be accessible to even the youngest readers. The characters are diverse and have different shapes and colors which are mirrored in the descriptions.

If Shapes Could Talk is the first book in the Shapes series by Rella B. This is a cute story that holds a message and lessons to learn along the way. It also has a rhyming rhythm which adds an extra element of interest to the story. We meet Riley Rhombus and follow along as she imparts lessons of gratitude, diversity, inclusion, acceptance- self acceptance/accepting all shapes and sizes, family, friendship, not comparing ourselves to others, we don’t really know what others have been through/experienced in their life, acknowledging when we are wrong and apologizing, taking responsibility - while teaching about all the different shapes, colours, designs, and touching on adoption (although I wish that ‘adoption’ was shown in a better light than the way it was portrayed here, even though I’m sure the author didn’t mean for it to come across as a ‘negative’ thing). The story is accompanied by lots of lovely, bright, colourful, interesting, and engaging illustrations — which help to bring the whole story to life. Easy to read. Educational. Fun. Interesting. A cast of endearing shapes. Lovely illustrations. Cute story. Well worth the read. Happy Reading…

This is a delightful little story which introduces young readers to a wide range of shapes in a colourful and interesting manner.
The different shapes in their considerable variety are introduced as a set of family members.
But then the MC finds herself unfairly comparing her shape and design to others without realising that she may be envying someone who has far more serious problems than she knows.
The adorable illustrations deliver an important message about the validity of superficial judgements, and the need to avoid comparisons in the interest of happiness. Recommended for young readers.
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review
A quickly-read book here, that's well worth considering. The piece starts off by looking at shapes – we get a fair few mentioned, and you think you're in the company of a brightly-coloured early geometry lesson, but no. For our purple rhombus – child of a red triangle mother and blue square father, so even the colour blending is thought of – starts to befriend a schoolmate from a different kind of life, and makes some quick, rash, jealous assumptions. But all comes out fine in the end, with a speedily-conveyed lesson. It's not brilliant, but it's not flawed in anything like a major way, and as I say I have to applaud it for seeming to be one thing and yet still managing a rhymed narrative that takes it to very different corners of the preschool library. A strong four stars.
This was such a very cute children's story. Being a former nursery school teacher and mom, I still love finding new children’s stories that serve a great learning tool in children’s basic skills for academics and also valuable emotional intelligence type material as well. Great exposure to different shapes and textures in the characters of the story and learning how each one is different. Also great family related content for children to learn from. Even at such a young age, children will compare themselves to those who have a different, “better” life and unbeknownst to them, it is not as always as it appears to be. Great addition for older preschool and young elementary classrooms as well as homes too!
“If Shapes Could Talk” by Rella B. is a delightful tale that immerses readers in a whimsical world where shapes symbolize families. Through its charming narrative and captivating illustrations, the book gently introduces children to the concept of family diversity and the significance of gratitude for the love and support of one’s family. As Rhombus explores the world around him, he encounters families of various shapes and sizes, learning valuable lessons about acceptance and appreciation for differences. The story beautifully conveys the message that everyone is unique and deserving of kindness, regardless of outward appearances.
3.5 stars If Shapes Could Talk is a unique picture book featuring a family of various shapes. Each character is different in size and form, yet they all fit together because they are a family. Their love for each other transcends appearances, mirroring the diversity of families today. This story not only entertains but also teaches important morals to young readers while helping them identify shapes, colours, and more. The illustrations are simple yet charming, bringing the story to life in a delightful way, and it is written in a rhyming format. Join young Rhombus on a heartwarming journey as she learns to appreciate her loved ones, embrace acceptance, and value what she has.
This book is a fun and colourful way of teaching kids that families come in all shapes and sizes. I loved the fact that this story was told from the perspective of shapes, which is not something we have seen before in a kids book. For me, this meant that not only did my kids learn such an invaluable lesson, they were also able to reinforce their learning of shapes. This book was better suited to my youngest, who is in pre-school, but even my oldest found this to be enjoyable. It is a fun, easy to read and fully entertaining story. We spent ages on each page as we looked at each shape in detail and had to name all of them. This book is truly engaging and was such a pleasure to read.
