This is an advanced grammar reference. It combines explanations of English grammar with information on how, when and why we use different structures. It shows the differences between spoken and written grammar and includes frequency information of the most common forms.
As an EAP teacher I fully recommend Douglas Biber et al's magnificent work 'The Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English'. Yet to see the Student's version.
Longman Student Grammar is a well-constructed and example-rich descriptive grammar, which I used during my English MA studies as required reading and continue using to this day—I check it whenever my EFL brain gets stuck trying to figure out some grammatical structure or other. Grammars are not traditionally thought of as entertaining, but through Longman's varied and corpus-based examples the grammar reads fairly effortlessly.
...See I read it as a joke at first... But it's maybe one of the best grammar books I've ever had to read, because it explains stuff and, how shocking, HAS AN OPEN VIEW OF GRAMMAR :0
No seriously only finding this at the end of my English Studies for my Major, it's depressing to know how many tears I could have sparred myself had I read this book. But hey, as a teacher in the making, this is surely what I will be recomending to my students.
Some simple explanations but some still quite complex explanations about English Grammar. We used various parts in class so I didn't read it cover to cover.
Listen.... I read this for my grammar course at uni and I have never felt more stupid than when reading this book. It is well written tho. I'm just too stupid to understand it :')
English Translation Studies The feeling of wanting to tear my hair off was all due to my attitude towards grammar, it wasn't this poor book's fault. So because this was a compulsory read for university, the rating was given with as much objectivity as possible. I may faint in the exam, but at least Longman offered me the chance to read about grammar in a well organized format with clear sections, tables and examples. And, you know, the real one is about 1500 pages long, which makes me a little happier.
I took up a linguistics class about 2 years ago. It was very interesting but, given the fact that it was an advanced course, I sometimes struggled to keep up. This book really helped me get through it. I'm definitely keeping this one because I'm certain it'll help me even more in the future.
