Stranded, injured, and freezing, what happens to the survivors next will haunt them forever.
After breaking up a sex trafficking ring, FBI Agent Victoria Heslin wants nothing more than to visit the rescue shelter she sponsors, a trip that also offers a much-needed European vacation and a chance to figure out her new relationship with Ned. Comfortable in first class, she drifts off—only to be shocked awake when her plane crashes.
Lost in an empty, frozen wasteland, Victoria and a few other survivors battle extreme temperatures, as each day brings more tragedy. One by one, the desperate group is winnowed down. The remaining passengers must decide if they'll stay with the wreck, waiting to be found, or brave the harsh elements and venture out in search of help.
When Agent Dante Rivera learns of Victoria's fate, he puts all his energy and expertise into finding her plane, which seems to have vanished from existence. As he unravels a technological mystery and layers of scheming, he fears his worst nightmare will be realized: that he won't find his coworker and friend alive.

Reads like a movie, but suspension of disbelief required to make it through. Whilst the characters were mostly two dimensional, Ashby was a sweetheart and by far my favourite!
A commercial airliner disappears without a trace, crashing in an empty, frozen wasteland.
The plane has split apart on impact and more than 100 people have died. Victoria and a few other survivors battle extreme temperatures, but each day brings more tragedy. With some serious injuries and dangerous conditions, the stranded small group is thinning down. The remaining passengers must decide if they'll stay with the wreck even though it's been 5 days and they haven't been found, or brave the harsh elements and venture out in search of help.
Stranded, seriously injured, freezing, and some critically ill, what happens to the survivors next will haunt them forever.
Listened to the Audio book version. It was a tougher listen for me as some of the characters were portrayed in annoyingly loud and/or nasal tones.
Nail-biting! I'm surprised I have any nails left after finishing "When They Find Us" by Jenifer Ruff. This is the third book in the series with a fourth to come. I believe they can be read as stand alone because I have not read the first two yet and didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. You can mark my words that I am going to find the time in my schedule to read them.
This is a great story of survival after a plane crash in Greenland during the winter. There are seven survivors. One of them is an FBI agent so, you know they pull out all the stops to investigate their whereabouts and what happened to the plane. There were a few characters I was rooting for and a couple I didn't care for. That's normal. I think there is always one character I don't like. Maybe that's just me.
I read one other book by Jenifer and that was a winner too. I'm not usually into espionage and FBI but, she really knows how to pull off a good story and I haven't minded. In fact, you can tell I loved both of her books. If you haven't read her books yet and are looking for a new series or author, I highly recommend Jenifer's books.
I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. I'm glad I did! Thank you, Jenifer.
This is a thrilling read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Entertaining! Jenifer Ruff has written another action packed, suspenseful book!
I'm telling you, when you have a chance to read Ruff's books, you don't want to pass it up.
This was the 3rd book in her Agent Victoria Heslin series, it can be read as a stand alone, but I think you should definitely read the others.
When They Find Us, was entertaining on all aspects, there was tragedy, the need for survival, life and death situations, intense twists and turns. I literally found myself getting chills from this one! Ruff really out did herself, and it has to be one of my favorites from the series.
If your looking for a book that is realistic, intense, and that will keep you feeling anxious with what the outcome will be, than this is definitely the book for you!
I was given a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review.
From beginning to end, a movie played in my mind. It was sensational! I was so worried Ashby was going to die right before the rescue. This should not be a low budget movie but a grand one. I wish I had a contact at a studio. Best book I've read in awhile.
This was my least favorite in the series, but it’s still overall a very enjoyable read! It was just a little less realistic than the others and the resolution was a little bit disappointing in terms of detail. There was more of a survival focus than a crime focus, and I think that the crime got the short end of the stick in this case. But I applaud the author for doing something slightly different with the format. I by no means want to discourage anyone from reading this book! :)
Brilliant thriller! I found this book so hard to put down. Jenifer Ruff never seems to disappoint. She knows how to write a good, suspenseful thriller.
This is the third book in the Agent Victoria Heslin Thriller Series but be assured that it can absolutely be thoroughly enjoyed as a standalone without imparting any sense of having missed out on vital background. In this frighteningly plausible storyline, we follow FBI Agent Victoria Heslin and her potential romantic partner and friend, Ned Patterson (a veterinarian) as they embark on a trip to Spain to volunteer at an animal rescue which Victoria sponsors. Unfortunately for them, the flight does not go as planned. The plane crashes under mysterious circumstances in a location so far removed from the approved flight path that finding the downed plane using established search and rescue protocols soon proves to be an exercise in futility. As the investigation into the disappearance of Skyline Flight 745 unfolds, it becomes apparent that this is not a routine hijacking or act of terrorism.
Leading the FBI’s efforts in this multi-agency investigation is Agent Dante Rivera, a colleague and personal friend of Victoria’s who harbors some intense but, as yet, unspoken personal feelings for her. His struggle to remain professional in spite of his escalating internal turmoil as he relentlessly pursues each lead in the case is so well portrayed that his anxiety and tension are palpable.
