A Cat's Guide to Preventing Oblivion

Rate this book
Darkness Remains Undefeated

Ben the dragon riding Bengal cat and his allies managed to defeat the dark force at its own game. Since then, Cana Dei, and those who serve it have been in hiding.

Meanwhile, the teenaged prodigy Seramina, who was destined to break the worlds is now safely under lock and seal. And the mighty Dragoncat is training a whole army of dragon-riding and magic-wielding cats for the final battle. Alas, they’re not very good at magic, and Cana Dei is undefeatable without it.

It will take a terrifying premonition, delivered by fortune-telling crystals, for them all to realise that they need to up their game.

Because Cana Dei has prepared a spell that will shatter the dimensions.

In other words, oblivion is nigh.

“A Cat’s Guide to Preventing Oblivion” is the ninth and final novel in the Dragoncat series of fun and child-friendly dragon riding adventures where not only humans befriend dragons, but cats (and a dog) too.

A satisfying finish, albeit sad in that a beloved character passes away heroically and another
turns out to be a traitor but at the end also
heroically sacrifices herself to save another.

Cana Dei is set to annihilate life on all dimensions
unless the people, animals, and other living things
embrace the dark powers which it is. Ben and his allies are raising an army to go against the warlocks
who are under Cana Dei’s influence and try and stop them. Ben is charged with trying to get a bunch of cats ready to ride dragons and learn how to wield magic. Together with humans they work and plan for the final battle that will decide whether they will live or whether they will die.

This is an exciting, edge of your seat fantasy journey full of self doubt from our heroes as they struggle to
accept what fate has chosen to place in front of them. There is heartache as in any battle some must die and sacrifices for the greater good must be made and this is done in two instances. The second time has a unexpected outcome, however.

Ben has come a long way from being a cocky cat whisked away from his home in South Wales in the first book so long ago by a warlock and all the experiences he has had since then and the wisdom his dragon Salanraja has tried to instill in him over these past nine books. It took a long time for any of that knowledge to finally seep into his thick head!

There is plenty of action and adventure and tears that you’ll shed if you’ve read this series thus far.
Evil, like it is in reality is so pervasive that it seems that it can’t lose but that’s when we have to suck it up and give it everything we’ve got because the alternative is too awful to contemplate!

I enjoyed this final book in this series and recommend you read this entire series- otherwise you’ll miss so much good advice and exciting adventures along the way!

Who would have thought of the adventures a cat and a dragon would share once they were bonded together and could fly together and speak to each other through a mind link would be so interesting! Not only that but to have the fate of all the worlds in the hands, paws and claws of humans, cats and dragons makes for some exciting reading !!

Wow, I can't believe this great series is ending! I've really enjoyed it (I do love kitty cats, after all!).

Chris is excellent at getting "inside" his characters. The series was narrated by a cat, & it totally worked.

One thing that cracks me up, is that Ben the main cat character, loves to brag that his Father, George was a fierce & brave cat. Ironically, my cat is also named George, & he's just a big goof!

There was a brief hint at the very end that we MAY not be seeing the last of these characters. I would like that, as I feel like I know several of them.

Would it be a spoiler if I told you that the good guys win in the end? (I won't tell you how though; as I think most readers would have guessed that early on!)

A couple more things I really like:

1. I am a senior, & when reviewing ARC box sets, I often find myself lost if the author takes significant time between books. That did NOT happen here. Both, Chris does write pretty fast, & more importantly the majority of the plot stayed with me.

2. It nice to see young adult supernatural that isn't one big sex scene. Totally appropriate for all ages who's reading skills are at a high enough level (6 or 7th grade?). This is NOT a children's book by any means, & I am not a prude who is opposed tp adult material. I just feel it isn't appropriate in non Satanic paranormal books, & the author obviously agreed. I mention that simply as a compliment; it refreshing.

3. We really get to see several of the character emotionally grow up throughout the course of the 9 (!) books.

If you can't tell, I highly recommend this (I almost never give 5 stars to a book or series); & it would be cool for someone who hasn't read the series if Chris decides to release the whole thing as a box!
I would recommend reading them in order if possible.

I received a copy of this book at no charge, and I'm leaving an honest review.

Herding cats is hard, even if you are a cat.
"And a cat’s agenda involves a good meal and warm place to groom and sleep"
And in Ben's case:
"I was a cat... the honour of being descendants of the great Asian leopard cat"
How could you expect him to be the hero:
"I’d been asleep through most of her lessons."
And teaching cats is not easy:
"It takes time for these things to soak in, and the feline brain admittedly hasn’t been designed for such stuff."
But the crystals had a plan.
"it’s the crystals’. Everything we’ve done so far has been in their service."
In the end throw all the magic creatures against the demons, evil warlocks and the evil entity; Cana Dei
It's non-stop action once the end comes. Image Ragnarök but with these magic creatures, crystals and magic staffs. That's what this book will bring you.

(I received this copy for the ARC group, so I got to read it early. Eat your hearts out.)

Cats being cats, the hundred-strong clowder Ben is training to fight Cana Dei would rather eat and sleep than work. They are sent to the Ghost Realm, and Salanraja follows Ben through the one-way portal, because he does not want to be left behind Ben's "adventures" (again!).

How can Ben, Max, Salanraja, and Ben's clowder of cats-in-training-to-be-mages escape from the Ghost Realm, complete their training, and defeat Cana Dei this time? Well, I'll just say, this is Ben's life. Leading is what he does well. Reluctantly, but well.

The tension builds in this story of the Bengal cat Ben. It seems many times that he and all the dragon-riding magic-wielding cats will surely perish. Ben must learn to be a leader, not just a follower. And he does so with the help of Bastet. Still, he must find that strength and confidence within. He does, but it is quite the journey. Maybe there will be mutton sausages for all or a bowl of smoked salmon perhaps, at the end (the new beginning?). An enjoyable read, as are all in the series. I heartily recommend this book if you like cats.

This was a great book. I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started this book, but it was non-stop action with witty banter that will have you rolling on the floor, clutching your sides and wondering just how hilarious a talking cat can be...

What a wonderful ending to the series.

The characters are wonderful and quirky. The plot is twisty and intense. The world building is superb. I hope the author will write more books in this universe.
