From No. 1 bestselling author Beth Moran comes a story about family, friendship and community. As Faith tries on her future mother-in-law’s wedding dress in preparation for her own wedding, her tears are not of joy. The hideous frock is nicknamed ‘The Ghost Web’ by Faith’s best friend Marilyn, who can’t understand why Faith would even consider wearing it. But there’s a lot Marilyn doesn’t know about Faith – not the least of which is that Faith is just the latest of the names she has called herself.

Faith and her brother Sam survived a traumatic childhood which included having to change their names to hide from the past, but surviving has left scars. Faith’s generous fiancé Perry doesn’t just promise to be a partner, he offers freedom and security, and enough kindness to keep Faith squashing down any doubts on what ‘being in love’ really means.

It’s not until she meets an extraordinary group of women at the Grace Chapel choir, that things start to become crystal clear. As choir-leader extraordinaire, the indomitable Hester, holds a mirror up to her ragtag group of singers, all with their own burdens and insecurities, and teaches them to see how magnificent they are, so Faith can dare to dream of a future where she and Sam can stop running and she might even be ready to accept the love that she deserves.

Number 1 bestselling author Beth Moran is back with her trademark ingredients of wisdom and warmth, heartbreak and hearts soaring. Perfect for fans of Jill Mansell, Philippa Ashley and Jenny Colgan.

The Storygraph and The Book Review Crew Blog

I have loved many other books by this author ‎ Because You Loved Me and Let It Snow immediately come to mind. But Lean on Me didn't have the same magic as Beth Moran's other books. Maybe my expectations were too high?

I think the biggest problem I had was the main character, Faith. I didn't like her at all. She was using Perry for his money and even though she was doing it for her brother and not herself I just couldn't stand her for that reason. Faith didn't tell Perry her secret but she told a near stranger, Dylan, almost right away. I think she liked to use her brother, Sam as an excuse for not getting her shit together and there is proof of that with the way she treated April. She was also pretty weak for someone who lived through what she did, she didn't stand up for herself to her future mother-in-law, Larissa, I would have told her what's what. I also didn't buy into the whole let's wait until marriage spiel she gave Perry. It's not like she's some holy virgin that's all pure and innocent so I can't imagine a guy in his 30s waiting like that, marriage of convenience or not. I also didn't like Faith and the minister flirting while she is engaged to someone else and he's the one who will be performing the wedding ceremony.

So let's get to the good parts. I loved all the diverse side characters from the choir. The sense of women coming together and making each other stronger and having more self-esteem really resonated with me. I loved the feeling of community the women had. Heaster is a force to be reckoned with and she stole my heart with her take-charge attitude and making these women love themselves and each other. Marilyn is the type of friend every woman wishes and deserves to have.

This story was equal parts sad and heartwarming and filled with hope but Lean on Me failed to deliver a likable main character and I almost DNF it. I was not invested in Faith and I did not care what happened to her, Perry deserved much better.

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Beth Moran consistently writes solid, engaging books that effectively combine a solemn tone of tragedy with the soft joy that comes with new relationships. This one was very much written in her usual style, and I flew through it as I do all her other stories.

The main character’s past was heartbreaking, and the friendships that she gained through the choir group were even more impactful than her romantic interests.

However, I struggled to find the usual allure in this book - Faith’s relationship with her fiancé Perry, and her friendship & budding attraction to Dylan, were very flimsy and I didn’t fully buy into the romantic aspect of the story. It also felt like there was a lot going on at all times; if the author intends for there to be multiple branches off the storyline, it needs to be done in an organised way, and this one felt a bit chaotic.

Nevertheless, I will always be on the lookout for new releases by this author! 🥰

Well I’m rather tired this morning as I have been awake almost all night reading this amazing, literally unputdownable book!!!!!! I only planned to read a chapter before bed however, I became so invested in the characters that I couldn’t put it down!! I would love to find a congregation, choir and pastor such as the ones in Grace Chapel! I haven’t been to church in many years, and I don’t think I can sing but I loved the bond they had and it made me feel a bit lonely when I finished the book, I felt like I had suddenly made a whole new group of friends and then lost them.