The horrific circumstances Victoria, Ned, and the other crash survivors find themselves in is carefully depicted in detail but, thankfully, without the excessive gruesomeness favored by some writers. The exquisitely vivid description of the excruciating cold endured by the survivors as they await rescue is enough to chill your bones as you read. Can they survive long enough to be rescued? Will the mystery of what crashed Flight 745 be solved? You’ll have to pick up the book and start reading to find out. If you enjoy a taught thriller featuring a diverse array of interesting characters and a timely and plausible premise, this book will surely enthrall you from start to finish. It offers the visceral impact of a Dan Brown novel and a meticulously crafted plot replete with unrelenting chills, thrills, and suspense. Please insure that your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright and locked positions because this is one epic adventure!
I was provided with an advance copy of this book by the author and I am voluntarily offering my honest and unbiased review.
Starts out great, middle is great, ending fizzles out. And because of spoilers I can't say why it fizzles out but I can tell you was I was left unsatisfied. The bulk of the novel is how the characters deal with being stuck in an area where there is just snow as far as the eye can see. No distant smoke trails from towns or villages, nothing but white. And wind. The wind is the killer. And they also have to deal with each other's personalities and the clashes that ensue. Speaking of personalities, at least one of the characters seemed two dimensional to me, and like a Hollywood stand-in for X typical role. Now that I think of it there was more than one character that seemed two dimensional or wooden to me. Their actions, now that I look back, seemed to be useful for the plot rather than what a real person would choose to do. Same thing with some of the things they said and their overall character, it just seemed too perfect for the plot rather than a real person.
But it's not the worst book I've read so I gave it 3 stars. I don't think I'll be reading any more from this author unless I run out of other stuff to read, which I don't foresee.
I haven't read any other books in this series, but this was a Kindle Daily Deal and I'm a sucker for a plane crash survival story. I didn't feel like I was missing too much information by not reading the previous books.
Victoria is an FBI agent who's also an heiress that lives in a mansion (eye roll). She comes across as very judgmental and I didn't like her much. She traveling with Ned, one of two men who seem to be in love with her (another eye roll). She wasn't all that nice to Ned and I though he could do better. Ned's really the reason that they survived, he was always doing the most. There's also a teenage boy, Ashby, that survived and I found him delightful!
Whenever the story stayed focused on the plane crash, it kept my attention. When it veered off into the FBI investigation (which was more than I expected) I found it dry and became bored. The reasoning behind the crash was weak. The end seemed to rush up a bit fast, and I wish there had been more wrap up with Ned instead of Victoria.
From the first Victoria Heslin book I have loved her character. In this book her character shows strengths and weaknesses and really develops into a more rounded character. Although there are weaknesses she shows strengths that are beyond what many people possess. It also continues her relationship with Ned her dog caretaker and lover which at times is on shaky ground. The characters are well developed and different enough to be interesting and the plot and location are certainly unusual and extremely challenging.
All in all once I got past the first chapter I had a hard time putting this book down and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait for the next one in the series.
I received an ARC copy of the book from the publisher and this is my honest review of this book.
3.5 stars This book definitely reads like an action movie. It is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand alone(which I did). FBI agent Victoria finds herself on a plane that has crashed in the middle of nowhere. Her and a handful of other survivors must figure out a way to survive until help arrives, of it does.
I have never read any of the Victoria Heslin novels prior to this one, but I don't think that was a problem with reading this one. This is a pretty standalone novel that is more of a survival tale than any mystery or political suspense. Not that its a bad thing, but I am guessing most of the other books in the series are more in the Dan Brown/Tom Clancy family than this one. Without giving much away, its about a plane crash. Thats it. I felt it was a little bit like the Poseidon Adventure which is fine by me.
If the book had any "downside", I thought the mystery component of the book was a bit too clean and simple. Also, there were quite a few characters that could have really been more fleshed out and we could have had a much more intriguing story. Let me just say that many of the survivors seemed to be hiding alot, but nothing ever came from it.
Not sure if a book about a plane crash is really much of a beach read (let alone reading this thing on a plane ride), but the story is breezy and well written. I liked it. It did the trick!
This is a wonderful third book in a series – the other two are even better, as far as the mystery goes, but the survivalist part of this one is amazing. Also you’ll be cold reading it and it’s a 2 am - finish the book before I go to bed kind of book.
I would give it a 4.5! I really enjoy this author’s books and writing style. Just really captures me and brings me into the books. I can’t wait to read some more books from this author!
A well written thriller but simply not as plausible as previous entries in this series. There are a few loose ends which are never really wrapped up either, and the suspension of disbelief is more akin to a science fiction story than a crime thriller. Good for a light read.
Excellent book. Will definitely look into more from this author. A new go to author for me. Awesome, fast paced read, I couldn't put it down. This book was a great ride that I didn’t want to get off. I fell in love with the characters and the story kept me hooked to the end!
I liked this book. Since its number 3 in a series (and no, I hadn’t read the previous two) the start went nice and fast giving us a short background on the main character. I liked that. The rest of the book was taken up with the airplane crash and the survivors trying to survive and the families and FBI trying to find them. The ending felt sort of rushed. It happened in more of discussion on what happened instead of it actually happening. It also felt like there was a lot of things left unsaid.
