Every fantasy story needs some elves, I find it adorable that he saved an Elvish Princess.

Copy and paste of volume 2:

Overall I think the art is doing a good job of reminding us that he is still only 4 years old although at times I feel like they (him and the elf girl) do come off more like elementary school kids so notices sure why they didn’t give him a few more years at home learning concepts and then having an 7-8 year old to venture with his parents to get a mentor as it would have maybe more sense for the elf girl to have the conversation they have at that age as I don’t know if a “normal” 5 year old would have talked with him this way. This is a common issue I have when I read stories with children now that I am a parent, when I was younger and childless I find the give or take of 3-4 years of child development wasn’t noticeable and seemed fine. Now it’s always me going “a 5 year old would do that” or a “10 year would have grown out of that”

Copy and paste below from volume 1 as it still is relevant

So I started this series online as I don’t have patience to wait for the weekly episode update of the anime now that it’s streaming for the spring season.

It reminds me of the Japanese isekai anime/light novel series Mushoko Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation where the reincarnation happens at birth and they basically are born with the consciousness of the past life not just memories of the past or getting the memories in life like at puberty or when they turn into an adult. Not like transmigration “reincarnation” isekais where they take over the body of someone that’s died and they may or may not have the memories of the previous person.

One of the main differences, for the better in my opinion, is that the MC isn’t a pervert. In Mushoko Tensei he was a 30 something incel basically so notices his mom’s breasts when he’s a baby and obsesses later for an entire arc over not being able to get it up after losing his virginity at around 14 and then being left like a one night stand.

I really appreciate that the MC, Arthur, in this series is NOT obsessed with sex or a pervert. Rather then reincarnating from modern day korea he was a King in another world and while seems to have been a cold tyrant as he rose to power he’s quite rational and calm in his new life, and him learning what it means to have family ties and to care about people we see a lot of emotional growth.

We get funny comedic breaks as he struggles with adjusting to a baby body and his lack of control over it. Like being embarrassed that he soils his diaper. Over all I really enjoy this arc as he learns the magic structure of this world and apply his knowledge and skills from his past life to adapt to this world.

So, I was looking something up for my shelves that I could easily just copy from a prior review (which is only book 2, apparently, since book 1 was longer ago than I thought and prior to joining Goodreads), and I saw that there will be an anime, so I guess that'll make it easier to catch up, haha.

It's not... THAT hard to catch up, I think? Certainly compared to other series, anyway. I mean, I noted that it's an isekai, but only sort of; the main character's in the same universe as far as I remember, but beyond that I don't remember how many years passed between lives. Heck, I had forgotten that in his current life, he (Art) is only FIVE at the time he got separated from his family and was presumed dead—I was wondering how old he was when there's a "Three years later" note and he mentions that he's *eight.*

I mean, he's a particularly cute five-year-old for a bit:

still frame of Art smiling wistfully at Tessia (off-panel)

Overall, I think I need to read the series at once to appreciate it more, but it's definitely lovely. That's probably what caught my eye, that it's a similar level of quality to The World After the Fall or Solo Leveling without being an entire team working on it.

*checks credits*

OH REDICE IS INVOLVED NEVERMIND I BET IT IS A TEAM

...I mean, I might feel better if it IS a team, so the artist doesn't die from overwork—though even it being a team doesn't guarantee that, it's better than if there's only one artist.

*doublechecks*

...looks like one artist after all. :( I don't blame 'em at all, though. These specific web comics feel great for the reader, terrible for the artists. So conflicted.

...story! The story is good. B+ material! Yes, it's a bit stock as far as isekai/pseudo-isekai goes, with the overpowered "genius" boy (who just happens to remember his past life) and finding a girl who latches onto him as a saviour and they totally will grow up together and have babies, assuming they survive the coming Plot thrown at them.

Not complaining, just noting that it's the same old, even IF it's pretty good. I mean, at least he's not a raging pervert (though Tessia DOES seem to be oddly fond of the term despite not understanding what it means). Definitely want to catch up if I can find more of the series (including book 1, to give it a proper review).

Anime update:
So, unless something happened in a few flashback-y panels that I'd completely forgotten, the anime has inserted a lot of White Room-esque memories Arthur has, about how he was treated coldly and grew into a cold king before his death (/murder?), so he's confused at how his new family treats him so warmly. I wish I had read the first books (again) more recently so I could more accurately compare, but that feels... weird? Like, I only remembered Art acting in the "usual" way about having been reincarnated with most or all of his prior adult memories.

Otherwise, I *guess* it's a pretty close adaptation? I mostly remember the bits from Sylvia's cave (and even that, not very well). The problem is the story on the whole is fairly forgettable, too "stock" isekai to stand out. Even with the anime.

...

On second thought, when I thought to look something up, I instead found a comment that (if ACTUALLY from the author) about how apparently the anime is... lacking. Not really a surprise. Well, at least some of the visuals appear to be pretty close. My opinion might change after the next few books and how the anime covers those.

Also really confused by the anime translation of the title: "What Will the Mighty King Do in His Second Life?" That's a... VERY different title.

Art only wanted to return the little elven girl he saved back to her family before returning home---but returning home is a larger problem than he thought. Because the final gift Sylvie left with him is something that could destroy him if he doesn't learn to master it first.

This is the first volume where Art starts moving out of his early childhood. It's so much fun to see his character design evolve as he gets older. Tess, too, goes from very childish to more mature, and as always I appreciate the art for consistently being fantastic.

Story-wise, it's also where the plot starts really digging into some of the unique facets of this world. The various races, the strained relationships between elves and humanity, more details on the magic system, and most importantly for Art, the particular type of power Sylvie gifted to him, are all explored.

Overall it's a lot of fun to see the series really taking off. I rate this book Highly Recommended.

This is a summary--Arthur has rescued an elf girl from slave traders. Arthur accompanies the elf girl to her kingdom. He finds out she is a princess. Her kingdom hates humans. They make an exception for Arthur. The former king agrees to train Arthur to master the dragon within him. Arthur becomes close friends with the princess. Upon a mana transfer by the former elf king, Arthur finds a dragon egg from Sylvia and it hatches and proclaims Arthur to be its parent. Arthur is 8 now, although he looks 13. It's time for him to reunite with his parents through a rare opened portal that goes to the human world. Arthur will miss the elf princess and his mentor. He arrives in a floating city with some noble elves children. The art by Fuyuki 23 is amazing.

Arthur has just rescued a young elf girl from slavers and somewhat reluctantly agrees to escort her home, despite only being 5 years old and missing his own parents. Turns out that this girl was actually the elven princess and her grandfather (the former king) takes a liking to Arthur and decides to train him.

I'm leaving out some of the details, but basically this book is Arthur's 3-year stay with the elves, shortened by a time skip, of course. So Arthur now has a dragon as an adopted grandma, an elf king as an adopted grandpa, and is the most overpowered 8-year-old this world has ever seen.

It'd been a while since I'd read book 2, but this was easy to jump back into. The story flowed well and was a lot of fun. After the seriousness of the last book, this one was more lighthearted and fun and Sylvie is adorable. Looking forward to book 4!

Arthur a tellement grandi et appris en 3 ans, c'est hallucinant ! Et puis Sylvie omg, quelle mignonnerie 🖤 J'espère qu'elle ne va pas se faire enlever au vu des mecs cachés dans l'ombre...

I love everything about this series. The way Art and his parents both got so emotional when he finally got to speak to them was everything. He is so loved in that family. Can't wait to see them together again

Extrait :