Hester was a real force of nature and Marilyn was the best friend any woman could wish for. My heart broke for Faith and her brother Sam dealing with the physical and mental scars left from their childhood. The future in-laws - the Upperton’s were just awful, especially Larissa.
I know that were only a few days into January, but this has to be my best read so far this year and it’ll take a lot to top this one.
I only discovered this author late last year and this is the third book of hers I have read; the rest are on the way to my TBR list this morning.
A five star recommendation is not enough - you have to read this book 📚

In Beth Moran's latest page-turner, Lean On Me, readers are swept into a poignant tapestry of trauma, romance, and the rejuvenating power of community. This book took me forever to read; I just couldn’t get into it. Sure, there were a few enjoyable moments, but they were few and far between. Faith’s traumatic past was undeniably heartbreaking, but even after all she’d been through, I wasn’t exactly cheering for her happy ending.

And the romance with Dylan. I felt about as much connection between them as I do with my dentist. Poor Perry, though. He was ready to give her the world, and she couldn’t even throw him a thank-you or show any appreciation. I started rooting for him to find a happy ending without her.

The saving grace? The side characters. Marilyn was an absolute gem, and Polly’s story was heartbreaking. But outside of a few gut-wrenching flashbacks and some real-talk moments between friends, I was left mostly… well, bored. I guess every book can’t be a page-turner, but this one really tested my endurance!

Beth Moran - Lean On Me.

#LeanOnMe is an outstanding book that has so much to offer.

There are a lot of characters to get to grips with, but they all find their place quite quickly.
Faith is the main character and she has been through hell in her life. You’d need a heart of stone to not feel for Faith.
There were times where I wanted to shake her, but I did grow to like her.
The other characters were many, but oh so brilliant. They all brought something special to the story.

When Faith’s past threatened to catch up with her, I felt a genuine knot in my stomach. The tension felt so real.

I honestly couldn’t put this book down. I was so invested in the story.

#LeanOnMe is an incredibly emotional read. I laughed, I cried real tears, and felt genuine anxiety at what was potentially going to happen.

Beautifully written, with many twists and turns and every emotion under the sun is captured.

I was quite honestly blown away by this book. I loved it!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Lean On Me' by Beth Moran.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Beth Moran, Rachel's Random Resources, Book And Tonic, Boldwood Books and The Bold Book Club

Publication date 4th March 2024.

This may be the first book I have read by this author but it most certainly will not be my last!!

This novel consists of 24 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

'Lean On Me' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Beth discusses domestic violence, murder, death and addiction.

An absolute stunner from the extremely talented Beth!!! Well done Beth on an absolutely beautiful, emotive and perfect read!! An absolute stunner that I fell in love with from the beginning to the end!!!

I'm not crying, you are 😭!!! OMG Beth what on Earth have you done to me? Considering I'm a hard nosed cow who only crys in books when an animal dies you have managed to put me in tears, don't worry not all sad, but still!! No animals involved yet I'm blubbering like a baby!!! Does not look good for my image!!! Apart from that, where on Earth have you been all my life and why am I only now reading one of your books considering just from reading this I can tell your one heck of an amazing author!!! Anyway I am desperate to get stuck into more of your books and have already added them all to my wishlist so I best get on with my actual review hadn't I!!!