This is an excellent book for kids about appreciating that families come in all shapes and sizes. Rhombus is jealous of her friend Maxine Hexagon's family and home, until she realizes that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Rhombus is jealous of Maxine's home and pool, until she learns that Maxine is adopted into her family, and misses her birth parents. This is truly a great book for young children about compassion and remembering to be thankful for their loved ones. The rhyming keeps it interesting and fun, while the illustrations and bright colors make it engaging enough for any reader.
While this was a relatively new author for us, we loved the first book by them so much that there was zero hesitation in picking this one up. The way that the words flow and rhyme together makes it easy to bop along to the story. I love the way the author was able to incorporate such important lessons into the book without making it too heavy. It sparked some great conversations between me and both of my kiddos, and I’m very grateful for that! The grass always seems greener on the other side, but once you realize it’s an illusion, it makes it easier to be thankful for what you have. This would make a perfect addition to the school library, classroom, and even at home!
If shapes could talk, what would that sound like? Your mom would be a red triangle and your dad would be a blue square. See how a rhombus describes his family and life…in shapes.
“I love my shapely family!”
The pictures were so cute and colorful—so simple and geometric. But what happens when the rhombus notices the differences in others? I mean, hexagons and polka dots? Wowza!
This is a good way for kids to learn about shapes and colors. But it’s also a good way to teach kids to be happy with what they have. After all, “comparison is the enemy of joy.”
"If Shapes Could Talk" by Rella B. is a delightful children's book that combines fantastic illustrations with a heartwarming storyline about the importance of gratitude. The vibrant and engaging pictures captivate young readers, making it a visual treat for kids. As the story unfolds, it beautifully conveys the message of appreciating what we have, a valuable lesson for children. This book is a wonderful addition to any child's reading list, offering both entertainment and a meaningful message.
Absolutely wonderful job done by Rella as she has used shapes to curate a meaningful storyline where she talks about two friends Rhombus and Maxine. Rhombus loves Maxine’s lifestyle and wishes to have the same as her but little does he know that Maxine’s life is so hard. When he discovers the truth he instantly regrets it and becomes grateful for everything he has been blessed with. Such books teach kids to be thankful from a very early age so they do not complain when they grow up. One might have something that you don’t have but vice versa can be the case too.
What a cute and incredible kids’ story about family and shapes. My kids loved reading it and learning that not all families are the same, which they do know from school, but they still enjoyed it. it shows the diversity of families, and everyone’s situation is different. The pictures were very vibrant and illustrated very well to go with the story line. This book was very engaging and educational with also following with shapes and colors along with the family aspect. This book was a wonderful kids book to encourage what families can look like and be.
Riley Rhombus introduces us to her very colorful family. Her family consists of all different shapes. However, her hexagon friend, Maxine, has stripes and dots and all kinds of cool stuff at her house. When she tells Maxine how she wishes she lived there, Maxine told her family secret. She learned that it’s not what you own that makes you happy; it’s your family and friends. This is such a cute story to help children relate and understand to gratitude. The illustrations are so colorful and draws your attention. It’s also educational in helping children learn shapes and colors.
If Shapes Could Talk by Rella B. and illustrated by Wenny S. is a wonderful children's book that helps little ones not only learn the different shapes, but also different fundamental lessons such as being different from others isn't a bad thing, and something to celebrate! I absolutely recommend this for parents who want there children to grow up understanding diversity, jealousy, gratitude, and what being a good friend means. Overall, this book is thought provoking, wonderfully illustrated, and engaging.
Riley is a Rhombus, a shape who is loved by her family and friends, she lives in a cute house with a lovely garden and enjoys going to school.
One day Riley goes to visit her friend and sees what she has and is jealous, but what will happen when Riley expresses this emotion and compares her life with her friends?
This is a wonderful book which talks about families and friendships and how not everything is what you perceived it to be and how being unique is a good thing too with charming illustrations alongside.
