This is the story of how 2013 Superintendent of the Year, Mark Edwards, led the Mooresville, N.C. Graded School District in its goal of creating a vibrant new learning environment for teachers and students and achieving outstanding academic results through an innovative digital conversion initiative that provided every student and teacher with a laptop, despite a very modest resource base. Every Child, Every Day gives readers a look at the visionary success factors that worked together to produce positive results–a culture of caring, digital resources, a relentless focus on data, leadership at all levels, and student-centered learning–and shows how their interplay drove, and can drive, academic improvement in virtually any school district. New funding strategies that address the budget issue combine with step-by-step replication tips to provide valuable inspiration and guidelines to help every school succeed on the digital conversion path to student achievement.
I think this is a must-read for any school district considering a digital conversion (which is implementing a 1:1 technology initiative). The thing I liked best about Edwards' book and his discussions about making 1:1 happen is that the focus isn't on the technology and its uses, but on relationship building among teachers, administrators, students, non-certified staff, parents, and the community. Handing a child a piece of technology to use in the classroom really isn't any more than Santa might do on a Christmas morning, but building the community of learners and innovators, and creating the culture of caring as featured in Every Child, Every Day takes a lot of work and planning. If your school is already in a 1:1 environment, this is an excellent litmus test for your program as well. An eye-opening, easy to read book about a topic often fraught with high emotion and confusion.
This is a useful book for leadership teams in those districts looking for 1 on 1 conversion; however, much of the text is repetitive. I did like that emphasis was placed on building relationships and climate, communication with all stakeholders, and continuous professional development.
Interesting book that skims the surface explaining how and why digital conversion is important. The emphasis being communication, culture and community involvement.