As you can possibly tell, I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this absolutely stunning book!!!! It has absolutely everything and anything you could ever ask for in a page turner from a sweet and sexy minister, a billionaire fiancé, a wedding dress nicknamed Ghost Web, a choir master nicknamed Helmet, a disaster fun filled camping trip, an amazing yet bizarre friendship group laughter, tears, hope, love, woman power and so, so much more!!!! Beth's stunning evocative and emotive writing skills will have you laughing until you cry, heartbroken until you cry, filled with joy until you cry, well she'll make you cry so make sure you have the tissues at the ready!!! She will also put you straight into the middle of the storyline filling you with anger towards a certain character, tasting beautiful Michelin star food, hearing a gorgeous choir and having your hearts racing!!! In this absolutely stunning storyline we meet Faith who has gone through hell in her life and is still struggling with her past, her brother who is a struggling addict and with trusting anyone. Along comes rich Perry who proposes to her which seems to be the only way to save her brother. However, along with Perry comes his overbearing, downright rude and stuck up mother who is an absolute control freak. When out pretending she can chose the wedding of her dreams she goes to her Mum's church Grave Chapel. Here she meets a unique group of women and their handsome minister who will change Beth's life. Will she have the wedding of her dreams? Who is Beth and Sam scared of? How can a group of women who are completely different from each other make a difference? Well, if I told you I would be spoiling your fun wouldn't I?? Grab your copy of this absolute stunning emotional and poignant read for yourself to find out. This truly is a unique, remarkable, unforgettable and beautiful story of how friendship can change your life, what you would do to protect those you love and much more. Through the pages of this book there are dark times and Beth covers difficult subjects such as drug and alcohol addiction, abuse, mental health, bullying and murder but she weaves these difficult and heartbreaking topics into an absolutely stunning storyline that has a huge impact. Her absolutely stunning evocative writing skills ensures the readers are absolutely sucked into the stunning storyline with the atmosphere, emotions and characters coming to life all around them. It was an absolutely compelling, addictive heart lifting and heart breaking emotional read that kept me turning the pages until late at night. I absolutely devoured it in one sitting and then was gutted I had finished it so quickly but there was no way I could put it down!! The characters and locations came to life around me and I cannot wait to read more books by this absolutely amazing and extremely talented author.

Do not turn a single page of this book until you have cleared your schedules and have your tissues ready as you will not be able to put this stunning emotional page turner down!!!

I very quickly became completely invested in the characters, along with the storyline, who were all absolutely fantastic with their own individual personalities and quirks. They all started feeling like friends so quickly and I was devastated to say Goodbye to them. I normally write about the same amount about the characters as I do about the storyline but after realising how much I have already written and the fact that I could talk about this stunning book all day I'm going to try to keep this bit short. The fact that Beth truly cares about her character absolutely shines through the pages. They are realistic, extremely well developed, the majority of them are likeable, lovable and relatable (there are a few rotten apples I couldn't stand but I won't waste my time talking about them stuck up swines!!) and they all lept out of the pages. I absolutely LOVED seeing the amazing and beautiful friendships, relationships and bonds grow and develop between all the members of the choir along with those surrounding it. I was rooting for Faith from the moment I met her and my heart was breaking for her and the situation she was in. She is such a strong woman, a fighter and someone whose only downside is the fact that apart from living a long time in my memory (along with many of the other fantastic and unique characters) is that the only other place she lives is on the pages of this gorgeous book. The majority of these amazing characters I am truly devastated to say Goodbye to as I loved so many of their breathe of fresh air, strange, unique and fun personalities and watching them interact and grow together was just lush!!! Each of the characters have rich personalities and they will all well and truly stay with me for a long time. Beth's fantastic evocative writing skills ensure each and every one of them come to life in front of your eyes while you go through all their emotions with them. I wept, laughed, fought and cried alongside each of them as they all went through their own trials and tribulations and I had the biggest smile on my face as I watched many come out stronger the other side and the biggest heartbreak when some didn't. Anyway so much for keeping it short!!! I will wrap up by saying thank you Beth for creating and bringing to life an absolutely fantastic, unique and memorable group of amazing characters that i wont forget anytime soon!!

Congratulations Beth on an absolutely gorgeous success!!! Even though you turned me into an emotional wreck I absolutely LOVED this stunning storyline and cannot wait to get hooked into the rest of your guaranteed to be gorgeous books. Welcome to my favourite author club and here is to your next guaranteed success 🥂!!

Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the first chapter of Beth's 'Take Me Home' which promises to be just as gorgeous as this book and is is one I'm definitely looking forward to reading myself!!

Overall an absolutely stunning, emotive, addictive and beautiful page turner about love, family and friendship which will keep you hooked throughout!!

