"What stands out to me the most in this fantasy fiction or magical realism novel is that the protagonist is a very ordinary man!"

I just finished reading The Gravedigger of Qadim by Rohit Ramachandran. The story is set in the fictional village named Qadim where the villagers fear the forest beyond the creek and more than that, the graveyard at night. I felt these people are so innocent and they help each other live their life peacefully.
The protagonist, Khalid, is a gravedigger now, he wasn’t one before his wife Zainab’s tragic death during childbirth. Seeking a purpose or wishing to be closer to his wife’s grave, he chose this path. One day, while digging a grave, he finds a talisman, and from there, the story takes unpredictable turns. The talisman unleashes evil powers that threaten to destroy Qadim and its people. Can the village be saved? How does Khalid, an ordinary man, fit into this story as the protagonist?

This novel excels in its literary language. Rohit's detailed narration, even of the simplest things, vividly unfolds the story before us. We can feel the emotions and the lives of people in that old era. What I find particularly interesting is how successfully he sets the tone of the book, reminiscent of the greatest Middle Eastern novels.

Though it contains elements of fantasy fiction, the best term to describe this novel would be magical realism. Don’t miss it if you love a blend of fantasy and reality.

"The Grave-digger of Qadim" by Rohit Ramachandran is a richly woven tapestry of mythology, history, and human emotion. Set in the mystical city of Qadim, the narrative follows the life of a humble grave-digger who becomes an unlikely hero amidst a backdrop of supernatural occurrences and age-old conflicts.

Rohit’s prose is both poetic and evocative, capturing the essence of Qadim with vivid descriptions that transport the reader to an age far from present. The characters are deeply human, and at times even superhuman, however, Rohit makes them relatable and compelling. The protagonist’s journey is a poignant exploration of duty, sacrifice, and the quest for redemption.

The plot is intricately constructed, with twists and turns that keep the reader engaged. Rohit skillfully balances the mystical elements with grounded human experiences, creating a story that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. Themes of legacy, memory, and the cyclical nature of good and evil are interwoven throughout, adding depth to the narrative.

"Grave-digger of Qadim" is a remarkable debut showcasing Rohit Ramachandran’s storytelling talent. It is a must-read for fantasy and literary fiction fans, offering a unique blend of magic and reality that lingers long after the final page is turned.

A very satisfying read

The Gravedigger of Qadim is a well-paced book that kept me engaged from the very beginning. There wasn't a single dull moment in the narrative that I wanted to skip. The author successfully immersed me in the world he created. There's not an ounce of flab in the brisk yet sumptuous narrative. I'm delighted to see such high-quality work from an Indian author. I hope this book receives the international attention it deserves. Overall, it's a highly satisfying read that I'm sure to revisit in the future.