First, I didn’t know trauma romance was a thing until I read this book and some of the reviews, but now I know. And it makes sense with this book.

A lot of trigger warnings; DV, addiction, mental Illness, childhood trauma, etc. But all of that being said, I loved this book.

The best part of this book is the idea of friendship and finding your people/community. The character development around the supporting cast was superb and you find yourself just as invested with their stories as you are with Faith’s.

I noticed some of the reviews stating Faith is not likable which somewhat baffled me. Yes, she makes mistakes and a couple unethical decisions, but if you have never had to resort to those types of decisions, consider yourself privileged….or blessed….however you want to frame it.

I think most people will read this, routing for Faith, and wanting her to find her peace.

not great

I usually like Beth Moran books but this seemed to be a mish mash of stories from a load of other books. Really did not feel any empathy towards any of the characters and Perry the poor boyfriend deserved more and I really did not like the main character. I finished the book only because it’s rude not to try and give it a chance.

This was called, “The Name I Call Myself,” and they changed it. I had a heck of a time finally making the connection. My sister’s raves about it are well deserved. Lived the choir and church connection, and the struggles of the MC as she tries to manage a rather chaotic life. Well done.

After a particularly traumatic early life, Faith’s marriage to Perry might finally give her the safety and security she needs, and the means to provide her troubled brother Sam with stability and support. She’ll be marrying into a family with money and privilege way outside her experience, and she’s beginning to learn that the wedding plans are something she’s going to struggle to influence when faced with her future mother-in-law’s involvement and control – and that’s why we find her, accompanied by closest friend Marilyn, shopping in Nottingham Lace Market for the wedding dress she’d really like to have and searching for a venue that she’d far prefer to use than the Houghton Country Club where she once worked. And that draws her to Grace Chapel, a place that was special to her mother, and the wonderful but unusual choir that ultimately changes her life for the better.

The characterisation in this book is just fantastic – Faith very quickly won my heart and I loved every step of her journey as she drew on others to find personal strength and make her own difficult decisions on where happiness might really be found. Her friendship with Marilyn is something really special, and beautifully drawn – but so are the friendships with the other individuals she finds through Grace Chapel, every one of them with their own often difficult stories. And the choir is led by the magnificent Hester – my goodness, what a superb character – who subjects the women, all special in their different ways, to an increasingly uncomfortable series of experiences that bonds them together and helps them find their true selves.

There are some particularly dark edges to the story, particularly as the full story of Faith’s past slowly emerges with its many surprises – but there’s plenty of laughter amid the tears, and a focus on family, friendship and community with the most perfect emotional touch. The whole story is exceptionally moving, but entirely uplifting and life affirming too – beautifully written, and completely engaging from the very first page to the last. Every book the author writes becomes my new favourite, but this one was particularly special – a story that made me feel deeply for the individuals at its heart, and totally unforgettable. One I’d urge everyone to read – I promise you’ll love it as much as I did.

Format: eBook

Pretty cute, very chick-flicky, but with a surprising amount of character depth. I read this as part of a book club I'm in, and I thought it was a fun, quick read! There were a couple of the characters I really enjoyed, and Moran did a great job at creating antagonists that were easy to dislike.

There were only a couple things I didn't particularly enjoy about the plot; the first being there were a handful of scenes that felt straight out of a rom-com movie, so they felt a bit cliche and overdone. The second was that because of the large cast of supporting characters, I never felt like I got the whole story on any one of them. For example, the main character joins a women's choir full of interesting and unique women; however, we only get hints at each of their lives and backgrounds because there simply isn't time to dive into them all. I felt myself constantly wanting more of their stories, while simultaneously struggling to keep track of who was who.

The thing I liked best about the story was that it discussed difficult issues, like addiction and mental health. There was plenty of humor and friendship to keep the story from getting too dark, but the author doesn't shy away from the idea that a person can overcome hard things to move on to something greater.

Because of some of the descriptions of trauma, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for younger teenagers. However, there's virtually no spice and very limited language, making it a relatively clean read for YA and adults.

WHAT A PAINFUL BOOK TO GO THROUGH.

The author was trying to fit in all at once without any rhyme or reason. There were so many underlying themes in this book- family trauma, anxiety, drug abuse, sexual assualt, found family, female friendships, romance and the list can just go on.

I wish the author focused on just a few themes and did justice to them, there was way too much going on and reading this book felt like a chore. The main character had serious communication issues and made terrible choices throughout the story.

The story is extremely underdeveloped and disjointed. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone in good faith.

You better have the tissues handy when reading this book. Faith had a hard childhood which we know left her with physical scars and emotional scars. She deeply loves her brother, Sam, and will do anything to take care of him. I loved how the author slowly revealed Faith and Sam’s past as you know horrible things happened but you don’t know what. I can’t imagine what Faith went through in her past and present. This is a story about Faith finding herself and learning to love others and let them move her. This amazing book will pull on your emotions in the best way.

A bittersweet story about friendship and love

The lead character has a traumatic past and finds a group of women who over the course of the story become her "chosen" family.

I quite like the theme of companionship in the book - it reiterates the importance of a supportive set of friends through the adventures of an unusual (but extraordinary) church choir.
The romantic aspects however, were weak; almost as if they were written as an afterthought. And the flashbacks felt scattered and disconnected.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading this and would definitely explore more by the author.

I almost dnf'd this book a bunch of times but I have such a hard time doing that. I think I read romance for the escapism and fluffiness and when they deal with hard stuff like homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, spousal abuse etc.... I am like noooo.... please just give me the fluff.... none of this real life trauma stuff.

This is my second Beth Moran book and my favourite so far. Great story which follows the life of Faith and her brother Sam. Faith joins a choir and finds her "sisters" whilst looking out for her brother Sam, who is traumatised by terrible events from his childhood, just as Faith is. A great read with diverse characters and quite a few twists and turns, plus a bit of romance and humour.

Another wonderful Beth Moran book! Faith has some really hard things in her life, but in true Moran style, a community of strong, wonderful women surround her and help to build her up. Add in a delightful love interest, and you have a lovely story.

I couldn’t stand the main character. I think it would have been better if her brother survived and she could realize that she is not the ONLY one who could “save” him. She had a slight realization of that but not enough.

In Lean on Me we meet Faith, a temping waitress who has had a horrific childhood and is desperately trying to make ends meet, as well as support her brother, Sam, who is an addict with severe mental health problems.

Through her job at an exclusive country club Faith met the wealthy and handsome Perry, who has fallen for her and asked her to marry him.

She loves Perry but is unsure whether she is in love with him yet. However the lifestyle and stability he offers is very attractive and could be what she and Sam need.

Perry is lovely and generous but his wider family is very prestigious and controlling, particularly his mother Larissa, who obviously disapprovess of Faith. Her priorities revolve around the family reputation and how they come across in the photos of the  a county magazine.

Feeling a bit excluded wedding plans Faith starts to look at "her" dream venues with friend Marilyn. She falls in  love with a tiny chapel that her late  Mum used to visit in happier times.  They also, inadavertently, gatecrash the local choir practice and end up being coaxed into the session and make some new friends!

This is a lovely heart-warming story exploring family, love, friendship and grief. There are also some hard-hitting issues, including violence and addiction. As always Beth Moran's characters are relatable andd likeable... I almost fancy vicar Dylan a little bit! I hope we find out what happens next for Faith!

2.5. Slow going in the first third of the book but got better towards the end.

Quotes from the book…
Lean on Me by Beth Moran

Page 37- ‘What is it telling you today? Is it overworked, exhausted? Uptight and crunched up? Hurting? Weighed down? Sluggish? Does your body feel loved? Vibrant? Breathe in some love for yourself, ladies. Sigh out that tension. Out, out, ooouuut! Release the troubles and the to-do list. Breathe in strength! Let go of your fear. Blow out all that anxiety and angst. Blow it out! That’s it, keep blowing.’

Page 38 - ‘What is this place?’ I muttered. This place where people saw into my soul and guessed my deepest feelings, and somehow I was still safe to feel them? Melody laughed, a deep, rich melody. ‘This is the house of grace.’

Page 88 - you are in a storm. It is swirling, churning, picking up bits of your precious, fragile life and smashing them about. But you, you strong and courageous women, are in the eye of the storm. You watch it rage around you, but it will not destroy you! Breathe in hope, wise women. Breathe out panic and doom! Blow out all your trembling terror. Breathe in calm. Peace. Resilience. A million women before you have braced this storm. Stand up, shoulders back, head high! You cannot control the storm, choir, but you can stop it controlling you!

Page 105 - ‘Confidence, poise, grace. A woman at peace with herself. Size and wrinkles are irrelevant.

Page 113 - We called out the answers: confidence, to feel good about ourselves, to relax, great friends, honesty, to feel proud, to know we’re loved, to know we are accepted. We needed each other.

Page 113 - Why does it take a crisis, or a tragedy, or a birthday–or someone to die–before we can spell out what it is that makes them unique, and marvellous? What are you so afraid of?’

Page 207 - It is time you ladies learned how to distinguish between what you need to keep hold of, what other peopleneed to take off you, and what nobody needs. Too many of you have cluttered up your life with junk. Go and master the art of prioritising. Go!’

Page 268 - ‘If you want to get the most out of a marriage, you can’t go into it with a fifty-fifty attitude,’ Mags said. ‘If you both decide to give 100 per cent and try to outgive the other, that’s when you get a marriage that sings.’

Page 269 - ‘Grace,’ Leona added. ‘Grace is the oil that keeps the wheels running smoothly. When he leaves his underwear on the bathroom floor, forgets your birthday, snores and snaps at the kids. Those days when you can’t stop fantasising about packing up a suitcase and running off to live a life of bliss on a deserted island, where nobody leaves an empty packet of tea in the cupboard, or burps when you are trying to enjoy your meal, or expects you to know where his rugby top is. On those days, you need to remind yourself–this is a good man. He is faithful, and kind. He works hard, and means well even when he hasn’t got a clue. He is decent, and he loves me as best he can. Take a deep breath and pray for grace.’

Page 330 - We did all anyone could do in the face of unbearable loss: we kept on breathing, our hearts kept beating, our brains kept thinking and we carried on living for one more day.

This was the most powerful and poignant story I have read this year. It is very hard to categorise it, actually, but I will give it a go.

Faith is engaged to Perry, a rich guy she met whilst she was waitressing at his swanky club. She loves him, but is she IN love with him? Hmmm, that is the million dollar question of the hour, right?

What Perry doesn't seem to realise is that Faith and her brother Sam have had it tough. REALLY tough. With a mother who died too young, living with their grandmother and living on the brink of poverty for years, Faith is good at reaching deep within herself and working all the hours that she can, in order to pay her bills. Sam, on the other hand, has coped with the trauma of the past by putting as many different substances in his body as it takes, in order not to feel anymore. Faith feels obliged to help Sam as much as possible, as he was there for her when she was small. And she knows that Perry will be her guarantor so that she will never feel hungry and desperate again. She just has to get to the wedding whilst trying to avoid her future mother-in-law.

As a person who, until very recently, was also living right on the edge of poverty myself, I can relate to this on so many levels. When you are rockbottom like that, you will do pretty much anything not to be in that situation. Like Faith and Sam's mother, I have gone through DV although I am still around to tell the tale, luckily. And no substance abuse in our family either, whew!

Anyway, I SO admire Faith and her resilience. She is a wonderful sister and friend. She finds herself joining a choir and each member of the choir has been through very hard times. These women are survivors and the bonds they form are close and real. Strangely enough, I also joined a choir very similar to this, when I was at my lowest and my friends in that choir are what got me through. Our choir mistress was called Melissa and even though she was a very different person to Hester in this book, the way that Melissa coralled all of us was much the same!

This is a powerful story of friendship and sisterhood and even though there are some terrible things that happen in this book that could be triggers for some people, it is an incredible story and I am still thinking about it, several days after I have finished it.

5 stars.
